I just got another Wellwater Conspiracy 7" today. There is a song on it
called "Green Undertow" in which Matt Cameron sings vocals on. He sings
way better on this track then he did on "Sad Mcbain", I was impressed
with his vocals. Ben Shepherd sings on "Trowerchord", another track
from the 7". I scanned the sleeve and uploaded it to Seth.

I don't think he comes close. Ok, he's got a good voice, but he
doesn't have the range and power of Chris. Personally, I think Eddie
Vedder would be a better choice than Layne, because Eddie's got more of
a range, but not the power. But he's emotional as hell, you've gotta
give him that. But Chris blows 'em all away.

You know I have always wanted to hear rusty cage with a orchestral
arrangement. Have a string section play the intro, horns accompaining.
Horns playing the body of the song. Use the strings and and a upright bass
for the rhythm section, while the horns play solos. That would sound
    incredible.

I think it must depend on who you know, cause the majority of girls I know
are into rock, see em at all the festivals down here, at concerts, go to
pubs where live bands play etc etc. It is the crowd I hang around tho, casue
I know a few that are not, but by far i know more that are right into music
:) And just to add another 2cents, I perfer female singers alot more, to me
they have a greater range in vocals and can get alot more emotion into their
voice then alot of male singers I have heard, i don't know look at my cd
collection, most of the bands have a female singer :)

Spot on - technically, Chris is a far superior singer. Layne is good, maybe
great, but he doesn't have the control or range of Chris. By the same token,
Chris doesn't have to put up with too many harmonies - this wouldn't be so
much of a problem for Layne, but the singing guitarists in AIC (Jerry
Cantrell and co.) have a rotter of a time... it's hard enough to play alone!
It's hard enough to play and sing! But to play and sing harmonies is
something that I admire in any artist...

Chris's voice is just more powerful. If you listen to Layne talk, it's
hard to believe he can sing how he does.

I'd agree with that most definitely. Most people I hang around with have
relatively conservative and limited tastes and they immediately label
Soundgarden as "weird metal stuff" - most unfortunate - until I get the
listening to the whole Soundgarden collection and gradually persuade them
onto better music...

Now what I'm thinking is that we get all the non-guitarist/drummer/electric
bass players around for a very different Soundgarden jam session - we've got
a trumpet player, I play keyboard/piano... there's gotta be plenty of others
out there! - and then we record a Soundgarden tribute album with out all new
arrangements of those popular Soundgarden songs - Jesus Christ Pose,
Spoonman, Big Dumb Sex...

What do we do for drums? I reckon we get someone to play the lagerphone...
(for those who don't know what a lagerphone is, take a broom handle, stick
lots of beer bottle tops on nails on this broom handle and you've got a
lagerphone! Sounds not completely unlike a tambourine on steroids (or
alcohol maybe?!?!))

Any takers? :>

Oasis sound like the Beatles. Blur have some tracks that sound like the
Beatles. But what about the rest of the so-called britpop scene. Pulp,
Radiohead, Elastica, BlackGrape etc. They don't all sound like the
Beatles.

Seems like the fork is pretty much decided. And it does rock. But we all
have to remember that the way it looks on the web, on a nice color
monitor, all glowing and shiny and glorious is not the way it's going to
be on a cotton tee. Let's not get disappointed if it doesn't look exactly
like that. I know I won't, cuz,like I said before, it rocks.

Oh damn, I'm babbling again...

Well, I think somms@mit.edu should be on there. I also really, really
like the sg "skull" christmas ornament at the web site. So, I was thinking
maybe we could replace the teeth that spell out sg with SOMMS. SOMMS isa
nice odd numbered letttered word(?), so it work out well. then below that
we could put in @mit.edu. So, sometime down the road, if the address does
change ,we could make a new shirt with the same kick-ass SOMMS skull with
the new domain name just below it.

Would we be in danger of copyright infringement by doing that?

Anyhow, I think that the high correlation between sg lovers and people
who have varied musical tastes is a very telling statistic. I wuld
venture that this correlation is due to the fact that people who really
like different types of music enjoy each type of music for its own sake.
The resounding crescendo of a good piece of Beethoven gives us the same
excitement as a gloriously monstrous riff from Kim's guitar, or even a
from Coolio breakin' down a hype rhyme. To each his own, in its own
regard, on its own terms, in its own specific genre. But like CC says,
"Come on we like it all!" I like all types of music, even my ancestral
music of India. It really surprises me that my friends who don't have
such varied taste think that I would like music that crosses the gap
between two diferent genres of music.Even though they don't care forit,
they think that I would like a rock-rap type band, or things like that. I
find that they are palatable, but I can't get into them they I do for SG.
SG rocks in a rock frame of mind in the epitome of what expresionist rock
should be about, and I thank and congratulate them for it. Anybody else?

And I have noticed that SG fans are a very particular breed. I found that
my 10 year old brother, whose tastes lean toward uptempo, techno music,
in contrast to my own tendency toward darker, driving music, can agree on
only one thing. SG kicks ass. SG bridges the musical gap between us,
presumably because they are just really good.

Or maybe it's in the genes....

Did (Seth?) mention confusion over weather SOMMS was issued
on vinyl? Well, before I was lucky enough to get SOMMS, I
bought a JCP etched 12" with four tracks. Side One is JCP
(album version), Stray Cat Blues, Into the Void (Sealth),
and Somewhere (album version). Side Two is an etching of
the metal skeleton on a cross from the JCP video. The album
sleeve is the same skeleton (one side printed in blue and
the other in yellow). The front jacket cover is cut open in
the shape of a cross to reveal one sleeve skeleton. The
back jacket cover is solid and shows an individual photo of
each band member from the JCP video (the distorted hanging
upside down scenes). Under the photos are the lyrics to JCP
(with an error!). They typed 'carrying a LOUD' instead of

jumps, skips, bounces, and rolls across stage like a demon. Which
according to some of you he may be.
Are there any videos from the Superunknown tour?

I also think Mailman is a under appreciated song. I believe that SG fans

i think layne has a unique vocal quality, but you can't even put him in
the same league as chris. chris has power where layne does not, chris has
control and range, and well, decent song writing ability. layne, has a
unique sounding voice, kind of like it is coming out of a distortion
pedal. i think layne could do a great version of kyle petty, without
anything to distort his voice. but cantrell writes pretty much all the
good songs that chains has done, and he does a good portion of the
singing on the new album. layne isn't a very harmonic singer. chris is,
while at the same time being a powerful, grungy, dark, melancholy... okay
i'll stop, you get the picture.

Hey everyone.....

I think we have a pretty good base for what we want on the T-shirt....

1. The word "SOMMS" (not w/ mit.edu) printed somewhere on the shirt.

2. A picture of the famous "end of humanity" twisted fork.
(no copyrighted ensignias, whatsoever)
3. The phrase "Posting with our good eye closed." definitely on the back!

I think that's all we need...nothing too fancy....
Choosing the color will be a different story, but if those three items are on
the shirt, I don't give a crap WHAT color it is as long as I can see 'em!
Anyone agree with me??

Does anyone else out there think that Uncovered is just one song that just
SOUNDS so fantastic? I wish Chris would sing more like that in his deep
voice. I've been listening to Louder Than Love a lot lately (decided I
needed a break from BMF, my favourite), and really, Uncovered is a song I
think worth discussing a bit.

Apart from the great sound, it has very interesting lyrics. Does anyone
know what it was actually written about? Was it written about a particular
person, or thing? I think it could be simply talking about shame (hey Mr
Shame have you got a name). That when someone has done something so bad
(secrets are uncovered) then they feel really awful (naked and cold,
mumbling and crying) because others around them feel such disgust and hatred
for them. I'm not sure if CC wrote it with compassion for the person whose
secret was uncovered, or whether he actually is so disgusted by him he
really hates him. Or maybe it was not written about anything like this at
all - just written in such a way that it would be interpreted like that.
Often the way with Soundgarden songs - that's one of the reasons I am so
attracted to this band!

Can someone enlighten me here?

This is a Find!

I just bought a copy of Soundgarden's _Screaming Life_!!! on 12" orange
vinyl. (Vicki, I think you have an actual copy. I hope it's on orange
vinyl and Mint+!) Anyway...I cant play it! It's going under glass... It's
like touching a piece of Seattle music history. There are only 500 known
copies in existance....And one of them is in the Rock n Roll hall of Fame.
If 'you' had a copy...would you play it? I can see playing it once to see
if it's legit (plus the CD reissue was remastered...so this is vintage Jack
Endino grunge). I am curious as to what it sounded like to the caffeine and
alcohol fueled kiddies of Seattle circa '87...but I cant do it.

Also...I was told that FoBD (Live) was recorded in 1993 in Detroit? I just
picked up a copy of the australian version of FoBD and it doesnt say
anything. Is the city and venue imprinted on another version?

Lastly, I picked up the "Made in England" CD of Superunknown with the bonus
track. The inside part of the CD (The actual plastic hole) differs with the
north american one I have.. in that the north american is clear with the
name Soundgarden - Superunknown, while the UK version is red. Is that
standard for all the CD's that have "She Likes Surprises"...is the plastic
hole area red with the actual CD a black vinyl motif? just curious....

Has anyone tried to access the Official SG website recently? I just
tried and it wouldn't let me in. But there is a new front door. There
is swirling smoke on the screeen. It's very cool. I guess they're under
construction once again.

I don't have any other band news, but I must agree with Mohit that
everyone should see NOFX. Not only are they funny but they are excellent
musicians as well. They are punk, but not like punk that you see on
MTV. They play an excellent live show, I swear.

I have picked up a few old vinyl things from bands I love mostly Def FX
stuff, and it is a hard choice not to play it, you really really want to
hear it off the vinyl, but something holds you back :)

I have only got the Australian version and it doesn't say anything at all
about the songs, usally they something of where they are recorded etc.

Have you noticed that the liner notes are different to? The pictures/colours
and pages are different. Well I know it is different from the Australian
version. The Aust. version has a red middle ....you sure you don't have the
Aust. version cause I have seen a UK version and it had an orange middle. A
friend was living in England and bought it over there. Maybe there a two
english versions or something.

That shirt thing once more :)

A lot of ppl don't want @mit.edu and alot do, I don't mind either way, but
what about "SOMMS LIST" keeps it as the list and it doesn't matter if the
address changes?? any takers?

I agree totally with you, if it gets to fancy it will be to hard to produce
and cost a bit more. I personally would put the SOMMS on the back, leave the
front with just the fork.

my suggestions and I agree with the overall idea here :)

Yeah, what is that swirly stuff?

It does seem that menu.html is missing, so we can venture no further
into the Official SG site until they fix it. However, I don't know how
much of it has changed since a few days ago. Most of the files that
used to be there are still there (band.html, fanclub.html, tour.html,
albums.html, new.html (I think these were the 5 that were linked from
the old index.html)). Some of the new files, like band-faq.html, which
just appeared recently, are also still there. Of course, none of this
means anything, because it's just as likely that they won't use any of
these files. My guess is that the old index will be renamed to
menu.html, accessible via the new swirly front door.

On a side note, the link to the site from Rocktropolis now uses
imusic.com instead of rocktropolis.com, so I guess it will only be in
one place from now on. Not that _finding_ the link from Rocktropolis
was easy...
