Jamie, you must have not heard Cold Bitch yet. That would tell you that
cc can definitely handle slower songs. Oh, and if we are going to get
strange:
"Rainy Day Women Noumbers 12 and 35" by Bob Dylan (AKA-Everybody must get
stoned)
"God Save the Queen" by the Sexpistols
and for a really wierd one:
"Cut Your Hair" by Pavement (Has sg even heard of Pavement?)
Well, that's all for now, except maybe some John Coltrane song during the
time when he played w/ two drummers (Matt could handle it) or that song
"Battle on Mars" or something.

Ok, now I'll agree that both Sugar and SG are extremely cool, but I can't
agree to having Sugar open for SG. If you want to double headline them,
okay, but Bob Mould is just too much of a God (and he's got the back
catalog to prove it!) to open for anyone.

I actually am not impressed with Sugar's albums as much as I am with SG's
stuff, if you're talking about current years, but go back to Candy Apple
Grey or New Day Rising, and you need a pretty damn long pole to touch that
stuff.

I just bought Alice Cooper's CD called "The Last Temptation" to see how
his versions of the songs Stolen Prayers and Unholy War
would sound. For those of you who haven't heard these yet, they are off of
tha Stolen Prayers CD (and Supermainstream, but Stolen Prayers is the one I
own). Anyway, the lyrics in both songs are a bit different from the
versions on Stolen Prayers.
On the CD Unholy War is credited to Chris and Stolen Prayers is credited
to both Alice and Chris.
The coolest thing about this CD is that Chris sings backup vocals on the
song Stolen Prayers. Alice does a fine job singing lead vocals on the
song as well (admittedly, he's no Chris, but no one could expect him
to sing that well). Anyway, I thought I'd let you people on the list know
about this CD.

Later,
Kevin

PS. If you can find it, there's a cool Neil Gaiman comic book included
with a few of these "Last Temptation" CDs.

Seems to me its no longer the U2 mailing list but now the Faith No
More mailing list!! Suits me, FNM are one of the coolest bands ever to
strap on a guitar. Also i'm glad to see so many of you like King for
a Day....Fool for a Lifetime, I think its their best album, nearly
every song is a classic, just seems the masses did'nt think so as it
seemed to sink without a trace and the reviews (at least here in
Blighty) were lukewarm to say the least. Evidence came out over here
in the summer as a single and deserved to be in the top 10 throughout
the amazingly hot summer we had this year, instead it got to about
no35 and faded away, is there no justice??!! I saw them at Phoenix93
and they blew me away, Patton was off his head, in fact my only
problem with them live is that he tends to prat about and sing some of
the songs in silly voices, this was their last gig with big, sick,
ugly Jim Martin and he was taking the piss out of him throughout the
concert, Trey Spruance kicks Martin's ugly sick, ass on guitar anyway.
The only connection with SG I can think of is that SG opened for G n'R
in 92' and FNM went on second.

OK, it's true that it's got that carnival sound to it. But I think the=20
best covers come from a band rearranging someone else's song and totally=20
making it their own. I think Chris and crew could do it (at least you=20
agreed with the lyrical assessment, eh).

Since the SG cover suggestions are coming from every conceivable place on=
=20
the muscial map, I'm surprised no one has tried KISS yet. Maybe SG and=20
Kiss could swap some songs? Do an unplugged together (like Melissa and=20
Bruce did) if Kiss hadn't already just done one? You know, actually, I'm=
=20
sure SG must have covered a Kiss song or two at some point. Someone will=
=20
tell me it's on a bootleg somewhere.

BTW, I'm abandoning my attempt at a groovy sig file, because apparently=20
only NYU allows you to do this =B0=A4=B0=A4=B0 and get away with it.

Can I take it that you've heard the amusing "Elevator Music" version of
"Nothing Else Matters" that Metallica put on Garage Days Re-revisited?
But then "Nothing Else Matters" was almost elevator music anyway.

Still, it's worth trying to get hold of just to hear Metallica take the
piss out of one of their own songs. The orchestral backing is way OTT.

Nope, no SG stories, unfortunately. However I too will admit to having
conversations with INXS. They were fine gentlemen who loved to debate
music while getting shit faced drunk in our first class compartment.
One of them, I don't remember his name, was telling me how miserable
it was touring with PIL. He was describing how much of an ashole John
Lydon was. I could have gone and asked John myself (he was in the next
compartment) but I didn't want to be spat upon. Michael Hutchence
graced us with his presence only when it was time for pictures. They
invited us backstage at their NY show but I didn't go because I'm not
really a big fan of theirs. Joan Jett was very cool on another flight
I was working. She talked about her new movie at the time, the one
with Michael J. Fox, I don't remember the name of it. She was sitting
next to all these business men who kept giving her thesse dirty looks,
especially when she fell asleep with her legs spread wide open.
Aeosmith was probably my favorite though. My fellow flight attendant
thought they were pompous rockstars but I thought they were cool,
especially Steven Tyler and his wife. I asked him how it was with Guns
and Roses opening and he said that they were pleasantly surprised. The
guys from GNR weren't getting drunk every night and they actually
enjoyed touring together. His wife was looking forward to sort of a
second honeymoon ( they were on their way to Hawaii for a show) but
didn't know how much time they'd have alone. More fine gentlemen!!

BTW, I did notice the Spoonman in the movie. They played it when some guy

First off I want to say that it seems to be a common trend to read too
much into messages on this mailing list. I mean, did you really think I
was totally against firefighters or something? When a list subscriber

personally? How the fuck do I know who fights fires out there, it was
just a joke. You need to lighten up, get out more, get some fresh air.
I also think its funny how easy it gets for someone to shoot their mouth and
start hurtling insults at someone when they're halfway across the country.
Its easy to sit their in your comfy little desk chair and say something like
that, but I'm damn sure you wouldn't be saying it if you were sitting here

For my buddy Chicka:

Okay, I will give Cold Bitch a second listen and let you know if it can match
Nights in White Satin for slowness. But I should restate myself here.. It's
not just the slowness of the song, but Nights has a certain feel to it. I
would just like to see Chris push the envelope a little on mood. Now don't get
ugly out there I know Chris has the mood but not the "Bitch" or "Black Days"
type of mood.

And no I don't want to see him do a "Smile be Happy" piece of junk. Just a
little feeling with out the dark end of it. So, I'm a romantic - big
deal.....

First off: Thanks everyone for being so understanding about the 80's thing. I

print out your post and use it for toilet paper, because that is all it is

Yes, yes, yes. That's one helluva song. But maybe Sir Bob is the only one

make a cameo when Matt Dillan puts speakers in Bridget Fonda's car. He comes

First, I would just like to bring you all to the attention that everyone

When people say sellout I think
they mean someone who writes an intentionaly "catchy" song. In other
chris and co. are in the studio and chris says "Hey guys lets write a
repetitive song where we say the same thing about 8 thousand times."
and Kim would say "alright cut out 3/4 of the lyrics to bhs, just have
2 short verses and I'll do a bunch of silly unoriginal guitar
posturing in the middle." Ben would say "I'll pick my bass of the
floor and just wear my underpants like that flea fellow" then matt
would say "we'll all smile during the song, and Kim, don't emminate
any of that angry darkness from your guitar" In my opinion that would
be selling out, doing appearances on letterman and shit, intentionally
going out and making a song that will catch on instantly.

The way I see it, if someone copies your favourite group, it just means

Finally thank you all, I did say the other week that you had all inspired
me and last night I finished my first ever song about my hampster which
escaped a few weeks ago and got into the wall cavity of our house
(don't worry she got out again after we had a brick removed from one
of our downstairs walls). The song is called CAVITY and if you ever
see it on a CD then check the names of the band members, and tell your
friends that "he couldn't have done it without us."

Joseph A. Burnett:
Soundgarden has influences from Led Zeppelin, so, they're a bunch Led
Zeppelin wanna-bes, right? and Led Zeppelin was influenced by someone, so
Led Zeppelin is a bunch of ripoffs, right? and that guy was probably
influenced by classical musicians, and they were influenced by the Romans,
who were influenced by two cavemen banging a rock together a billion years
ago......so if any of you fools want to find an original band, then become
archaeologists or something. Cause everybody got their ideas from someone.

DanaBT@aol.com:
Last summer I took my 40 year old brother to the first concert he had been
to since seeing Peter Frampton headline a Bill Graham's Day on the Green in
the summer of 1975. You guessed it, Soundgarden. He's now a total fan.
"Jesus Christ Pose" is his favorite and he thinks Chris Cornell is
definitely the best vocalist in rock. Now he has something to really share
with his 16 year old son. Even his diehard-Neil-Diamond loving wife walks
around the house singing "I'm so ugly, that's okay 'cause so are you". She
still can't deal with Soundgarden.
The moral of this very long story is don't join them, beat them!!

Moon Druid:
However, I got a few flames from people that never post to the mailing list.
Let's put it this way, I have the guts to speak my mind, step out from
behind my keyboard, and talk about Soundgarden.
If you plan on flaming in the future, at least talk on the mailing list.
You'll make more friends that way, and you'll keep your faces from getting
smashed in the next time we see you.

Jackhammer:
OK - Such a cartoon produced by one Jackhammer would be called
SuperLouderMotorFopp and would be about a high school dropout fronting a
band including a psychology graduate who recruit a bass player and drummer
to start up a detective agency. But this is no ordinary detective agency:
these guys have street cred and no-one picks them for the detectives they
are, whilst producing incredible music as a brilliant cover! With plenty of
musical interludes (eg. car chasing scenes to the tune of Rusty Cage) and
Jesus Christ Pose in the background as they solve another mystery, this show
would become a hit!
Don't mind me! I'm sane!

Scott J. Schmidt:
I guess the ambiguity is a sign of great lyric writing - I'm sure it's a
hell of a lot harder to write a song that extremely different people can
relate to equally well. But that's what great musical artists do - they
transcend boundaries. And SG, aside from being musically unmatched (IMHO),
have that transcendent quality too. And that's why I love 'em.

Jamie:
Does this have anything to do with anything - Hell no - and I don't care,
I can't sleep and shit happens.

Scott J. Schmidt:
I'm going to try to describe this - maybe someone will know what I mean.
SG's music has a kind of "landscape" of its own. I don't really know how
else to describe it. Some music is incredibly flat, but SG's music - I
don't know if it just stimulates more neurons or what - has an atmosphere
that sets it apart. It's like the difference between B/W and color movies or
something. It just hits the right synapses, I guess. Scratches an itch
my brain didn't know it had. And, no, I'm not high.
Also, listening to SG is a more active thing than listening to, say,
Hootie & the Blowfish (no disrespect). The musical arrangements and
lyrics are a lot more challenging. I think that's why they scare away so
many top-40 types. It takes some effort to listen to em (at least at
first). But once you're there, there's no going back.

Michael T. Daul:
I like soundgarden basically for the emotion of their music.
When I'm in a mood in a serious way, be it sad, happy or whatever, SG
seems to help explode that emotion into some bigger ride, or something.
They are just so great to chill to. My favorite tune is Fell on Black
Days - I love both the musicallity and the lyricallity of it. Chris
Cornell's voice could not have found a better song to sing.

Joe Burnett:
come on, i wanna see some action out there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you're all a
bunch of slaves (and bulldozers)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! how many of you people
are alive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kate Mercier:
I have it on reasonably good authority that Courtney IS evil incarnate...
and that something smells where she dwells.

Dan Hearsch:
I agree in part with the last part of your statement concerning
soundgarden's appeal, but I also think that while they're taking the art
seriously, they're not taking themselves seriously. I think that gives
them two advantages. First, they don't rest on their laurels and
celebrate what great musicians and people they are, and second, their
music lacks a lot of pretentiousness that some bands seem to broadcast. I
also think that lyrically, they are the best band to come out in a long
time. Their lyrics hold a lot of ambiguity so that they mean many different
things to different people, but almost everyone can take them in his/her own
context, but they aren't so ambiguous as to be waffly.

Daniel Garrett:
You wanted ONE reason why we like SG?? My reason is that the music is just
so MYSTERIOUS!!!

Moon Druid:
Soundgarden did a little of that, however they added to their sound rather
than deminish it. In the eyes of many, Superunknown is NOT typical
Soundgarden.
In the eyes of many, there is no such thing as typical Soundgarden.

The reason I Like (note the capital L) Soundgarden is that they KICK ARSE!
Not just normal arse...I mean those big, flabby, bus-seat filling kind.
They kick them into orbit.
That is it in a nutshell, but I could fill your screen with reasons.
Powerful, emotive songs, intelligent lyrics (I bet if any English Lit

irony, contrast, symbolism and all that)...

{Note: Hopefully I don't violate any protocol;  this is my first post...}

I think Monster Magnet would be the perfect opener for Soundgarden. Both
bands are fabulous musically and have a similar sound (to me, Monster Magnet
is like Soundgarden on acid). I wasn't aware of the "friendship" between the
two bands, but I'm glad they seem to get along. Monster Magnet is slowly
inching up to Soundgarden as my favorite band (until the next Soundgarden
release, of course...), and to see them play together would be awesome.

As far as Monster Magnet being "too big" to open for Soundgarden, I don't
think they are. I would have thought so, too, until I realized that Monster
Magnet OPENED for Corrosion of Conformity this summer and is currently
opening for Korn in the midwest. I hadn't even heard of Korn until I heard
of this tour with Monster Magnet. In fact, I'm going to the show this
weekend in Columbus, Ohio; hopefully Monster Magnet will play a fairly long
set with some older stuff.

Anyway, sorry to get long-winded, but I really think Soundgarden/Monster
Magnet would be a jewel show. If anyone else likes Monster Magnet and knows
of any related information, let me know.

Hopefully, I haven't pissed anyone off yet.

Thanks.

This may answer your question: Ian Moore sings a song called "Muddy Jesus"
off his 2nd album called Modernday Folklore. In the refrain he sings
"Jesus crossed the Rio Grande". I'm not sure if it's the song you're
talking about. That was weird for me to see your question because Ian is
from Austin and he's one of my favorites. He's getting more and more
exposure (he was on Rockline and is on the Hempilation soundtrack, etc.).
If you want any more information on him, I know a lot. In fact I was an
extra in his video for "Barline 99". They shot the video on 11-2 and 11-6
and it should be out in a few weeks, but I don't think it will ever make it
to MTV. Sorry for the off-topic post!
