Chris is singing ( I did this in 16bit backwards)

"Santa is my king, I help him on Christmas Eve, I love you Santa Baby"

That's all I could really decipher, he repeats that acouple of times and
says some other stuff that I can't understand.

Yeah, its silver to match the color of the ducts.

I think soundgarden can be a bit depressive and morose, yeah.. but the music
is just so f***ing good, you can be happy when you listen too it..

Try letting your friend listen to Black Grape or something like that, that's
just very jolly and good music..

I completely agree. When they say black duct tape, I am picturing black
electrical tape. There could be black duct tape I suppose. Although
typically I guess it would be silver to deflect energy (in ducts of
course) In any case I want a Black-electrical/duct tape w3allet.

If you're refering to BTW, I don't see how anyone could come away

Of course, he does sing at the end too - but then you couldn't miss

was also a bunch of other colors like red, blue, green, you get the

Today, I feel like I'm tight rope walking with 2 tonne shoes. Anybody else
feel like that? I just can't seem to get a move on anything. My car stereo
is damaged and I can't listen to any SG tapes.

I just thought you might want to know that I saw SG live in Montreal at a
small venue. It was after their release of BMF. Excellent show! Great
acoustics!! Nice and pesonal like. Anybody out there see it? I also had
the opportunity to meet all of the band except for Chris. He was the only
one that would not come out of the tour bus (bummer). Kim wasn't very
friendly, Matt and Ben are decent, down to earth guy's. I almost didn't
recognize Matt. He was wearing a hat on backwards and I must say,
looks good with his hair off his face.

I thought that the "low as I can get" part was Chris on his own. Incidentally,
I can't tell which of the other two people singing on that track is Mark Arm
and which is Layne Stayley, I tend to think that it's Arm fitst and then
Stayley after Chris (if memory serves).. But then I'm probably wrong :)

Yes, that was Eddie Vedder who joined the Fastbacks last week on stage
at the post premier party for Hype, the very cool film documenting the
Northwest rock scene with live performances by Pearl Jam, Mudhoney,
the Melvins, Nirvana, Love Battery, Seven Year Bitch, Seaweed,
Soundgarden, and the Posies. Vedder sang "Leaving Home," the classic
Holland/Dozier/Holland (for those who don't know, those were the guys
who penned hit after hit for Motown in the '60s) chestnut "Leavin'
Here." A live version of that very same song appears on the
soon-to-be-released Home Alive compilation album.

Vedder certainly does live a charmed life. Two weeks ago he went
surfing, and last week, while in Park City, Utah to attend the premier
of Hype, it was snow boarding. Vedder was joined at the Hype shindig
by Chris Cornell of Soundgarden and his effervescent and successful
wife/manager Susan Silver, who made an appearance at both the premier
and the party which featured live music by the aforementioned
Fastbacks. Said party was hosted by Sub Pop Records will put out the
Hype soundtrack this Spring.

The connection Vedder and Cornell have to Hype, besides the obvious,
is that the film was co-produced by Lisa Dutton, who is the owner of
Moe's Mo' Roc' N Cafe--the very in-crowd Seattle night club where
anyone who's anyone goes to see and be seen. Moe's is also the
permanent home of "Jim Rose's Sideshow Museum." Dutton and
photo/gallery owner "Spike" drove what they called the "Hypemobile" to
Park City, Utah for the festivities. What the Hypemobile really is, is
a gutted mobile home filled with Seattle paraphernalia. Dutton is a
well-documented pack rat. For instance Courtney Love's push-up bra is
encased in plastic for posterity as is one of Chris Cornell's curly
locks as well as some unmentionables from Mother Love Bone, the first
band that Pearl Jam manager Kelly Curtis ever handled.

As for the Fastbacks, after Sundance, they go into the studio to
record their first album in nearly two years, finally attempting to
equal the excellent Answer The Phone Dummy. Guitarist Kurt Bloch will
again produce, and promises some cameo appearances on the album by
local luminaries.

That's so you can hold up the different colored fenders on your Pacer. You wouldnt want the duct
tape to clash with the lime green color of your pacer and the rust color of your fender.

duct tape as a fashion statement...go figure. BUT, a true furnace technician would only use
silver duct tape. It's tradition!

out until I saw him with a shirt, but even there it is open at the front,

Subject: Trivial Trivia

The much discussed duct tape (and my interest in the topic)
has got me thinking that we need a project to fill the void
between now and the Spring release of the new CD. The
following is the beginning of a link for Seth's page
(perhaps?) that I call Trivial Trivia -- the minuscule
things we have discussed/read/heard/concluded about SG that
dedicated and stir-crazy SG fans would care to know about.

The distorted/altered Superunknown cover photo (the
'Screaming Elf' as known to veteran SOMMS list members),
is actually a collage of all four SG members.

In an early interview in The Rocket, a local Seattle paper
and the first publication SG appeared on the cover of, CC
listed the following as the first albums that creatively and
     emotionally kicked his ass.

     Killing Joke - 'Killing Joke'
Alice Cooper - 'Billion Dollar Babies'
Meat Puppets - 'Meat Puppets II'

"Come on, we LIKE IT ALL" = Yes, we beat this one to death.
This IS what Chris is saying in Spoonman.

Discovery Park in Seattle is where the 'Hunger Strike' video
was filmed -- lighthouse, beach and all. I believe the park
is about a 20 minute walk from where CC grew up on Jones St.
     (can anyone confirm).

Corey (Deb informed us) is a puppy that died of parvo virus
that Chris dedicated SG's Self Pollution Radio set to.

Like Suicide (CC explained) is about a bird that tragically
flew into his house and broke its neck. CC was in his
basement trying to write lyrics and heard the impact.
Although he was expecting a burglar, he instead encountered
the beautiful creature and subsequently crushed its skull
with a brick to stop it from suffering.

665-667 contains a hidden message recorded backwards on the
track. Chris MacKenzie tells us CC is singing "Santa is my
king, I help him on Christmas Eve, I love you Santa Baby".
Reminder: if you jumble the letters in the name Santa you
can come up with Satan. SG humor -- gotta luv it.

Matt does lead vocals on one song on the official 'Attack of
     the Killer Tomatoes' soundtrack.

Kim (Deb informed us) does the vocals on Exit Stonehenge.

Knights of the Soundtable - There is usually confusion with
respect to the cost of joining SG's official fanclub. $2
will get you a flyer regarding merchandise. $8 will make
you a member of the fanclub and you will receive a welcome
package with a band bio, picture, and other goodies.

Inflatable Soule is a fairly new and very talented band with
Peter Cornell (Chris's brother) and Suzy and Katy Cornell
(yep, sisters) in the lineup. Sound = nothing like SG

Well, i have to put in my own duct tape experience. I have a pair
of shoes, namely nike flights, that i have had since 7th grade. And
today i still wear these delapanated shoes. For playing basketball
outside and stuff. The one thing that has kept these shoes together
for so long has been-you guessed it, duct tape. Now, to get this
related to music.
Does anyone else think that the current idea of chord-chord-rest in
modern rock songs today is gonna get old fast? Or will it be like
postpunk and stick around? I mean, Toadies, Green Day, and someone
else i can't remember are using this idea throughout their entire
songs on the radio. In green day's case, you hear the intro and you
think "this song is gonna rock" And then the only thing that
changes are that the other instruments come in and it stays that way
for most of the song. That gets boring. In the Toadies case, they
intersperse the rests with some other ideas that make the song
rock. And now to relate this to soundgarden.
Does anyone thing that soundgarden will conform to this
trend of chord-chord-rest? i hope not. They already have a song
that starts out chord-different chord-second chord again-rest, but
that's only in the intro, and no other band would think of the
tuning they use to play that song. Ok, i'll stop babbling now. -j

p.s. anyone think that at time c.o.c.'s music sounds vaguely like
something you might hear from soundgarden?

Duct tape is a very important topic. Since Chris uses it to make wallets
when he is recording an album...It just adds to the allure. I refuse to
believe that there is multi-colored duct tape. I've been to the hardware
stores. I know the difference between a phillips head and a regular
screwdriver. There is no red/green/blue duct tape. It is the figment

This is like the inside of a football huddle. The coach is yelling at
you (hehe..think of seth and his cries of "soundgarden, soundgarden,
soundgarden") because you're losing to the west side posies by 21. You
should be concentrating on the game and your position. But no! Your
worried who's buying the beer after the game? Will your car take the
corners at 80 after billy jimbob worked on the suspension. You want to know
will sally and bill get married because sally is pregnant? Of course, you
start talking about the (shotgun) wedding reception...what band will be
playing, what kind of beer will be served? All very important stuff!
But trivial as it relates to your present condition.

> Killing Joke - 'Killing Joke'

I pulled out my early 80's goth albums. Joy Division - Unknown
Pleasures, The Cure - self title Bauhaus etc. early SG never really
started sounding like sabbath till badmofi. Though there were parts of
ultramega that are pure sabbath...it's still pretty punk/goth oriented.

They were really influenced by these early goth legends. Listen to the demo
for "Missing", early 80's goth! "Hunted Down", same thing Can anyone else
hear the similarities?

This'll be fun. ;) Kinda like the band names. What name did that
person decide, anyway?

Ok, I'll add some. Here goes...

Even though Chris wears a fork and bracelets, he is NOT gay, nor is he
bisexual. He is just happily married to Susan Silver.

Chris Cornell says that his fork means, "The end of the world as we
know it."
or something like that.

Chris snowboards, as does Eddie Vedder, but we still don't know how
good they are.

Hater is a band that Ben Shepherd and Matt Cameron was in. Matt sings
on Sad McBain.

Truly is a band with Soundgarden's original bass player, Hiro Yamamoto.

Jason Everman was a geek, and poor bass player, who played (breifly)
with Soundgarden after Hiro left.

Under Kim's beard, he is just Nothingman.

Chris Cornell didn't own any shirts prior to Louder Than Love, and then
didn't wear them much because it took him a while to get used to the
feel of them.

Chris Cornell likes silver duct tape, unless he's making a wallet, then
he uses black.

Chris Cornell has big breasts.

Ben Shepherd likes to jump around a lot, especially when someone is
filming him and planning to call it "Motorvision."

Kim is an opera singer who dated Chris and gave him singing lessons.

Soundgarden aren't Satanists, but they talk about Satan a lot.

Kim hasn't always had a beard. It fell off once before a picture was
taken of him. This picture is in the Screaming Life book, but
Nothingman has not yet seen it, so he thinks Kim has had a beard since
he was born.

The music of Soundgarden is depressing and happy all at the same time.

Soundgarden might be at Lollapaloza, but they might not.

Moon Druid is a doof. He sent an unsubscribe message to the list,
after constantly flaming others for the same thing. (It's ok, Moon, we
forgive ya)

People who unsubscribe to the list should be shot, except Moon Druid,
because he will be returning.

Old people like Soundgarden too.

Whoever doesn't like Soundgarden should be shot.

Ok, so they all aren't TOTALLY true, and others don't have anything to
do with Soundgarden (they do, but in a weird, twisted way), but I had
fun writing them. :)

Sure it does. Just look at any of your local ski bums. They have duct
tape holding their pants together, their gloves, and occasionally the
tips of their skis. Snowboarders usually only have duct tape on their
gloves, though. they don't get those nasty edge cuts on the sides of

I've just got to reiterate my love for this song. This is the best

Chris is just this basic utilitarian guy and duct tape is sort of

Hello! I've been on here for about 3 days (well, been getting mail from
this even).. and I've not contributed anything yet.. so i'll just say a
few things.. Up until about 1993 I always thought grunge (sorry) was a
bit boring, but when i first listened to my mates copy of superunknown, I
went out and bought louder than love and badmotorfinger about 20 minutes
later.. since then, I reckon I must have listen to all the SG albums
about 1000 times each! Soundgarden rare just out of this world!! they're
basically my no. 2 band, with the doors being no. 1. Anyway, since then,
I've seen soundgarden once (my only opportunity) at the Reading festival
(95).. and although I've read messages about them not being as good as
they've been, I was still totally in awe of actually seeing them at last.
When they played "searching with my good eye closed", i couldn't believe
it! it was heavy as fuck!! compared with the album version, it was
something else! so i'm really into that song right now.. So what can you
all tell me about soundgarden? All I know about them is they're from
seattle and thats about it.. I THINK i've got all their albums (fopp,
screaming life, superunknown, badmotorfinger, louder than love, ultramega
ok), and I understand they were on some late 80s compilation album.. any
idea about this? I basically want to get anything I can about SG as
possible. Well, bye for now!

Just out of interest, is there anyone from England on here? In particular
any rock chicks? :)

favorite SG tunes? They can be covers, anything, just PLEASE a) don't put in
more that five SPECIFICS (that takes the fun out of it) and b) don't go on
with your five favorites of every band you knew existed. Remember, this is a
Soundgarden list!!! I'd be happy to tally them up and let you guys know what
the popular vote tells us (using a 5 point for 1st, 4 for 2nd, etc.) rating
system. Remember also to send them to somms@mit.edu, not the journal address.
This could make Seth send out another warning. (BTW Seth, the picture is soon
on the way!!!) It would be cool to hear from oldies as well as new members!!!

If that question doesn't satisfy you, how about this: If SG had contributed
to the "Saturday Morning: Cartoon's Greatest Hits" collection (which, by the
way, rocks if you lived for Saturday morning like I did in the 70's and 80's)
what song would they do?

If you want, here's something you can try. If your stereo has
surround sound (dolby pro logic preferably), turn off all the speakers
except for the rear and play Rusty Cage. It has the guitar just fine,
but when Chris starts singing its just the "scream" from the begining
of each line of the first verse. It sounds pretty cool with just the
scream and no vocals.

Yeah!

It burns well (huh

Fire is cool.

> Plus, MacGuyver used it, like, every five minutes.
Yeah and McGuyver is the king of all. There is no one i would
rather have with me if i were tied up and about to be thrown into
a river with my feet dipped in cement. McGuyver would like break
the knot and duct tape the cement to the bridge so the guys
couldn't throw me off. And of course, the duct tape would hold.
because duct tape rules.

> Chris is just this basic utilitarian guy and duct tape is sort of

Yeah, and he can play so many instruments and duct tape does so
many things...Maybe he uses duct tape on his guitars as well. I
think Kim uses duct tape in concert to identify what wierd tuning
each of the guitars he uses is in. Nah, he probably just knows.

> Maybe that's how he lost all his hair. Just wrapped his head in duct tape
> and then ripped it all off.
Actually, this is a good thought. I think this is the way it
happened. And now he's trying to grow his hair back. But he
likes duct tape so much that it destroying his hair was forgiven
by him. Or maybe the silver kind destroyed his hair, so now he
hates that, and that's why he uses black duct tape (even though i
have never seen such a thing--i've seen electrical tape in EVERY
color, though) to make those wallets out of.

And one more thing. To all you UK people talking about all the
shite on MC&IS, where is the shite at? Is it mainly located on

I have only listened to the first one and almost all of the songs
kick major ass. Or are you uk people afraid of ballads and slow
songs? Old well. I don't mean to stereotype, but this is the

Someone asked about the Pay Per View (PPV) event Soundgarden was on and
what PPV was. PPV is a service if you have cable that they show special
events (concerts, sporting events, etc.) for an additional fee of $10-$40.
Soundgarden was the backup band for Guns and Roses (GNR) in a June 1992 PPV
event. GNR had guest stars Lenny Kravits, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry.
Soundgarden was on less than an hour but the entire show was approximately
three hours long. Soundgarden was excellent of course. Most of the songs
they played were from Badmotofinger. Hope this answers your questions.

P.S. Wouldn't it be great if Soundgarden did a PPV concert
where they were the main band?

The entire SM cartoon collection is the anti-garden! And I love it.
It's beyond syrap and sugary coated pop songs. Check out Matthew Sweet's
version of Scooby Doo! or the nothing but the frosting on the beater
sounds of "Sugar Sugar" from mary lou lord! The only song I was
dissapointed with was Sublime's version of my FAVE cartoon EVER _Hong
Kong Phooey_!!!! They turned a cheesey disco song into a reggae
dancehall thing.

As for SG, I can see them ending a set in say '88-'89..with the crunching
guitar riffs of "The Tra La La Song (One Banana Two Banana)"...which
would of course segue into Sub Pop Rock City with chris going into his
dialogue about being on the road for a very long time (laugh, if you've
heard S>P Rock City (live)!!!...you'll know what I'm talking about)...
Chris would fall into the drum set screaming "I've got one banana! I've
got one banana!"..under the monotonous drone of Kim's feedback!
