gee, it's been quite awhile, fellow somms persons-------i was recently
flipping through some old cds, and i came across the singles soundtrack
(probably everyone's first "alternative" album)-----i listened to "seasons"
an acoustic number by none other than chris cornell-----it really blew my
mind---chris' voice is so prominent in that acoustic ballad. does anyone
agree with me in saying where is some more mellowed out acoustic stuff by
soundgarden and/or chris?
one more thing---i was listening to Q101 (chicago), at about 4 am, and they
were playing an entire soundgarden album straight thru.....it was
incredible....i didn't know if it was an old album, or possibly cut from
alive in the superunknown ( i was rather shitfaced at the time)....all i
remember is chris singing along to the guitar riff from footsteps (pearl
jam)....someone help me out on this one.........Big JOe

I do think Billy's voice is bad. So I do listen to my Soundgarden albums.

Please stop the Smashing Pumpkins bashing here. Firstly, there are SG fans
like me who are also Pumpkin fans, and I don't subscribe to the SG list
because I want to hear people bash SP. Secondly, this is a Soundgarden
list, and that should be the foremost topic.

Anyway, back to SG. Does anybody kinda see a similarity between this one
Silverchair song (I don't know the name) and Kyle Petty, Son of Richard?
The main chords kinda sound similar, also like 1970 by the Stooges.

I was just thinking about screensavers. Does anyone know of any
Soundgarden screensavers? I gotta have one. I was also thinking that
someone compile some code which produces a screen saver of the BMF wheel
spinning and bouncing all around the screen like an out-of-control
circular saw-blade. Just a thought.

p.s. ...all the while playing Rusty Cage at 110dB...

My first "alternative" (as it related to the environment around me) album.
Hmmm... had to be REM's _Document_ album. I finally heard an REM song on the
radio ( "the one I love" ), decided they didnt suck as bad as my metal bud's
said...and I bought the tape. Still one of my favorite's. If you listen
close to the song "Gardening at Night" from REM's first EP you can hear Stipe
mumble the word: Sound Garden.... no shit!

Oh yeah! I distinctly remember playing them the tape right after we heard
Guns n Roses for the first time! On vinyl even! Circa '87 less than a month
from it's original release date. They sounded so fresh back then! What
happened? I think they just got too big for their own good and sorta became
a cartoon with all the fights, sub abuse and axel..... If you're
thinking....GnR...they suck! Well you're right, they do. But you *had* to
be listening to radio and mtv in '87-'88 to understand why they broke. GnR
was a welcome fresh breath of air! The first live EP, uzi
suicide..something?...was killer! And I know this statement is
sacrilege...but when I heard Mother Love Bone's _Apple_ and/or _Shine_ for
the first time in '89-'90 (I cant remember which one I heard first). I
thought Andy Wood sounded a lot like Axel and Steve Tyler.

If you get ahold of the bootleg Stolen Prayers or Poncier. There are a
couple acoustic CC songs. Fluttergirl and Nowhere but you. There is also a
demo of spoonman that would be called acoustic. That set contains SG's best
non released song: "Missing".

oh, i was just touching the tip of the iceberg by mentioning smashing
pumpkins. jeezuz, 85% of the commercally successful musicians nowadays
are vastly overrated. (well actually, people with any semblance of
musical knowledge never took bands like green day seriously
anyway...maybe they don't fit the definition of `overrated' since the
only ones `overrating' them in the first place are people who don't
know what they're talking about.)

yes, `overrated' could include bands like green day, nirvana (from a musical
standpoint...although cobain was a pioneer in the resurgence of 70's
style straight-ahead power-pop, like it or not), bush, silverchair,
offspring...you can go back to the 80's and toss in certain glam bands
with no musical ability whatsoever like poison and warrant...i guess
it depends who is doing the `rating'...if the masses get to decide
what bands are the most `musically inclined', then i guess michael
bolton, hootie and the b-fish and mariah carey are the true talents,
and bands like soundgarden, morphine, sugar and faith no more are the
bottom dwellers...

sigh...later.

Vasant, you're right... the Smashing Pumpkins thing is done. But the
rest of this note isn't addressed to you.

I'm sorry I've helped prolong it as long as I did (being one of the
merely two or three people who participated in the "bashing"). So,
yes, let's get back to SG.

BUT, before we do... I just want to say that I am NOT letting this
drop simply because someone is telling me to shut up on the basis that
they like a band I don't. Everyone here has a right to like any band
they want... well, folks, I've got every goddamn right to dislike
whoever I want. I've gotta say, I find it rather bizarre that the
only time someone cries, "Hey, this isn't about Soundgarden!" is when
a band they like gets trashed.

Well, tough shit. I don't like SP, and I'm not going to. Clown
doesn't like PJ. Some things don't change. I'm sure if I brought up
G n' R (not to say I like them), there would be plenty of you to beat
up on me, and no one complaining. So let's watch who's calling the
kettle black, okay?

I've gotten a heap of mail from a few assholes who can't let people
hold legitimate opinions (sorry, Seth, but this was the easiest way to
write to them all at once... my sincere apologies). So feel free to
continue the barrage... I'm up for it... let's just do it in private,
okay???

Once again, sorry Seth, and sorry to all and any list members who've
been annoyed by my shitty mood lately. :)>

Take care, all,
Glenn
