Ha! _Just_ as I was reading this, Q101 (Chicago) comes on with its "4 in a
row from Pearl Jam" feature which is done 5 days a week. I'm not saying I
don't like it, just thought I would point out that they're on the radio.
There's nothing wrong with being on the radio though. If pearl jam, or any
other band for that matter, are trying to give people what they want,
trying to make them happy, why are so many people trying so hard *not* to
be pleased? Just to prove that they can't be understood, or are _so_
unique that they can't identify with masses? Some people should just get
down from their own pedestal.

I agree that PJ isn't all that great- their last album, vitalogy, in my
opinion sucks. I've liked SG for years, (not too many, at least 3 or 4)
and i can truly say that I have liked.heard of NIN _WAY_ before any of
this MTV/Closer shit.

I think that the main driving force in musical choices today is
MTV. The only reason Sliverchair is any popular at all is b/c MTV
annointed them as the successers of Nivrana just like Bush is the next
PJ. MTV has much more to do w/ success than radio does- basically- if
MTV likes it , it gets played and it gets popular. there is a lot of
good music that will NEVER get played on MTV. I know a lot fof people
here at the U of M (where I go to school) that have their musical choices
be determined by MTV and have no history of good bands- for example, a
friend of mine, while in a record store, asked me if Pink Floyd's _The
Wall_ was any good. see what I mean? can you say MTV generation?

Subject: THEY DIDN'T SELL OUT

Look, I just had to respond to some of the ignorance that was posted to the
list on 11/23. Soundgarden did not sell out with the release of "Alive in
The Superunknown." They tried to explore a new media. Did the first bands
who put videos out "sell out." Some of you may say yes. Try to perceive
multimedia and videos as different entities from the music itself. if the
video gives the song a special meaning, then it's a bonus. If it just lets
you see the band, then you have that much more insight into them. If the
video just sucks, then shut the fucking t.v. off and crank up your stereo.
The same applies to the cd+ and your computer. If you don't have a
computer, then you can just by the EP and you may get a few songs/versions
you didn't have before. Be happy that you at least have the *opportunity*
to take advantage of this potential amplification of your appreciation for
the music of Soundgarden. If you're doubtful, check someone else's cd+
out, or ask for a preview of it. Don't like it, DON'T BUY IT.
My advice is buy it.
Hope I didn't offend any one.
                        Too much.
Okay, maybe I do a little.

To Jen and all the other young pups out there, I've got good news for you.
Coming from a thirty year young person, you don't wake up on your thirtieth
birthday and say " I think I'll burn all my Soundgarden records today and put
on some nice Michael Bolton!!" It doesn't work that way!! It's what you were
raised with. BTW, three quarters of SG are older than me so why shouldn't
someone at my old age like them? And also thaink about this when you look at
your Diana Ross-loving dad, if he liked the same kind of music as you, would
you go to a concert with him or would that be the most embarrassing moment of
your life? Last year I took my 41 year young brother to the SG show in San
Jose and he loved it. Now my 17 year old nephew asks why I didn't invite him
too. At the time, all he knew from SG was "Spoonman" and I didn't think he
liked them. He saw the video and thought that Artis WAS Soundgarden. I think
"man, those guys are lost!!" were his words. Why would I invite him? Now he
claims that SG are his favorite band (I'm a bad influence) and I have to
remind him of the time that he asked for Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby" for
Christmas. Now he dies of embarrassment!!

Thanks Dana, I was getting just a little bit up tight with the "You have to be
young to understand Soundgarden". Why must there be an "age" link to
everything? Why should anyone on this list care how old you are - we are all
here because of one main reason....

I haven't checked my e-mail for a while and I just read that SG were online
last week. What did they talk about? Any word on a UK tour, or a new album?
How much warning do they usually give that they (or any other band for that
matter) will be online? Did they mention any plans to go online again in the
(near) future? Is there a transcript anywhere?

Hi everyone! I am new to the SG digest and probably(judging by the content
of the first volume of "somms") not a typical SG fan.
First of all I think buying anything but the music or seeing them in concert
is a waste of money(i.e. buying the t-shirts, the stickers, the hats. etc.)
I am a fan of the music, not the image. The only thing I care about as far
as SG goes, is when their next album is coming out.
A little bit about me(like you care): I am a 26 year old who returned to
college this year after taking 5 years off to do that whole Gen-X thing.
I attend Ball State University in Muncie, IN which is known for the fact that
David Letterman attend here(like I care). Enough about my boring life, now
to my SG experiences.
I saw SG in concert for the first time in 1994 at Hara Arena in Dayton, OH.
It was a great concert, one of the best I've seen. The only problem I had
is that I wished they would have played more off of Ultramega O.K. and
Louder than Love. The best thing about it is Chris didn't do those
cliched chats with the audience between songs. Instead they just played and
played and played.
Well, gotta run.

in the detroit area, i don't think there is one band which gets more
radio play. there are five stations that all play pearl jam's music, and
they probably get more play on each station than any other single band,
maybe any other two bands. i don't even hear the local bands that made it
big on our stations that much. so i don't know where you are, but they
are way OVERplayed here.

I think that they just don't want to ever play that song again,
unless it is on their 2010 reunion tour and they have just released the
new box-set of "soundgarden's greatest hits". it must be a drag playing
the same stuff every night when you are on the road, and I have a lot of
respect for bands who can play their hits 5000 times without going
insane. they didn't play outshined here either, but that was okay
because they played some other stuff that I would have preferred to hear
anyway.

> you can hear on the tape someone actually screaming for the band to play

too true. that is one song that I would love to hear them play
live. it is a shame that bands don't actually play some of their best
songs on stage. I sometimes wonder if that is a conscious decision,
where they don't want to play songs like new damage and holy water so
that they stay new and fresh to the band themselves. holy water is maybe
the best song off badmotorfinger imho, but it doesn't sound like a song
that would be terribly hard to re-create live. there aren't any complex
voice tracks or 20-guitar tracks to handle, so that's probably not it. oh
well, maybe they will play it here next time.

there's no reason to think that i wouldn't listen to soundgarden from
time to time, just because i think axl and slash are the definitive
musical pair of this era. i mean, that song "black hole sun" just
rocks. and chris is so hot.

do you know if they have any albums besides _superunknown_?

ps - to list newcomers, it's a _joke_!

You wouldn't believe what happened to me this weekend. Aaron from the
list from Moorhead State University brought me a copy of AITS. Isn't
that so cool? And who says the internet has no value. We've started a
major music pipeline here. So I'm officially the first Canadian to get
Alive... Well, probably not, but I think I am the first Canadian on the
list with it. I've been working on an essay all day. (after he called me
at 9:00am and I drove across town to get it) I just tried it, and I'll
post a review right away...

	yes, chris *is* very hot.

but back to seriousness, axl himself once admitted that chris
cornell was a better vocalist, observing that "he blows me away". I'm
just glad that he understands the true nature of things :)

with music and success in the industry, I think it comes down to
song-writing ability. you can have all the technical proficiency and
chops you like, and be so weighed down with skill that it hurts, but if
you can't write a song to save your life, then it's curtains for you.

I'm listening to black hole sun right now, as a matter of fact.
and I think that if some other band would have written this song before
chris did, it would have sounded a lot more cheesier. I know there are a
lot of soundgarden fans that disliked bhs once it got some airplay, but
let's face it: it is still the same song whether you just put the cd on
when you first bought it or it's been played four million times by every
radio station in the free world :)

soundgarden just strike me as a very sincere and very honest band,
who write top-notch songs and understand what true musical success is all
about. it isn't about selling twenty or so million copies of your latest
album and being seen at the mtv awards and having girls pull out their
hair and wave lighters at your gigs. it's about singing songs that are
real (ie. not bland and tasteless jukebox-filler and chart-stuffer
material), and songs that *mean* something. and I suppose that being able
to play like demons doesn't hurt the band a bit :) take that green day!
take that offspring! take that hootie! take that take that!!

man, what a tangent. did anyone notice how some of those
paragraphs didn't even have anything to do with each other, but still
thrashed on anyway?

If you have a VCR, and you have a sound card, you should have most of
what you need. You will also need the correct patch cords from your
'audio out' on your VCR to your 'line in' on your sound card. Press play
on the VCR and you should get some sound through the speakers. Start up
Wave-editor (assuming you have a soundblaster) or another sound-editor
and press record. Voila! You have sound recorded in a .wav file. If
you need more help or have more questions feel free to email me. CU in

I looked the other day and it appears that the footage in question is
gone. You should try to digitize it if you can. I would love to here
that again. Soundgarden has the best sense of humour.

Ok, so I'm responding to my own message, but I got interrupted. Alive in
the SuperUnknown is amazing. SG has definitely outdone itself this
time. It just blew my mind. You could spend HOURS exploring that disc!
Words can hardly do it justice. On that MTV online session, Chris said
that they were approached by people involved with that technology, and
that the band was involved from beginning to end. If that's true, then
they are gods of multimedia as well as music. The thing just screws with
your senses. There's tons of new music. Video...animations,
photos...spiders...superunknown, the bmf wheel...AAAAHHHHH!!!! It is so
cool! I will definitely have more to say about this disc. CUinTheSU!!
