I was just mulling it over and realized that I would discontinue
listening to any band if I didn't think that they were morally
up to par. I say that because I would never listen to skin head rock
because skin heads are morons. I'd have the same reaction if I found
out that Chris Cornell were a stupid ass womanizer. His lyrics are
great and the musics good but the underlying issues would bother me.
This also applies to the drug smoking pot head Eddie Vedder and the
rest of Peral Jam. I can no longer listen to their music because
something in the back of my head says," Eeewwwww." In closing I would
just like to reiterate that if Chris Cornell were a stupid ass
womanizer I would no longer listen to Soundgardens music and if that
seems stupid thats up to you...

What's with all this slagging off the Pumpkins???? Has everyone actually
heard the latest album??? It's a masterpiece!!!

Okay, so some people might argue that Corgan does far too much overlaying in
the studio, but have you any idea how fucking difficult it is to pull
off???? And then there's the issue of playing it live... well, I always
thought that part of the experience was to see how the band cope without
overlays etc., and having seen them twice, I can tell you that they cope
pretty fucking well.

And, don't forget, Soundgarden use a LOT of overlays, but it doesn't affect
their live show now does it??

I think the main problem here is that some people think it's 'uncool' to
like certain bands e.g. when the Seattle scene went mainstream, loads of
people stopped listening to Nirvana + Pearl Jam because so many other people
started...

Music is Music, Open your mind + Stop letting MTV dictate your views.

And if you REALLY hate SP that much, don't fucking listen to them!

Actually, it was Eddie and Al Jourgensen from Ministry who had had the
contest going. You can read all about it in "Freak Like Me: The storey
of the Jim Rose Circus Sideshow". this book is excellent and has many
stories from the Lollapalooza 92 tour.

Ya know what? It does make sense to me. It sounds hypocritical on the
surface, but stop and think about it. Do we really need to support a
band that condones a life style we, as the paying public, don't like,
don't live and don't care for? Maybe some of these ragamuffins who are
using up good recording contracts would get the message if the buying
public more or less boycotted them.

Speaking for myself, I used to be hugely into PJ. Man, when they firdt
caught my attention and were saying how they wanted to be
different--and they seemed so different--I thought that this was the
start of a revolution in the music biz. What happened to them? Did
they burn out or find out it's hard to go against an entire system or
what? I began to see alot of what they were saying and what they were
actually doing didn't jive. For example, a zine editor I know was told
in a most rude manner by their management that PJ did not want ANYTHING
written about them for ANY reason. At this same time tho, they were on
the cover of SPIN, RS, Musician, GW and others. That seemed awfully
hypocritical to me and still does. As for Eddie Vedder...I never did
care for him and his antics ever since Vs was being recorded really
turned me off. I still like Jeff and Stone. McCready even has my
respect now for getting his life in order and going public about it.
But EV can go jump off the nearest tall peak in the Cascades. Things
aren't right in PJland, which I've been saying for years now. Do I
listen to them anymore? Not much, and when I do, only to Ten. Will Sg
ever piss me off? I may not agree w/ some of their macho man antics
and beer drinking and stuff, but all in all they're cool, decent guys.
It'll take alot, and I sure as heck hope they don't go the way of PJ in
my books!

What's anyone else say about Laughing Boy's comments? Are we both
being hypocritical or are we making some sense?

later...deb

When Pearl Jam first broke onto the scene, they were in all sense, an
"alternative" band. In my opinion, they stayed alternative until the release of
their second album, whatever you want to call it. Eddie's voice went through a
dramatic change due to his frequency of visiting Mr. Jack Daniel's. The guitar
playing wasn't up to "Ten" standards and they had just gotten rid of their
first drummer, the best one to this date. The big hit single "daughter" was
drowning in mediocrity and everyone and their grandmother knew the damn song.
With the release of "Vitalogy", everything continued to go downhill, granted
that McCready didn't play much on it. The album was full of instant pop song
hits, and left us real PJ fans with a sense of loss. Eddie couldn't handle
screaming the lines of those harsh, fast songs anymore (and still can't).

And if alternative is still what it meant back in 1991, PJ is not alternative.
doing large stadium shows is not alternative. Backing out of shows because of a
lack of security is not alternative (actually, those are the best shows!!).

hi everyone! it is nice to read all your posts again after a long break.
before i go any further, i was reading the posts a couple of days ago and i
just couldn't believe what i was reading. practically every letter had
nothing to do with soundgarden. it started to get idiotic until i read seth's
plea for the mailing list to stop straying from the topic. thanks seth.

okay onto my soundgarden related topic....i was in the library trying to
study for physics but like most college students out there, i quickly got
bored and my mind wandered. i then saw the new february issue of rolling
stone with layne stayley on the cover. as i looked through the
issue, i found to my delight a soundgarden article. let me repeat
that..there is a soundgarden article in the new issue of rolling stone.
it was about half a page long i think. it was pretty informative in my
opinion. it talked about how our boys are hard at work on a follow up to
superunknown.it listed some of the possible song names which will be on
the new album. it said that we should be expecting it sometime in june, i
believe. so to everyone out there, look through the latest issue of
rolling stone featuring layne stayley on the cover and look for the
soundgarden article. oh yeah before i forget..i know that there are a
lot of college students on somms. i was wondering if you guys could
state the college that you are going to after your name, for example. i
know that a number of you do that already, but for those of you who do
not, please do. i just think it would be kinda cool.thanks.stay hard.

As did 'deb'.

It's good to be honest about this - there is no way, if one reads the
music press, that you can avoid having an image of musicians, an idea of
their character. The number of "Wagner was a Nazi bastard" threads in
classical newsgroups shows this isn't just a rock/pop thing.

I was thinking
about the recent Smashing Pumpkins
debate, and perhaps one can dislike a band for their music, but if one
*hates* them it is the public persona that leads to that heightened
aversion. Yes, no?

Laughingboy's eg was whether Chris was "a stupid ass womanizer," and I'd
have a similar problem there. Early articles referred to dubious
goings-on in tour buses but it was usually relayed as rumour. He may have
grown up a bit. In the case of Soundgarden it is good to distinguish
between members - Kim has often stated his anti-racist/sexist/homophobic
views, whereas Chris has shown a tendency towards the latter a few times.

It is when things get expressed through the music that I dislike that
this becomes an issue for me. That or when a group is somewhat
hypocritical, as in the PJam example.
