i called sub pop today about the goofed up 'heart and lungs' ep i bought
over the weekend, and spoke to someone at headquarters. boy, she was
amused. i asked her if she knew of any of these messed up cd's and she
didn't. (i trusted her judgement, for whatever reason i bet she'd know.)
i told her how i played it and there was this RAP on it, and that, of
course, rap sucks. so she said, 'yeah that's rough. not only was it the
WRONG music, but it was SHITTY music!' because it was an import, there's
not a lot they can do, and i didn't expect them to do anything, but i
thought i would pass it on, as i think this must be the only goofed up
one in the universe. i know this is no big deal, but i am still amused by

I've been a soundgarden fan for many years now. I first started
listening to them after my brother saw them play at a local club back in
the late eighties. At the show he bought a vinyl copy of Ultramega OK
and I quickly took to it and kept it as my own. I have been a devoted
fan ever since. I waited patiently for each album to come out and was
delighted with their contents up untill SUPERUNKNOWN. Am I the Only one
that thinks this is a weak album? Badmotorfinger just blew me away, but
I can't find anything on Superunknown that tops anything on Badmotorfinger.
The only thing that comes close is Mailman.

To me, two of the songs that could be called definitive Soundgarden songs
are Searching With My Good Eye Closed and Hands All Over. Those songs
are filled with swirling guitars and gut-wrenching vocals. Most of their
material up untill Superunknown had a nice "rough" feel to it.
Superunknown was too slick and polished. About the only material I liked
post-badmotorfinger has been the b-sides. But, to be completely fair, I
do like the demo version of Fell On Black Days.

I can't believe that Black Hole Sun was released as a single. This song
is such crap. Everytime I hear it I get visions of thousands of Mtv
programmed teens waving their hands in the air.

I think Superunknown was a direct effort to increase their popularity
exponentialy. They had come off an incredibly successful tour for their
best selling and most popular album yet and set out to capitalize on it.
I don't know how much of it is the bands fault compared to the record
company/management but I'm sure they both have blood on their hands.

I know this rant is kind of disjointed but it was something I have wanted
to say for a long time. To condense this whole post into one line, I'd
have to say that I like the old style of music better.

Kim, Chris, Ben, Matt. Don't let me down with this new album. I've been
around for awhile and I'll suffer through poor material even for one
great song. So drop trying to increase your popularity (i.e CD+ pieces
of shit) and learn to rock again.

It's definitely Chris's part that's played during the solo, and there's no
other instrument being played at all, except at the start where the guitar
plays the bass part over the intro.. So I assume it's Chris on his own

I was just sitting here listening to Cold Bitch, when what do I see? A
post about it (I just read one a while back about it...that's why it's

drums. They just majorly kick ass through the whole song. I usually
hear the song as a whole, or I listen to Chris' voice, but WOW! The
drums kick ass.
Now Exit Stonehenge is on. At about 54 second into this (when he says,
"exit Stonehenge..."), there is a REALLY cool sound coming out of the
guitar. In fact, this whole song is just a bunch of cool guitar licks.
I think it sounds like someone had an idea (Chris, since it says
Chris/Soundgarden in the credits) and they just started fucking off
with it and someone hit record. I'm sure he (I think Chris) says
"Matt" at the end, maybe giving him suggestions about the song. maybe
well see a song called Exit Stonehenge in a later album (maybe with
more/better lyrics...but I think the ones it has are funny as hell!).

I wouldn't say weak, but I know exactly what you mean. I just don't get
the same feeling from superunknown as i did from the others, (esp. BMF
and LTL). When I listen to those, I'm thinking "god, this is the best
music is the world! WOO HOO, blah blah". But superunknown is, like you
said, more polished, more experimental, and on some songs, more commercial.
Not that it's bad or even just average, but I just don't listen to it. I
wouldn't come out and say that I don't like it, ( I love Mailman!!) but
when I go to put in a cd, I just never feel like listening to it.>

I don't think so. I don't think sg is like that. Otherwise they would
have hit their peak right about the same time that all the other seattle
bands did. I think its the opposite. Any band who keeps their music the same
(even if it rules) over such a long time span as sg have been around is
the real sellout. People change constantly, and get more mature, and
their musical tastes change. I know I don't like the same music I did 6
or 7 years ago.I wouldn't expect sg to keep the sound they had back on
Louder than Love (even though I wish they would) because they are
probably completely different people. I think they do what they want,
when they want and that's why it took them a little longer, but that's
also why they are one of the VERY few bands out of that area that are
really good. The stuff on superunknown is, (imho), exactly what they
wanted to do. One difference is, I think, that there was a little more of
a collective effort going into this one. I heard somewhere on an
interview that each one of them just picked a few things for the album
and there was not really any discussion between them about any of the
choices. So they all probably don't love every thing on the album, but
there is a little of each member.

A couple of months ago, someone posted a message about how they saw Kim
at a local convenience store. The clerk was giving him a hard time about
how SG was getting soft, and Kim replied with something along the lines
of "You can't be 22 and drunk forever; you've got to move on." I think
the same thing applies here. SG isn't going mainstream; they just wrote a
couple of commercial songs ("BHS" and "FOBD") to draw more people into
listening to their *definitive* material. I thought _Superunknown_ was a
great album. I, for one, have never seen a video for "4th of July" on
MTV. How about "Fresh Tendrils?" Don't you think this song represents the
soul of SG? It's musical, it's diverse and it hits you like a ton of
steel. I'll admit that I do like _BMF_ better, but I think _Superunknown_
was very legitimate effort. Maybe *I'm* the only one.....

I have to disagree. I don't believe Superunknown was, as you say, "a weak
album". I think it's amazing, and I've been a fan since Louder Than Love.
Arrangement wise, for example, I feel Superunknown is superior to Badmotorfinger
(note that I don't feel that makes the songs any better, or any worse..). I
also feel that lyrically, Superunknown is superior... great lyrics on
Badmotorfinger, but I think Superunknown tops 'em.

Besides, the music on Superunknown is not tailor-made, "we wanna be famous"
music. It's not accessible... people, as a whole, still don't like the band
that much.

As for "Black Hole Sun"... despite the fact that this "MTV song" could have been
the song to make "faithful" fans scream "sellout", have you noticed that "MTV
teens" now hate that song because it was overplayed? Yet they still love
everything else...

Ah, well. I'm not going to change any minds, I suppose.

Take care,

Hmmmm. I find it incredible that the Lump single (did it have apart from

What does the average CD cost in America? In Australia it's $30 (or $23

Superunknown's lyrics are consistantly great. Superunknown is ALWAYS

I think you're right, Carolyn. The album price was indeed a sale price. I
just thought the whole scenario was funny. I mean, why pay more for *just*
the single than for the entire album? Unless, of course, "Carolyn's
Bootie" is worth spending $12.00 (which it may very well be--I haven't
heard it). As for MTV, I've managed to see the video for "Lump" *every*
time I've flipped to MTV. "Lump" is the commercial sales pitch of the
whole album; the "MTV-driven idiots" are going to be interested only in the
single. Perhaps that's why the record store priced the single higher.
People intent on buying only the single might neglect to compare prices,
hence a profit for the store. NOW LOOK! In NO way am I trying to say that
those who bought the single are "MTV-driven idiots." In fact, that's the
LAST thing I want to say. My point is that singles in general are
designed to sell a commercial song to those who want only the song
itself, not the rest of the album. And we know that commercial + MTV =
single, so what I'm saying is those people who only wanted "Lump" would
be more inclined to buy the single than they would the entire album. And
the reason for wanting *only* "Lump" is because of its ultra-heavy
rotation on MTV. The presumption is that the single contains fewer tracks,
so it must be priced less. Right? The record store is making a killing off
those who buy the single *only* because it's commercial.

			       --BUT--

I applaud those who own BOTH the album and the single. The material on
the album is great, so I assume that "Carolyn's Bootie" must be great,
too. I think I'll buy it soon. Let's make an analogy: buying *only* the
"Lump" single and calling yourself a true POTUSA fan is just like buying
only the "Black Hole Sun" single and calling yourself a true SG fan.
Sorry to be so long-winded. What I'm trying to say is that MTV makes some
people reach for the first single they see rather than checking out the
album as well.

Actually, Nothingman, it's not Weiland.... I can't remember the guy's =

Honestly, I never saw myself writing to the Digest--I usually just
read it--but I had to let you guys know how cool most of you honestly
sound. I decided to get drunk enough to get the courage to write
this, and although it doesn't seem too SG related, I wouldn't have
subscribed unless I loved 'em, 'eh?

By the way, does anyone else f---in' love the CD+ like all hell??

I heard and saw some of that song the other day on Mtv but I had to turn
it because I was starting to feel ill, it was too fucking stupid to
listen to. Sorry. Jeez, I guess I got up on the wrong side of the bed
this morning. Maybe it was waking up at 3am to see a little puppy
looking up at me after he made some nice messes on my bedroom floor. Adios.

what about Fair Dinkkum, Aussie slang for "definitely" (or something like
that)
Carolyn taught me that one, she's so nice. However for all I know it
could be an out-dated term likened to "groovy" or "tubular".

Hey fellow Minnesota State University System student! I'm down here
in Winona at Winona State and I was checking out the mail and I happened to
see Moorhead and Minnesota on the screen. Cool. My best friend goes to C
oops, Concordia up there and is the drummer for the jazz band and a percussion-
ist for the orchestra. He's living with me in Winona this summer and we're
gonna rock all summer. I play very Thayil-esque guitar. If you ever get over
to the Cobber campus, look up Andy Kieley. He's got this long kinky, curly
blond hair that he can make into a totally huge afro. He always wears this
shirt that just says "Dick". Anyway, you wanted biographical stuff? I'm
a junior in communication studies here at WSU and I play the shit out of my
guitar everyday. I rollerblade and play hoop a lot. I also drink heavily
whenever I can. I'm from a suburb of Minneapolis, Champlin, but I'm living
in Winona until I'm done with school in a year or so. Gotta go now!

SORRY again, for not being up-to-date. Nothingman, you talk for Jason
Everman as if he is a sucker. In my opinion, he has played in one of
the best psychedelic-grunge-metal albums, ever: dropped by mindfunk.
Has anybody heard it? I believe, it is almost as good as
badmotorfinger.

wow. you are almost the same age as me then. i feel so young,
everybody on the list is like 24 or something. okay, i will go, I'm
assuming you were honest about that [who would lie? about Michael
Jackson? no.]

Just to clarify a point, did he only play in the band or did he actually write
music or contribute in any way. If you mean that he was actually a part of the
cr4eative process which produced a good album, then fine, too bad he sucked
when he played with Soundgarden, but if he only played in another good band in
his overlong career, then my response is "so what". I can't claim to know the
guy, but my impression of him from accounts I have heard is not a particularly
good one.

Hope I made myself clear,

Matt

Ok, I have a question that's been bugging me for a while now. Why is SG
doing Lolla -again-?! It's weird because no other band has done Lolla
twice.
Anyone have any theories on this?
