I agree in that a band can be so far idelogically from a person it can
alienate them. You may enjoy the music but the lyrics make you cringe. Being
a woman I have run across that with alot of bands. The cock rock attitude can
be tough to take sometimes. With Soundgarden, I don't think they are overall
sexist in their lyrics sometimes they say some off the wall things. (the Aol
thing we have discussed already) but basically they have no " me caveman, you
my woman, I'm gonna bang you!" type songs. OK, I know "Big dumb Sex" sort of
fits in that category but I always felt it was intended to be a joke!!! When
the rumor went around that The Offsprings line "Gotta keep'em seperated" was
intended to be the races and they were seperatists. I listened to it a
little differently. I don't know if that is the case or not. I truely don't
believe musicians have to be role models. If Chris let's say is a "stupid ass
womanizer" that is truely none of our business unless he tries to inflict
those beliefs on us in a lyric. The only person he truely has to answer to
for that is Ms Silver and somehow I get the feeling she isn't going to take
that shit!

Hey everyone,

It's been awhile but I'm back. Does anyone remeber me? probably not :)
Anyway notes of Interest picked up a Promo only Pic disc version of Louder
then Love anyone have any info on this? it's got no cover etc...clear sleeve
packaging :) it's a great pic of the band tho :)

And about SG in Rolling Stone..could someone please type up some of the info
re new song titles...as down here in Australia we are unlikely to get the
American edition of rolling stone all that quickly...and the OZ edition may
not have it in.

But for the Australian fans...SG interview in Guitar World, about 3 pages
long :) Jan edition with SP on the cover. Plus if you are in Brissy and want
to hear a copy of Somms....the Red Hill cd rental place has a copy for rent,
if you don't have it and want to hear it it's worth it :) Just glad I
stumbled across my own copy :)

filled in with toucans and pineapples and shit. I also have the glow in

that is kind of army green with a tricycle missing a wheel one the front,
and the wheel on the back next to "come stand me up..."

From: "Mercyhurst Prep Library" <mercylib@erie.net>
Subject: berryBomb and PJ

I have to agree that when PJ first broke, they were alternative.
That's also about the time that I got out of my rut and discovered
alternative music too. (This after years of being a YES-only person,
and even then it was only the post-84 or new YES) Not long after I
made my discovery tho, it seemed that I was hearing alot more of what I
had to term alternative on the radio, any radio. That's when I began
to philosophize about the whole scene. If I'm hearing it on my usual
radio station, is it still alternative? What IS alternative? And at
that time I was also looking critically at my "normal", until then
anyway, choice of so called progressive music. It was to me no longer
progressive. The very word indicates music that is on the cutting
edge, trying new things, etc. Progressive bands haven't done that in
years, not even YES with my guitar god Trevor Rabin. I know it's in
him, but they weren't doing it. Alternative on the other hand was
trying new things, but suddenly the listening public was being more
exposed to it, which to me would seem to make it more mainstream. Now
I think we've reached a stage where mainstream is what would have been
called alternative just a few years ago. I do think we have PJ to
thank for that, also Nirvana. It at least got Spoonman and a few other
Sg songs some airtime around here!

Back to the subject of PJ, a band I have a number of gripes about
anyway. Good ol' Eddie Vedder is suddenly calling the shots in the
band, esp. w/ the firing of Dave Abbruzesse, which to me was totally
uncalled for. I also trace this all back to Vs days. That's when
things started to go sour in the band. PJ is a band in trouble. What
happened? Did they get too popular too fast? Yes, could well be. I
also hypothesize that good ol' EV cannot stand the public spotlight on
him. He's a bit unbalanced as it is, and I say that b/c everyone
harkens back to his awful childhood. A cop-out in my books, ya know,
like GET OVER IT! When I first found PJ they had a fire and an energuy
that I hadn't seen in a band in a long time. They lost that spark by
the end of the Ten tour. PJ is burnt out, and they won't admit it.
The best thing they could do is take some time off, not record at all
and then see if they still want to go on. The media ban of theirs is
so bogus, b/c of the cover stories I mentioned in an earlier post. If
it suits, they'll do it. Hypocracy all over the place! I don't like
EV and never did, and in my mind he's part of what ruined PJ. I, for
one, miss the good old days of the first tour, Lolla and all that, when
PJ and Sg used to hang around and chum around. I never did care for
McCready's playing, Stone did improve but I don't think he's using it.
Is it a lack of musicianship...or is it that they are burned out? You
decide! The Jack Daniels bit...well, now, you see EV looking and
acting drunk on stage, yet later they'll claim he wasn't, it was just
an act...well, I'm sick of his acts! :(

I also agree--doing large stadium shows IS NOT alternative. It's money
grubbing! If PJ was so serious about keeping ticket costs low, they'd
take a cut in what they get from it, right?? That whole last tour
really put a block of ice on my enthusiasm for the band. I was in
Seattle when they were cancelling and regrouping and then saying they
might do some shows, they won't do any shows, etc, etc, ad nauseum.
Know what? People in Seattle don't like PJ. They're not real keen on
Curtis Management either...but with me, that's a whole new topic so
don't get me started.

OK, end of lecture for today, lest you mistake me for Nothingman!
All comments welcome!

later...deb

My favorite one I got a few years ago. Its black and it has a small kind

says badmotofinger under it. On the back it says "the wreck is going

The only other ones I have are the kickstand and the badmotorfinger

Okay, this is not SG related - tough cookies.... But if you are a blues lover
and enjoy listening to good straight on guitar playing - take your hip self
down to the local record shop and get:

"Blue Day for the Blues" - Rory Gallagher...

You who know me from the early days of this list, know I'm a very big fan of
Gallagher. Rory was a rare white bluesman who could blow away most of the
guitar players of today. He never compromised his music for frame, he was
never recognized for his talent, and this CD is not one of those money grubbing
pieces of junk that is put out after the death of the musician.

Both the music and the liner notes tells the story of Rory and his music.
Gallagher gave us 20 some years of damn fine blues mixed with rock n' roll. I
have all his work and it saddens me to know there will be no more.

I hope that whoever wrote this ws only kidding. If not, some serious
psychological help is in order. David, you are actually kind of funny.
Superunkown was, to date, the most eclectic collection of SG music on an
album. What other albums are as diverse as SU? I mean SU runs the gamut
from My Wave to Head Down, Like Suicide to Kickstand, etc., etc. I think
that the last album was the most creative I have seen them in quite some
time, although not necessarily their best stuff. ---

Has anybody heard of the school he purports to be from? I just fingered
it and got a 'host unknown' message. I think some asshole is trying to
stir up controversy. He says he's from WBC.EDU, and I suppose he also
plays in Pearl Jam...

I think it's a pretty well-known fact that Soundgarden are also huge fans
of Rush. At least Kim Thayil for sure, but I think the rest of the band
too. An interview with Kim a long time ago, he said roughly "We used to
sit around with our friends and do sit-around-with-your-friends things
and listen to Rush". I believe or believed he was referring to getting
wasted. The interviewer knew what he was getting at, and said "...and
Party" And Thayil agreed. Point is, he likes Rush.

Can someone please tell me what Alternative music is? Alternative to
what?? Does ANYBODY on the list know that Soundgarden took part in an
album that protested the label "alternative". No honest hard-working
band wants to be labeled alternative. I repeat "HONEST, HARD-WORKING".
Of course every band who has no hope in hell of ever making a career out
of being a musician wants to be labeled 'alternative' because the media
has the public believing this category of music exists, and that it is
popular. So all the mindless people go out with the idea that they will
be cool and hip if they listen to this 'alternative' music and buy 'it'.
Anyway, the liner notes read:
This is not an alternative rock collection. "Alternative" rock
does not exist. It is a myth on par with Elvis sightings, Quality
airline food and Stress-free relationships. No, what you are listening
to is simply twenty-one songs...
Remember, this is a message from the very bands you are labeling
'alternative'. I think the point is that ANYBODY can listen to ANY
music, and that you don't have to be part of any group or have to dress a
certain way to listen to them. Either you like it or you don't. Anybody?

it has come to pass that people are rebelling against the "alternative"
namesake. FIRST- htis label was desginated by the media as a way to desribe
music, whatever it is at the time, that is not in the mainstream of radio, or
billboard music. bands like Otis, Grither, Paw, Hater, Prick. Even though we do
not see ourselves as listening to alternative music (because that is in our
mainstream of what we listen to), we use that term to describe what type of
muscic we listen to when people ask. That is all it is.....

Sure, man, but why are you using the name then? Why are you buying into
it? It describes nothing. The bands YOU like do not want to be labeled
alternative, so why are you labeling them that way? It just makes me
laugh when people talk about 'alternative' this and 'alternative' that
like it is some kind of special quality. "They were more alternative
then..." or "that is not an alternative thing to do". Alternatively, we
could alternate and call this the alternative mailing list, or is that
too alternative? Anyway, I'm not jumping on anyone in particular, I'm
just saying SG took part in this anti-alternative-labelling thing, so it
seems kind of silly to use the term on the list. I guess I thought most
of us were enlightened.

Yeah, but there is music now that years ago would have been laughed at or
something else terrible would happen to it. Today, that music can be
found on "alternative" radio stations. ok, you don't like the label?
Call it modern rock then. Is that better? Modern rock is defined (by
me) as rock that is different that mainstream pop and roots rock and
usually metal. Country fits into the roots rock cartegory. so does
Hootie. any questions?

Okay first of all--does anyone know where i can get the SG album with
their cover of "Come Together" on it? My brother has heard it on 104.3
(We live in NJ) a couple times and told that it is pretty good. I'm
also interested in getting songs not found on the albums or Screaming
Life or Fopp, but "Come Together" has been nagging at me for a year and a
half now.

Whoever wrote about how good Matt Cameron is--No Sh*t, man. You should
see me whiling away the hours playing the same track over and over,
trying to play it. Then you should see me at my set going nuts cause i
can't do it. ARGGH. Am i the only drummer that worries himself about his
fills being too reptitive? My drumming is the only thing that i'm really
anal about, in terms of getting it right.

When i heard the new album was coming this summer, my reaction was:
	F*CK YEAHH!!!!

Also, i'm in the middle of compiling a tape of tracks not readily
found...so far i have: LIVE TRACKS: Blind Dogs
				     Kyle Petty Son of Richard
No Attention Fell on Black Days (demo)
				     My Wave

Non-Album TRACKS: Birth Ritual (demo), Into the Void, Girl U Want, Stray
CAt Blues, She's A politician, Seasons, Fell on Black Days (video
Version), She like Surprises, Like suicide (acoustic)
Oh yeah, one more live track: Slaves & Bulldozers

Umm...I'm probably gonna get more stuff off of imports, but if anyone has
stuff from the Sub-Pop days, i'm interested in tapes of 'em.
Laters all
