I've gotta unsubscribe. Not because I don't like the list or anything
like that. My uni account gets shut down on 1st Dec, and I've finished
my degree, so I won't be back at uni next year. I haven't got a modem at
home, so I have to unsubscribe.
I'm saving up to get on the internet, so as soon as I do, the first thing
I do will be to subscribe to the SOMMS list.
Keep up the good work, Seth.

See you all in the Superunknown.

So, every "real" Soundgarden fan has Screaming life/fopp EP, well I
don't. That's a "real" shame.

Kylie Hayes - yes, open the doors to religion, then shut it before it
get's through. I'm not sceptical of religion because of a fucked up
world, I'm sceptical because I haven't seen the guy, or any of them
(apparently there's three), although that could be the beer. And yes,
please do take a look at Ireland, but if you get the chance take a look
at Israel, Yugoslavia (or whatever the fuck it's called now), Iraq and
Iran. I'm sure there's more. Oh yes, a political statement, I think we
need one. I don't think Soundgarden worship the devil either, or if
they do, it's to sell more records, and if Chris is Jesus ... er, Chris
is Jesus? I guess there's too many people with nothing better to do
 than idolise.

And somebody said that Soundgarden are "selling out", or "sold out", what
does this mean? Does it mean that more people liked the new album as
ppposed to the previous album, that it sounds more formulated, that you
get a free badge and a t-shirt when you join the fan club. Can anybody
name a band that never wanted to play to the larger audience and sell
 more records?

Well I must say that I'm a bit disappointed in the new cd+. Besides the
fact that my computer won't read it, I wasn't too excited 'bout the album
itself.
Superunknown-I expected it to be live or at least a different version
             we all have this already
Fell On Black Days-This was pretty cool, at least it was the video
version instead of the one we already have, the tune up part
             was a plus
She Likes Surprises- This was Excellent!!, what more could I say
Like Suicide-Although I really like this version, I already had it on the
             SFW soundtrack

Somewhere along the line I was led to believe that this was supposed to
be live, hence the name "Alive in the Superunknown."
Well that's just my little review, does any one out there agree?

Subject: CD Plus - long note - but Soundgarden is in there somewhere......
From: jsimpson@mail03.mitre.org (Jamesetta Simpson)

Cuts from the November 28th issue of The Washington Post - with a few side
comments from the Village Idiot.

Enhanced CDs' Blend Music, Multimedia, But Many Consumers Remain Skeptical:

It's an audio compact disc for the stereo. It's a CD-ROM for the personal
computer. It's two - two- two discs in one.

At least that's the idea behind enhanced CDs, a new consumer technology that
has begun to pop up n record and computer stores. A merging of Silicon Valley
know-how and MTV-style flash, enhanced CDs look and sound like conventional
music CDs when played on the stereo, but also offer up text, videos, photos and
even games when played on a computer's CD-ROM drive.

The format is so new - the first release began just weeks ago - that
performers and marketers are still trying to figure out what to put on the
discs besides music.

Village Idiot - "How about the ability to play the *&#$ thing"

So far, the six major record companies are tentatively betting they will, (paid
$5 to $7 dollars above the regular CD price), Sony, MCA, Polygram, Warner, BGM
and EMI-Capitol will have to total of about 100 enhanced CD titles on the
market by Christmas, including interactive works by Bob Dylan, The Rolling
Stones, Michael Jackson, Natalie Merchant, Michael Bolton, Soundgarden and the
Cranberries.

Village Idiot - "How about that Jackson and Bolton in the same sentence as
Soundgarden"

Judging by consumer reactions, however, it may take some time for typical music
fans to catch on. Shoppers interviewed at Tower Records on Pennsylvania
Avenue, NW yesterday either hadn't heard of the format or were somewhat
skeptical.

Browsing through Towers Records' CD bins, Herbert Nelson, 40, a medical
technologist from Hyattsville, pointed out that conventional CD-ROM software
provides far more multimedia content than the new enhanced CD.

Village Idiot - "Hey Herbert, better be careful - if Pearl Jam or Soundgarden
hear
your 40 - you can't go to their concerts"

Enhanced CDs certainly aren't for everyone's hardware.

Village Idiot - "Whoa - who said that"

Part of the hardware problems is that not all enhanced CD software is created
equal.

Village Idiot - "I can see the future Equal Rights for CD software - Millions
march on Washington"

There are two manufacturing formats - one known as CD Plus, the other by
several names - and each comes with its own set of compatibility problems.

It's not clear how many consumers are affected by this. Warner Music estimates
that less than 10 percent of the 12 million CD-ROM players in use in the U.S.
can't play enhanced CDs, But Billboard mag. recently reported the number may be
as high as 50%.

Whatever the case, music companies aren't going out of their way to highlight
the difficulties.

Village Idiot - "What - tell us we can't play the disc before we buy it."

Disc packages carry warnings, but mainly in small type on the back.

Village Idiot - " I must be blind - I still haven't found it - never fear
I'll look again"

"Due to variances in computer hardware, we regret we cannot guarantee playback
of the video on all CD-ROM players," reads one microscopic disclaimer.

Village Idiot - "Regret but give you your money back - no way - next time take
your magnifying glass with you to the record shop."

One possible fix for the compatibility problems: Some record companies include
a piece of software with each enhanced CD to diagnose whether a CD-ROM drive
can be retrofitted right away. About half, estimates Ion's Roberts - can be
fixed immediately by adding special software.

Village Idiot - "Oh yes adding special software - if you can get your hands on
it. And lets not forget you must call (phone - ring up) the manufacture of
your CD-ROM - mine was on the west coast, I live on the east (long distance
phone call) and they put me on hold 3 times - and no I still haven't got the
correct firmware"

Beyond the technical issues, the drawbacks of enhanced CDs may be artistic and
market-oriented. For instance, in focus groups conducted by the Recording
Industry Association of America, some consumers saw multimedia elements as
"work" that might interfere with their enjoyment of the music.

That could mean that the price for enhanced CDs, while typically less than half
that of a standard $50 CD-ROM disc, might still be viewed as too high.

Village Idiot - "That and the fact you get 4 songs for $20 if you can't get
the hidden tracks to work"

"There may be some bumps in the road in the short term," said Sony's Ehrlich,
"but in the long term we think this is going to be worth the journey,"

Village Idiot - "Did he say journey - or could that have been money"

Okay, folks take this whole thing with a bit of tongue in cheek humor. I'm
sure
the CD Plus will improve with age.

Jamie

I most certainly do not agree...once you get it to work with your computer
you will be amazed!!!! there's videos, tons of photos, there's chris talking
about the recording process, there's a PONG game (though i haven't been able
to find it yet...), there's a performance vid of Artis, and at the end you
hear the guys laughing...but the best part is the Superunkown. this is like
a David Lynch film/acid trip/mind-melt/warp in the space-time continuum. you
'click' on different things and get taken on a roller coaster ride through
surreal hell. there's also NEW music, mostly incidental jams, but it's still
new. make sure that you have enuff RAM to run this thing...you defintely
need the recommended amount. btw, i use the CD+ on my brothers Power MAC.
his machine has 8 MB RAM, and it runs great.

Soundgarden is my favorite band, and unfortunately they can suck live, but
other times they're brilliant. i've seen the boys 4 times, twice they were
great, and the other 2 times, they were very disappointing. the bad times
were Lolla '92 and the show they played with NIN in Barrie (just north of
Toronto). the best shows ive seen with SG were the show they played with
pearl jam and neil young (they previewed songs from Superunknown) and on
their badmotorfinger tour during the spring of '92.
