	Ok . . . This is it!!!
I have had enough. It's 3:00am on Nov 21 and I bought Alive in the
Superunknown at 12:00 am. I stood in line at Media Play, which opened
it's doors for the Beatles and Garth Brooks releases, totally forgetting
the Soundgarden. A local D.J. who was covering the new Beatles release
asked what I was going to get: Beatles or Brooks, to which I replied
Soundgarden. Ha!! They only had ONE copy! I got it luckily, and I am
the only person in Fargo Moorhead that does. I called a thousand other
stores and no one even knew it was coming out! I got the CD+, they
didn't stock the EP. But the last laugh was on me. I have been sitting
here for the last 2 1/2 hours loading every driver possible to get the
damned thing to play. Whatta piece of shit Corel puts out. It doesn't
support shit. Next time, I hope A&M and Corel look into this. Tomorrow
I call my CD ROM Manufacturer.

Another good way is to hit the harmonic on the low E string 5th fret and the
D string 12th fret, then you can tune using the same note (rather than fifths
plus gain the advantage of using harmonics (they are easier to distinguish
because there are less 'background pitches').

Subject: PJ v SG Enough!!!

On the subject of who is better PJ or SG, i'd like to add my thoughts......
Comparing these two bands is by and large redundant, what do they really have
in common apart from the fact that they are both from Seattle and both
considered "Grunge"?. Their music, I believe is totally seperate from each
other, PJ are more like an all-American rock group, the sort that we've heard
in one form or another through the years (Journey, The Eagles etc) and SG are
a bit different, not so easy to pigeonhole, they write more far-out, demanding
to listen to music. In fact I feel comparing these two bands is like comparing
Led Zep (PJ) and Black Sabbath (SG), and lets face it they don't sound similar
at all, they are just thought of in the same breath as they were around at the
same time and both are "Rock" bands. For what its worth I think SG are the
better band but that is just IMHO, as a preference as I prefer heavier, moodier
music and PJ can be a little cloying at times (Daughter, Alive etc). As to
who are the better musicians, I don't agree that just because SG play harder,
seemingly more technical stuff that they are necessarily better musos, I bet
PJ could play any SG song if they really wanted to, just because their music
does'nt have complicated drum beats and such-like does'nt mean they could'nt
play one, just its their choice to play what they play, I also agree with
what someone said about finding it hard to learn one of PJ's songs and learning
Black Hole Sun in no time at all, Stone Gossards riffs are hard to play in
their own right, and he also uses strange tunings like Chris. Next thing you
know there will be someone comparing SG to TLC or someone just because both
happen to sing and release records, it has about as much relevance as comparing
them to Pearl Jam.

Anyone play a game by electronic arts called Road Rash? I have yet to
but from what I understand the game, on one of the new 32 bit gaming
systems, has a soundtrack by actual bands. Yes, soundgarden is one of
them, reportedly doing four songs on the game with video clips. What are
the songs, are they new? Are the video clips new?
Does anyone have the black hole sun import CD single from Germany? If
not I strongly recommend buying it. Along with BHS it has live versions
of Jesus Christ Pose, and Beyond the Wheel. Both really jam, but beyond
the wheel is the best soundgarden song of all time, and this live version
is incredible!
What is FOPP, and what is soundgarden talking about in the FOPP
song? Can anyone help?

Subject: SG like Filter?

I was browsing my AOL Q&A of SG and was surprised that they
listed Filter, along with PJ Harvey and The Presidents of
the United States of America, as bands that give them a rush
or a sense of competition. PJ Harvey is 'challenging', and
TPOTUSOA are pure silliness and originality. But Filter?
I thought they were virtually a Nine Inch Nails cover band
with a pop twist. Are they actually good?

The Tubes as a favorite during their teen years? One of
Kim's favorites I assume? Who are they? I believe Chris
preferred The Meat Puppets, Killing Joke and Alice Cooper.

I'm glad they think the crowd at the Toronto double-bill
with Nine Inch Nails was great, but the only comments I
heard after the show were "I told you SG's not a mosh" and
     "I can't believe they didn't play Outshined."

And lastly, a comment directed at Chris: Charlene at Thai
on Alki misses you and Susan? What the hell is this...a

Of course its worth buying. Sorta like a cross between old Screaming

and Doors stuff. I like it. It took a while to grow on me, but the CDs

however, get a hold of the EP. The cover is totally different from the
CD+, And it isn't even called "Alive In The Superunknown," it's "Songs
from the Superunknown." I am listening to Jerry Garcia's Finger right
now, and there is no vocals or drums in the song, just a bunch of weird
noise. It's cool. The cover has a real blurry picture of Chris on the
front. The insert is a picture of teeth with silver fillings. It costs
seven dollars. It's cool.

Why not just get a tuner and tune the sixth string at the second
fret to E, which will mean that sixth string open will be D? This
works really good for people like me who don't have an ear for

First...

I vaguely remember someone mentioning something about the SG song on the
_Screaming Life_ compilation CD. There was confusion about the name loud
love. Loud Love is the music publishing company that (i believe) controls
the rights to the song. So, the only SG song on the compilation is
"Entering". btw: I highly suggest you pick a copy of the book up for
christmas...It's really outstanding.

Well Seth, I'm on the other side of the fence. I went hunting for the
CD-plus, and only came away with the audio only disk. That'll teach me for
leaving buffalo a day early.

If you plan on buying the audio only _Songs from the Superunknown_, dont buy
it because of the song "Jerry Garcia's Finger". It's 4 minutes of
noise...nothing else. They did add a few more seconds to the beginning of
Fobd (video)..that was pretty neat...The inside photo's of a gold tooth
filling and a dental x-ray are pretty neat also..

record companies suck. Management firms suck. The band is headed in a more
image conscience direction, that's too bad..because the music can stand up
for itself. Anyone remember what Gold Mountain management said after kurt
cobains first suicide attempt? What a bunch of idiots. Didnt they think
people would eventually know the truth?

Seth you must of purposely sent this email to me because you know that It
would rile me up...!

It makes you think just HOW much MONEY! susan silver pumped into the
official web site? You know that it had to be substantial for her to act
like this. I'm surprised you havent received copyright threats yet! I've
got this strange feeling that she feels we're the enemy.

>It seems that someone affiliated with Soundgarden (Silver Management,

put the blame where it's due: susan silver. You know it was her decision.

>exercised final editing authority and made SPIN alter the

I'm more disappointed with Spin. I expect record company (management)
weasels to act like greedy pigs (or protectors). There goes spin's
integrity...right down the fucking drain. It makes you wonder if Mark Arm
really was writing about chris and the band in the song "Generation
Spokesmodel"? If you've never heard the song...I suggest you buy or borrow
a copy of Mudhoney's album _My brother the Cow_...because this incident
sounds eeriely familiar!

I hope someone writes a long nasty letter to spin! If someone does...send a
copy to me...I'd love to read it :-) Hell, I'll co-author it.

I'm totally new to this list, so please forgive me if I say anything stupid
about stuff I have missed. I guess I'll start with my most favourite place
to listen to Soundgarden. Besides super loud in a car on the highway, or
blaring when I finally roll out of bed at two o'clock on a Saturday
afternoon, my favourite, or should I say coolest, listening experience was
during one of my frosh week activities (last year). All of the frosh were
hanging around outside on this huge playing field and there were these huge
speakers so that everybody could hear. Anyway, they play Black Hole Sun and
everybody was just standing around singing and grooving away. It was really
cool, like everybody was entranced by this wave of Soundgarden. That's the
loudest I've ever heard it (never been to a concert of theirs yet, even
though I'm from Toronto) and it was just amazing to be part of so many
people being really into it all at once. Oh yeah, and listening to it during
sex is pretty great too, Chris' voice just does it to me.

I am not talking about his "voice", literally. Rather, I am making the
(albeit inanely postmodern) point that Cornell and the boys express their
masculinity in their music. I find in rock these days that male artists
either repress their masculinity or make a mockery of it. Imagine Eddie
Vedder, or Kurt Cobain for that matter, getting onstage topless. Imagine
them screaming "Fuck!" and the crowd screaming back, "you!". But Cornell
manages to do it without looking or sounding cheesy. I saw SG open for
Danzig, and the contrast between the two pec-baring styles was clear as
day. And why is that Madonna is called a "strong, independent woman" and
Paul Stanley is called a sexist pig? (How the tables have turned - in
_some_ areas, anyway).

Now look at the lyrics: "You tell me I'm low, 'cause I slept on the
floor/And out in the woods, with the badgers and wolves/And you threw me
out, 'cause I was digging for gold/And came home with a hand full of coal".
It has the "when-men-were-men" sensibility of country music, without the
cowboy boots (but _with_ the yodeling!). Vedder's "I know one day you'll
have a beautiful life/I know you'll be a star/In somebody else's sky/But
why can't it be mine?" is good, but not "manly" to my ears. It is the
difference between stars in the sky and badgers and wolves.

A silly point, I know (perhaps no point at all), but people say that men
think with their penises. I just think it is important to note that a penis
may have something intelligenrt to say.

"Jesus, I don't like my penis..." On second thought...

From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

Well, I put the new CD+ in my CD-ROM drive, and believe it or not, it
played fine, without my even having to install the Corel drivers.

That is, it played fine except for parts with sustained audio and
video at the same time, which were extremely choppy; this occurred
while exploring the audio player and the video forest, and some
portions of the Superunknown. This seems to be caused by poor CD-ROM
drive performance (and no, installing the Corel drivers didn't help)
- -- even though it is double-speed. I guess I now have a reason to
upgrade, too.

Anyway, I can't say that what I did see of the disc was very exciting.
The opening title animation is way too flashy, in stark contrast to
the mood that I perceive Soundgarden's music as inducing. The photo
jam consists of a slew of low-resolution images and some background
music -- nothing really worthwhile.

I really would have liked to have seen the animated _Badmotorfinger_
logo (the wheel). Of all of SG's discs, I think BMF looks the best
(and no, that's not really important, as Steve pointed out, because
the music stands on its own regardless of the image that the band
portrays). You may have noticed from the few graphics on the Web page
that they are constructed from pieces of _Badmotorfinger_ (the band
photo on the main page, the wheel on the discography page). When I
redo the Web page (soon, soon), it will be very much built with
fragments of the BMF look.

Sorry about going off on a tangent there.

I don't think there was really any reason to release the CD+. It's not
something I view as a "Soundgarden thing to do." It's not at all
reflective of the spirit of the band's music -- especially the audio
tracks that are included (when I hear "Like Suicide," I don't want to
see flashy purple pictures -- I want dark, I want moody).

I'm not quite sure what market they were targeting with this, and I
suspect that this is not a project that the band was particularly
enthusiastic about. It seems like a way to make some cash between
albums (not that they need it -- how many copies did _Superunknown_
sell?), and I would further suspect that it was Susan Silver's idea,
much as, I believe, the official website was her idea. The Web and
multimedia are extremely trendy right now, and these recent endeavors
seem like an attempt to milk the cash cow. Their attempts in both of
these areas are not much more than average -- had they done something
truly stunning with either, maybe it would have been worthwhile. Sure,
it seemed appropriate for Billy Idol to release _Cyberpunk_ as a
CD-ROM, but Soundgarden?

Chris said during the AOL session that they're musicians first and
foremost. I don't know about you, but I could have waited another few
months for a new studio album -- the CD+ was unnecessary.

Flame away.

Well I bought the CD-plus, got the only one at the store. Tried a few
things and it seems to work ok. The music is a little choppy sounding
though. Someone asked if they had released a new EP. I found one that I
had never seen before. It is called 'Songs From The Superunknown'. It has
5 tracks:
Superunknown-LP version 5:06
Fell on Black Days-Video version 5:26
She Likes Surprises-International LP version 3:17
Like Suicide-Acoustic version 6:11
Jerry Garcia's Finger 4:00
It was only $6.99!

I'm posting to the list a lot today, sorry about that ;) But that whole
edited transcript-America OnLine business is bothering the hell out of
me. I mean, they're LYING to us. They can't stand the fact that people
think the unofficial web page is better than the official, so they
glamored up the transcript to make it look like no one said that.. but I
know, and you know, and anyone who was there last Wednesday knows, and
anyone who has a log file of it knows that the SPINmc said that Seth's
web page is better than the official web page. And I totally agree!
Here's why whenever I do my Web browsing and it asks for a URL, I type
http://www.sgi.net/soundgarden instead of http://rocktropolis.com/soundgarden..

Because to people with Text-only browsers, the official Web site is
useless. (no text, can't download anything)
On Seth's page, you can download cool gifs of Soundgarden, and get info
on lyrics, tab, articles and bootlegs (Like the official site would have
bootlegs... But you and I know that bootlegs are cool, so I prefer
Seth's page.)
The no-text thing is a huge issue to me, since I'm running a 386sx/20
with 2mb ram, so running something like Netscape on here would be a pure
miracle. I'm stuck with Telix for my Web browsing. Anyone else? Come on,
I CAN'T be the ONLY person on the list with a shitty computer.
(I did look at both unofficial and official pages with AOL one time, on
a friend's computer.. a long time ago... and I have to say Seth's page
is a lot less confusing.)
The unofficial page has a whole hell of a lot more information, unless
the official page has something new.. Hope not, cuz I sure as hell can't
get to it.
The official page doesn't have a wonderful MAILING LIST! HA!

I dunno, when I was referring to "they" in the beginning of this dumb
letter, I don't think I was referring to Soundgarden.. hell, they're
most likely too drunk to give a rat's ass about the Web page. I'm sure
they care more about writing a good song than a lil pretty thing on the
computer. I was probably referring to Silver Management. ;) Heheh, sorry
Susan.. heheh ;) I don't know why she is so upset over something like
that. She should be PROUD that Seth is representing Soundgarden on the
internet in such a wonderful way. She should give all the money to
Seth's page, not the official one... heheheh.. ;)
Ok, I'm done ranting.. sorry to clutter up your mailbox.. anyone else?

the quality of conversation seems to have dropped off a little
over the last month or so imho. contrary to just about everyone else's
view, I didn't mind the genuine additions to the soundgarden vs. pearl
jam debate. there's a lot more guitar tab stuff now (even though it
doesn't interest me, it is cool), and of course more traffic on the cd+
thread. but I'm a little more partial to the early threads, like whether
soundgarden was pop and what the lyrics to some songs meant. we seem to
have acquired some sort of reputation as a house of flame, and I'm not
sure that it's warranted. especially if you compare us to any newsgroup
that contains a bunch of differing views.

actually, the last flame was for that guy that felt you were a
bitch list admin, wasn't it seth? :) but back to the topic. I think
that if we can all find something to talk about for another three months,
we'll have a new album to talk about :)

I do have one small request though: if you don't like a thread,
and you think that it has been going for too long or is too boring or
isn't relevant anymore and never was, don't just write in saying that. I
think that we'd all like to be as creative as possible, so throwing shit
at one topic and not offering up an alternative just seems to me to be a
waste of time. so if you don't like it (and nobody could possibly be
interested in every single post that comes through here :), then delete
it or suggest something a bit more interesting.

I read that the version on that take was way different to the
final cut because it was a *very* early demo of fobd. chris showed the
song to the band, and ben changed the bass line, giving the song an
entire different feel. I agree with you that the lyrics are cool, as is
the whole song itself. funny how only the chorus of the demo is the only
part of the song that resembles any part of the final version. I also
read that fobd was kind of an old song, and the band wouldn't have
been able to handle the 'pop' arrangement of the original demo.

very interesting to all of us, seth. looks like the editor had a
couple of soundgarden thugs/kneecap men standing around him at the final

for spin when the new album comes out? I don't think that the guys from

peripheral thing as an official web page. I mean what kind of percentage

cd+ releases and scour record catalogues for singles and exorbitant

not having seen the cd+ (unless joe forks out the dough), I can't

(with all deference to the coolest unofficial site on the web and earlier

I was refering to seth and the contributors to the web page (about 20?
people total?).

They've pumped in some money for an excellent web site...and they've been
hearing rumblings that it isnt good enough....so they are doing MAJOR damage
control. It just so happens that they are doing damage control in our
world. So most of us know what's really going on.

I read something somewhere where he said the song was written after he
"saw"? a soundgarden video, or magazine cover or something like that. It
does seem that this new image the boys are portraying does sorta (in a wierd
way) fit the song. "hey kids...how do I look on the cover of SPIN". We
will just have to see what the hype machine does with the bands new studio
album. Will they try to become the biggest band in the world with the music
or with the image.

From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

i couldn't resist putting my schoolwork off just a bit longer, so i
went over to my office (home of my scanner) and scanned some more
images for the web page. now available:

	jesus christ pose postcard (posecard?)
black hole sun single covers (us and uk versions)
	spoonman single cover
	superuninterview cover
	alive in the superunknown cover
	songs from the superunknown cover

some of my originals are kind of crappy (i think my friend used the
jesus christ posecard as a bookmark for a long time)...but such is
life.

enjoy (please).

Yeah, *we* do, but what about web newbies and others not on this list or
not on the Spin thing. Say they are huge sg fans and read the
transcript. Right then a misjustice is done by the misrepresented
statements. And if there us no mention of uh, our, page, how will people
looking to that for info find out about our wonderful mailing list? Well
i know this is not a very linear paragraph, but i'm going home tomorrow
and i can't concentrate. -j

just a couple of quick notes on the spin online conversation:

	1.  the whole thing seems to read like a big advertisment;

	2. chris and kim sidestepped the new album question very deftly.
I wonder if their answers were doctored at all before they
appeared on-screen? noone wants to know about the cd+, we
want *music*. 'what is your new album like and when does it
come out' does not mean 'tell us more about the cd+ please' :(

	3. for jamie, the crack about females came after a pretty inane
question where they were asked if they are really a big
macho/sexist bunch of so-and-so's. which means that you can
probably disregard what they said about the action figures.
	    have a read of it.

	4. while this is a cool idea, I would have preferred if they
were spending their time mastering their next record

all they have to do is read the transcript on the unofficial
page. then they will understand. seth's page is still the bigger page
of the two, and we are gonna keep it that way. just send the newbies to
the list and we'll set 'em straight :)

Subject: money grab?

so I understand that many of you have trampled/ will overcome all
obstacles to get your sweaty hands on a copy of the cd+...hmmm.
I was just wondering what sort of gimmick this is. I think I read in
today's digest that $20 is the going price for this extraordinary venture
into the "world of digital, interactive, cutting-edge,
foaming-at-the-mouth, multimedia excitement". (that was industry lingo, btw)
it occurred to me, after wiping your saliva from my monitor, that we're
all being ripped off. think about it.
how much does it cost to manufacture a plastic cd? consider the millions
used by one label, i.e. a&m. does the price you pay justify what you receive?
think about the amount of data that could be stored on a cd, especially
with compression techniques...they could put every track ever recorded
(legitamately) on this disc, some or all liner notes and photos, cooking
with chris cornell, even a short film clip of the band shitting in unison...
guitar tab...should i rant on?(probably not)
at any rate, I'm sure the enthusiasm reflected in this list also exists
in the real world (i.e. those people who do not subscribe to the list)
just imagine the change...I'm not trying to slag the band, but I think
that fans are a prime target of music industry dicks who jump on
technology as a way to make some cash. as much as everyone would like to
believe their favorite musician is an artiste, I would have to go out on
a limb and suggest that they don't tear up their paychecks...
I just think that the label, and the band, could have added much more to
this disc for a similar price if people demanded it.
I have a great love for sg and I think they're one of the most talented
and underrated bands in existence, but I don't know about this whole cd+
thing..
(hey, this is a fucking long post, I'm really sorry you were forced to
read/scroll through it. I'm off this couch..........)

No, i seriously doubt that, but to me and i hope many other people as

i'm not quite sure they could realistically put _that_ much on one
disc. with current mainstream cd-burning techniques, the maximum is
still 75 minutes of audio or 660MB of data. if they were to use the
newest technologies (i.e., blue lasers) they could cram 10 times that
amount onto a single disc, but it would probably cost a whole lot more
than $20.

i would agree, though, that they could have made an effort to include
some more useful information, such as accurate lyrics (the official
website people keep telling me that they will be adding the lyrics
soon) and guitar tabs -- perhaps soundgarden-themed accessories for
your Mac or Windows-based PC?

a soundgarden _game_, though, is enirely useless -- and a waste of
space that could have been applied to something far more
appealing...like, for example, an audio track not available anywhere
else, in place of "superunknown."

the other thing that bothers me is that the high price does not
warrant the tiny amount of effort A&M seems to be expending to promote
the CD+. i've not seen a magazine advertisement, a poster in a record
store, or anything -- except the small bit about it on the official
website and the advertising in spinonline on aol. when i went to tower
records last night to buy the disc, there were camera crews waiting
for the unveiling of the rack of beatles cds -- and not a soul in the
place had ever heard of a new soundgarden release. i finally found it
in hmv -- instead of going on a "new release" rack, it went straight
from the stockroom to the "soundgarden" section in "rock/pop." $20
sure is a high price tag for something that seems utterly unimportant
to anyone affiliated with the band and what is just "a fun teen thing
to do" to the band itself.

Jeez I dunno whether you should be so judgemental.... They are obviously
keeping her as management for a reason, she does a good job! So what if
she's married to Chris Cornell, it shouldn't be relevant. What should
matter is the music, and I severly doubt she's going to change that.
