Subject: Not to start a war.....just an interesting discuss

CA>I take your point. But here are a few questions to ponder:
CA>1. Why is MTV the bad guy? I'm not coming to MTV's defence, as such - I
CA>don't get MTV here so I know not what I'm talking about, perhaps - but isn't
CA>it the band itself or the band's producers that decide what song is going to
CA>be released as a single?

First of all, I don't think the band (opps, I read wrong...you said
producers...I still think it's the higher up guys) has much say in
which song gets picked for a single. It's probably the head honcho
guys who know nothing about music. Maybe the bands help a little (when
they're well established, especially) but in general, it's probably the
top guys that pick this.
Then, these head honcho type guys have to pick the song that they think
will make it big, on MTV and the radio. So this is where MTV comes in.

CA>2. Why are singles produced anyway? To make money, money, money!!
CA>MTV? I'd say rather for the band - MTV is surely just a spin-off).

Yeah, but if the band is making money off the single, MTV is making
money off it too, because people will be watching it for that single.

CA>3. Why are singles produced with other songs on the CD that cannot be
CA>on the album? Are they really directed at "MTV-driven-idiots" or are they
CA>to get suckers like me (fans of the band who already have the album) to buy
CA>the single AS WELL as the album, just for the extra songs? C'mon, I know
CA>there are lots of people on this list who have bought Soundgarden singles
CA>just for the previously unreleased b-sides that go with them........

I think that would have to be a little of both. It's that two birds
with one stone thing.

CA>4. Is the idea of a single really all bad? Generally (except in Ross's
CA>case!) singles are cheaper than the whole album. I often don't have the
CA>money to BUY the whole album. So a single/EP can be a good way to get
CA>hands (ears) on something musical to keep me going until I can afford the
CA>album. They can also be good for sampling a new band - just buy an EP so
CA>you're not wasting your money on the album if in fact after a few listens
CA>you decide you don't like the music much. Don't forget music is more
CA>expensive to buy in Australia than the US & Canada! (And probably more
CA>expensive in Mexico too, right Urbano??).

Ok, but I've found that the two or three songs aren't all that great
compaired to the stuff on the real album (in most cases)...and that's
why they're b-sides. They weren't good enough to put on the album, but
they'll get those non-MTV suckers (the real fans) to buy it for the
extra songs.

CA>>I applaud those who own BOTH the album and the single.
CA>Thank you! :-) [I'm taking a bow now].

Even though I sometimes want to shoot myself after I spend $12 on a CD
single for two or three songs that I didn't have, I buy Sundgarden's
anyway. And They Might Be Giants, but that's another list.

As far as liking SG's older stuff better, cool, good for you but personally
I'm happy with the changes they've made. I wouldn't want them to keep
repeating "FOPP" or even "Hands All Over" (which I do love). I own one AC/DC
record and will never need to but another one because I know it will sound
very similar to the one I own. It's great for when you're in a party mood,
but that's it!! SG is alot more diverse and will continue to change, whether
we like it or not! In an interview in Circus magazine (right before
"Superunknown" came out, CC said that they would never do anything
intentionally to get people to like them....but they may do something to make
people hate them!! And in an off note, but an important one to those of us on
this list, if this bill goes through Congress and the internet is restricted
from "questionable" material (who will decide what that is anyway??) what
will happen if one of us does post something questionable or possibly vulgar?
Will we be fined personally?? Seth?? Sorry Seth, I know you didn't want alot
of posts on this non SG related subject but that is a concern for everyone on
the list to think about when writing to the list and other places.

Wrong Seth, this is just where it should be discussed.. These are the people
who are going to be effected by this "Law". I'm glad Ross ask the question,
how many of the 300+ out on this list wanted to know but were afraid to ask.
Your response gave them more information to consider and helped them in
understanding the issues.. Give the people on this list the credit for being
more than just music fans. This is an issues of importance don't become like
the people you are protesting against - not to permit the flow of information
that educates and informs is a worst type of "Censorship".

And to the members of this list: This is not a game, this is your future and
you children's future. If you close your eyes and make light of it, don't come
back in a few years and say - I didn't see. It was you who closed their eyes..

If you are determine to keep this list only Soundgarden, fine, how's this. Do
you think the members of Soundgarden want this type of censorship? Maybe we
should have Vikki call Silver Management and ask the bands take on it..

That's ok, 'cause I don't think PJ sold out either. They changed just
like Soundgarden did. Except, I think theirmusic got a bit less radio

Black Circle or Whipping. But then again, Vitology has more of those
radio friendly slow songs. That's ok, because they're beautiful.
Black, Release, Immortality, Elderly Woman..., Nothingman, and Garden

And to add to all that seth said:
As a computer programming major, I have seen the telephone industry
take the next step in controling the net with this bill. Today's existing
phone lines are too slow to handle what the internet is becoming and heading
towards. Phone line today will only handle up to a certain amount of data
transmission, compressed or not.
Allowing telephone companies to handle net activity will soon be
obsolite, unless the phone companies wish to lay all new fiberoptic cable
across the whole country, it will never get any better. Today's phone
lines barely handle video conferencing, and even that is choppy. This
bill made it closer for telephone companies to control the progress of
the net (at least it isn't getting closer to cable companies who had the
worst(!) ideas, but that's a different story). The other options we have
as an internet society are much more appealing than this. Without going
into it, the former head of Arpa-net has laid out a very detailed cost
effective alternative that will be able to handle all internet needs for
at least another 50 years. Phone companies (with the way the net is
headed) will be obsolete in at max 2. I won't even get into censership.

a large cover? I didn't buy it cos I'd already spent 30 quid on CDs -
was just wondering.

translation for our american cousins quid = pounds :)

I have neither the time or the desire to worry about this issue with you over
Silver Management.. But since you have proclaimed yourself know all of it. I
will not encourage anyone on this list to try to reach, ask, or use the
management of Soundgarden in any way. You and your zine can have all that
glory..

To the list members I apologize for this intrusion. The intent of the original
note was to provoke discussion among the members on the issues and if they
though SG would be pro or con to it. I will not bother you again.. End of
subject.

An excellent point. Thank you, Jamie. This debate is definitely
important, and I can't think of a good reason why we shouldn't discuss
it here, since you're right in that it affects all of us as members of
an Internet-wide mailing list.

My apologies.

It would be interesting, but it really is unlikely that Soundgarden
would be much concerned with the part of the Telecomm bill that
affects us. But if Vikki wants to call and ask, that would be cool
(and Deb, we're not all running to our phones to bug Silver
Management; they can probably handle a phone call or two)...

Well, two things. In 1992, Soundgarden was on the mainstage and were
never on the second stage(well, there was that three song acoustic set
with Eddie V that I saw on the stage but that didn't count.) When
Lolla 92 came to Alpine Valley, Sharkbait and Jim Rose and some other
band (i think they were rappers) was on it.

Also, Soundgarden won't be the first band to do it twice. Cypress
Hill was on the second stage in 93 or 94 and then were on the

This is Deb from MPS. My coeditor answered the message about calling
SM and finding out Sgarden's stand on the topic of censorship/ the
net/etc. It was not meant to be taken in such a vein as to enflame the
whole list. Ladies and gentlemen, stop and think for a moment...

Silver Management has bands to promote, tours to set up, new bands to
get contracts for, fan club mailings to plan and prepare for mailing,
record companies to deal with, etc., etc, and on and on. We on this
list, and all other Sg fans have no need to call them on every little
whim that crosses our minds. We have dealt with alot of managements
and can assure you that SM is the most open one around, or so it seems.
If there's something the band or management wants fans to know, it gets
out there to the public! Unlike another management in Seattle that has
never told the fans why a member of that band was fired, or told all
the fans a story about it.

We only call when we have business for the zine, and they do appreciate
that. If you feel you must contact them and find out what's up, why
not try their email address? In the end, you can do what you want, but
put yourself in the position of SM's staff who's trying to do a
job....and doesn't have the band right at hand to answer questions
posed by fans!

Thanks for listening and apologies to anyone whose toes were stepped on
by simple advice.

OK guys. I now understand the reasons for the black page. I'm a telecom
major and have spent a lot of time discussing the bill in class, but no
one ever brought up the point that speech was going to be censored.
Neither did any of the newspaper articles or television reports that I
saw. I was under the impression that the main focus of the bill had almost
nothing to do with the internet. I thought it just concerned the
legalities of the telephone and cable industries. It appears that I was
not well informed about the far reaches of the bill, and I apologize for
my earlier post (the one with the list). Gosh. None of my professors
approached this bill from the slant that some of you have. They only
taught us the "good" thing(s) about it but didn't dare mention that it
was a 1st ammendment violation. But now I see that it sucks (thanx Seth)
and I see that the rest of us need to do something about it. Sorry to
post this not-too-SG-related message, and I say 'thank you' to whoever read
this.

Ross

P.S.--Speech censorship? How can that *possibly* be done (I mean
effectively)? And to keep it SG related, what can Silver Management do
about it?

SG are the ONLY band to appear on the Lolla main stage
twice. Hmmm...Atypical, as usual (hey! an oxymoron).
The Lolla tour will provide publicity and revenue, but, more
importantly, enable them to remain 'uncelebrated'. In a
couple of recent interviews, Chris (trying not to sound
unappreciative) emphasized that he misses the challenge of
gaining a sometimes unwilling audience's respect and
attention. (I'll venture that the sing-along that occurs
during BHS really freaks them out.) Chris also mentioned
that, in retrospect, their set lists should have come from
what THEY WANTED to play, versus what they thought WE WANTED
     to hear.
