It is a dinky song (guitar riff-wise) compaired to other Soundgarden
songs. Kim rules, and so does Chris, but Chris doesn't rule as much at
the guitar, so if Kim wants him to play the dinky part, let him play
the dinky part. :)

BT>If I can be slightly elitist for a moment,
BT>I would say that the soundgarden fan is a step above your average rock fan.
BT>It takes an appreciation of something special to really enjoy soundgarden.
BT>There are many people who can hear a few songs on the radio, say "cool."
BT>and buy the album, but it's a special breed who enjoys looking deeper into
BT>the music and lyrics and would bother subscribing to a list serv just for
BT>that purpose. Soundgarden is well-known because great music is always
BT>going to be noticed. They are not, however, the most popular band around
BT>_because_ of that special appreciation that not everyone has.
BT>I'm also a pink floyd fan, and this discussion has come up on Echoes (the
BT>pf listserv) about pink floyd. I would venture that the same reason
BT>applies.

This is so true. You deserve to be an elitest. Also, bands like
Soundgarden don't conform to what's "cool" at that time, which makes
them even harder for those non-diehard fans to like all the time, which
is why we have to endure fad after fad of bands like Green Day and
Hootie. Willie Nelson is like that too (like SG, I mean, not Green
Day). I realized this when I bought the Twisted Willie CD. It rules.
Buy it now. It's a bit countryish, even the song Kim is on, but it
still rules. Jerry Cantrell does an excellent song, also.

BT>There's also consideration to be made for variety of musical taste: look at
BT>Seth or Urb@no and I'm sure many others who have widely varied tastes.
BT>So, you can give yourself a smug little pat on the back for being such a
BT>cool person as to appreciate Soundgarden.

I think, the broader range of music you listen to, the more you will
appreciate all music. And then if you play music, you will appreciate
it even more. One day you might catch me playing jazz on my trumpet,
the next I might be jamming Soundgarden on my guitar. And all while
I'm listening to SG, Miles Davis, or even BB King.

It's a thing we trumpet players call "intestinal fortitude" in mixed
company. But what we really mean is "balls." Most girls suck on a
trumpet, as do some guys, but I have seen a few good female trumpet
players. I guess it's the same way with singers. Chris must have the
biggest balls of all, then. And I didn't mean to sound sexist in any
way, it's just some observations that have been made.

For some reason I don't like too many bands that have girl singers. I
think it just seems this way because there are so many more bands with
male singers. I like a certain number of male singers, but I probably
like the same amount of female singers, proportionally. I dunno, I
must be on crack.

RK>(over here, at least)?? Lars ALWAYS wins, and although I think
RK>Metallica are a great band, Matt is a way better drummer than Lars
RK>is. In my opinion........

Because it all goes back to that 'what's cool' thing you were talking
about before. It's also why Flea always wins best bassist over Les
Claypool...and I've never even seen Ben on that list. People don't
look at the actual talent, they just look for who's popular at the
time, and maybe pretty good. The guy from Prong said it best. "95% of
musicians think that just because they've got talent they'll make it."
While I'm on the subject of Prong, Tommy Victor once said, "...we knew
that Soundgarden was the next big thing. But at that point, six years
ago (it was 1987 that he's talking about, when SG was playing for the
guys at SST), the Sub Pop thing was already boring. It took 7-8 more
years for it to be solidified by the rest of America."

How about "Damn right I'm argumentative." - Kim Thayil
sorta captures the list's spirit.
Or work "Emailman" in there somewhere ('course that's kinda gender-specific)
But, actually I sorta like the "PW/MGEC." (Very clever Tonerkins!)
My favorite design so far is the one with the fork, "Posting With My Good
Eye Closed." It's simple and has a fork.
But I also like the idea of having "SOMMS@MIT.EDU" on there. I also like
the picture of the pyramid (=E0 la dollar bill) and the "somms" spelled out
in orange peels. Oh yeah, and I like the idea of having the BMF sparks on
there.
I think we should have very few _direct_ references to SG on there. That
way, we don't run into copyright problems and it attracts cooler people.
Think, if you're walking around with your shirt on and someone recognizes a
Soundgarden _reference_ and not an actual name or title of a song, then you
know you've met another SG fanatic.
I'll buy one no matter what, though.

Why does this t-shirt have to last forever? Life is by nature ephemeral,

Hey, how about this?
All this talk about shirt color made me think, We'll never get everyone to
agree on one color. Can we have people _Send_ their choice of t-shirt to
where the shirts are printed or to some list rep? Then, apart from the
actual design, it's a freedom of choice thing. Plus, people will still be
identifiable by the design on the shirt. Finally, it will add some
assurance that people will stick with it because they'll have a shirt
invested in it.

Random stuff I thought of while catching up on ten days of the list:
What Chris actually said about his fork was, "The end of humanity and all
of mankind as we know it." I got that from the SPINOnline transcript. I
just wanted to point that out before we put something else on a t-shirt.

I think "Charcoal or ash" would be a good color for the t-shirt.
Okay, don't get me wrong here, but I don't really want the word "satan" on

like the simplicity of SOMMS. Plus, the thing I said about actual song

By the way, I really do want this t-shirt. Who better to design a

I'm willing to help as much as I can to get these things made.

Yes! Douglas Adams reference. Cheese _is_ good.

something about a knife somewhere. I'm too lazy to think of something right

Subject: Guess (t-shirt)

I did a little design on dummy shirts and sent them to seth.
They're just compilations of other designs.
On the front pocket is the spark that is on the web page. I used this
because it's sort of an unofficial SG symbol even though it's from a
specific album (sort of like the Grateful Dead's Steal Your Face). Also,
sort of tacked on is a poor imitation I did of Chris's skull. I couldn't
get a copy of the cursor icon from the CD+. If anyone else can or can do a
better version, by all means, go ahead.
I also thought about the color. Natural is definitely the way to go,
because otherwise, the stuff (mostly the fork) just isn't going to show up.
Though I still support the sending your own shirt idea.

On the back of the shirt is the "Posting w/MGEC" superimposed on the fork,
and at the bottom is the black letter tape "SOMMS@MIT.EDU," also from the
web page.

If we don't want the word Soundgarden on the front (even very small), we
could take that off and superimpose the skull on the spark, leave the spark
by itself, or put the spark with some other word.
Anyway, I want the shirt to be good, but I think we should get it going
while we're still excited about it.
Dammit I should be doing homework or sleeping or something.

Subject: MATT CAMERON IS AWESOME!!!!!!!

I have to agree with the guys talking about Matt Cameron on the last
digest...he is one of the best drummers around. One quick question to one
of the guys who wrote that though...you said that "he couldn't have gotten
that high end crack with just his ride cymbal and some good mixing"...I
found this puzzling. Did you mean that what he does is not possible, becuz
I know it is. I drum along with SG stuff all the time and you can get that
sound from hitting the upper shaft of the stick on the ride cymbal's bell,
or any cymbal's bell for that matter. I am always in awe when I listen to
his work...I think the thing about his drumming that distinguishes him from
a lot of drummers out there (and which also creates a certain SG sound) is
his unbelievable sense of time. He can hang in a pocket with the best...his
grooves are right on all the time. I think this is in large part due to his
love for jazz drumming. I read about his love for jazz somewhere and I
wasn't surprised...that really helps you build your sense of time and helps
you to learn how to listen to other members in the band and lock in with
their groove. Anyways, I don't want to talk this to death. Some of my
other favorite drummers are Jimmy Chamberlain, Neil Peart, Mike Portnoy, Max
Roach, Buddy Rich, Simon Phillips, Charlie Benante, and Dave Weckl. There
are many more that I listen to that I probably forgot, but I don't want to
bore any of the non-drummers on this list anyways...if there are any
drummers out there, e-mail me...it'd be cool to talk.

Subject: Re: Soundgarden Digest, Wednesday, 28 Feb 1996

Hey All,

I'm new to the list, so I'm hoping that this is the address to send
this to. I just have a few comments about some of the topics brought
up on the Wednesday Digest (Feb 28).

On the subject of the shirt...what are the chances of actually
getting a pocket on it? It would be a handy place to put the SOMMS
logo, plus it could double as a cigarette pack holder. Just a
thought from a smoking SG fan.

About the SG CD+... just a warning, the Creative Labs 6X kit, with
the 6X CD drive and the AWE 32 soundcard WILL NOT read the CD+
format. I spent 15 on the phone with Corel (the makers of the
drivers for it), and found that n creative labs drives recognize the
format. They cannot be upgraded to read it either. Unfortunately,
the whole reason I paid $400 to upgrade my 2X CD was so I could run
the SG CD+. Rats, screwed again. :(

Just a little spew about myself... I'm not a musician, though I often
wish I could play some kind of instrument. Just wanted to tell you
what I look for in music (like you guys care). I try not to limit
myself to a particualr genre of music, i.e., Grunge, Heavy Metal,
etc. If a band has good, hard driving guitars, a melodic singer who
can wail when required to, and interesting drum beats, I'll buy it.
Since I just got on this list and have no idea what bands you guys
have ripped or glorified, let me throw out a couple for you... Tool,
Sven Gali, Gruntruck, and this months fave... My Sister's Machine.
If you haven't heard of MSM, you really, really need to pick up a
copy of Wallflower. I guarantee you WILL NOT be disappointed. Of
course, there's always the old stand-bys AIC, PJ (though not
Vitology), MLB, and a few others associated with the Seattle scene
i.e., Queensryche. Am I off-base, placing them in the same category
as Soundgarden? IMHO, the only person who can come close to touching
Cris in the singing dept. is Layne Staley. {Shrug} Am I out of line
here? Let me know.

Well, that's about....hmmm....$2.49 worth. Feel free to flame or
agree. :) Oh yeah, put me down for 2 shirts.

I just might have to arrange a Soundgarden song for trumpet. Toybox
suggested I figure out the Like Suicide solo on my trumpet. And
orchestral arrangement for Rusty Cage would rule, but so would hearing
Johnny Cash do it.

I guess I'd be interested in a shirt...though I won't offer any ideas as
I am limited artistically.
Any info would be appreciated.

I believe you, but isn't the song "Badmotorscooter" by Montrose thrown
in there? That's what it says in the SG biography. I remember I heard
that song on the radio coming home from school on the bus one day and
almost shit my pants. I'm like, "Whoa, Badmotorfinger,

definitely gray, but not light gray.
I like the twisted fork, but what does that have to do with

How about a big roll of duct tape on the front :) (black of course)

All the Leslie cabinets I've ever seen have the speakers rotating about the
z-axis (ie. with their centre line of rotation being vertical).

I agree with John Jacob that the very least we could do would

Subject: Another one for the FAQ

Is there an FAQ? I haven't heard about one. We should make one. Even
the name of the list is obscure enough to warrant explanation via FAQ.
SOMMS, for the guy who asked, and everybody who doesn't know stands for
satanoscillatemymetallicsonatas. Try to say that backwards!! Actually
it's a palindrome, which of course means it says/spells the same thing
backwards. Somms is the title of an e.p. which was included in a special
double package with the album badmotorfinger. There are only 100 000 of
these limited edition discs. Some were reportedly printed on vinyl,
making them extra rare. A copy of somms has been known to go for
$80-$100, and it is considered to be a good deal for under $25.
BMF/SOMMS includes a disc with the album badmtorfinger, and somms, which
contains 5 songs:	Into the Void(Sealth)
			Girl U Want
			Stray Cat Blues
			She's a Politician
			Slaves and Bulldozers (live)
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

good call ben. little joe and I were only speaking about that
yesterday afternoon. we can't see anything bad about having
somms@mit.edu, or at least anything that would make plain old somms
preferable. there could be a certain vintage factor in having the entire
address on the back of the shirt. it would probably look cooler, and
maybe not so generic (as far as fan-designed tshirts can be generic). in
the very least, it may eventually turn out to be way cooler than any
other somms list shirts that might come out in the future. is there a
problem (copyright) with putting mit.edu on there seth, something that
would be a ripoff of your alma mater?

Sorry, this is sort of unrelated.
I've been noticing lately that a lot of people on this list (myself
included) seem to like Liz Phair.
Does this seem unusual to anyone else?
I mean, SG is considered "metal" (if I have to put a label on it) and
Liz ...isn't.
Why does the music of Liz Phair appeal to Soundgarden fans???
Kelly
by the way, I -would- rather see Joan Osborne or Alanis
Morissette win a Grammy over Liz. Do you think we will hear from Alanis
Morissette in 10 years? Maybe on "The Big 90's" on VH1!

Fancy only getting the chance to celebrate your birthday every four years.
At least you stay young.............

And just to get the subject back on Soundgarden, what EP, b-side, single,
soundtrack?, (whatever) does Flutter Girl appear on? That is one helluva
great song, and thanks to Jamesetta I've now got a demo version of it on

It is definately one of my favorite songs by soundgarden (It is my

find out different, tell me too.
