I believe the Soundgarden / Eleven connection comes from the
fact that Eleven's singer is (was?) Matt's girlfriend. I
read this last year in a concert review of a show at which
Eleven opened for SG. Eleven's singer (I think Natasha?)
also played on Black Hole Sun. I guess Matt was returning
the favor by helping out after Jack Irons unexpectedly left
     Eleven.

The Toadies rock! I saw them with Bush this past summer, and they were
absolutely incredible. I think they are one of the few bands mentioned that
are not too big to open for SG. I mean, don't get me wrong, I'd love to see
Smashing Pumpkins or Foo Fighters open for SG, but I think they're too big
(like AIC) to be opening. I guess we can always hope.

I don't understand how you can defile the rhcp and laud hole in the same
statement. I do however agree that silverchair would be a great opening
band (if they weren't already taken) and the Foo Fighters would be
incredible. What do you all think of Inflatible Soul? Rumors have it
that some of the band members are related to Chris. Everyone says they
are good, but I saw them live and was dissapointed. Definitly not a good
choice for an openning act.

On my last message, I mentioned that I saw Marilyn MAnson open for
SG. Actually, they were opening up for NIN, who in turn were opening
up for Soundgarden. I'm sure that Chris and co. had nothing to do
with MM. I hate MM as well. Still, if SG has something against
industrial bands, I wonder why both NIN and PWEI were on the same
bill. Of course, the sound problems that I mentioned SG suffering
from were a direct result of Trent Reznor blowing out the speakers
during his set. That might have something to do with SG aversion to
industrial bands. TPOTUSOA are such a lightweight novelty band, and
have no business being on the same bill as SG, I mean, can you
imagine Weezer opening for SG. Don't misunderstand me, I like the
PResidents and Weezer, they're just not even close to the musical,
lyrical, and sonic complexity that is SG. As far as Silverchair
goes, they're better off with the RHCP than they would be with SG.
AIC will be disbanding after this next album, so I'm sure they don't
want to spend their final tour as an opening act. They Tea Party are
awesome, and I think would be a good opening act since they would
treat the audience to a diverse and different style of music. ANd as
long as we're talking about Canadian bands, how about GLueleg?

Subject: Bands that should open for SG

Theres been a lot of suggestions about opening acts for SG so Ill try to
throw in my 2 cents worth.
You can go two opposite directions in choosing an opening act:
1. A band even darker or heavier than SG. A band so sombre that SG will be
seen as the light at the end of the tunnel.
AIC falls into this category, and probably they could do a good job here in
Europe where they arent as popular as in the US. White Zombie also goes
here, but I, too, saw them open for SG here in Europe this autumn and
frankly it didnt work. Their music and demeanour is too cartoon-like and too
designer-black gothic to go well with SG. Sure, theyre powerful but theyre
also very close to parody. NIN would brilliant but I doubt Mr Reznor would
be interested. My vote would go to irish group Therapy who are heavy but
still maintain a good sense for a song.
2. OTOH, you could go with something lighter and more entertaining too keep
the folks awake while waiting for the main attraction. As suggested, Ash
would fall into this category but to me theyre not rocknroll
enough.Skate-punkers Pennywise would be my choice. Fast yet filling, if you
know what I mean...Overall I feel that a band that opens for SG should be a
bit lighter than SG themselves. Makes for a good contrast.

BTW, a forthcoming movie with Keanu Reeves and Carmen Diaz that premiers in
February in the US will have the title "Feeling Minnesota".../Haakan

OPENERS FOR NEXT TOUR:
Well, I wouldn't mind seeing Monster Magnet open. I realize a few of you aren't
fans, but them and Soundgarden are good friends (they put on a show in Texas
together). Matt is even wearing a Monster Magnet shirt in Motorvision. I
personally like them. Maybe Paw could open or the Supersuckers.... you get the
idea. I think Soundgarden has a tendency to use lesser known bands as openers
anyway.

well, I'm going to see Marilyn Manson the 11th at the Ritz in Raleigh, NC.
should be a great show. I also saw them last May at the Cat's Cradle in Chapel
Hill. Clutch is opening.

And then, I'm going to see Les and company (Primus) at Lawrence Joel Coliseum
in Wiston-Salem on the 29th of November.

So this will be a good month for me... new AiC and new Soundgarden

later,

If I'm not mistaken, Chris also took some Piano lessons. (When he was also
taking Guitar lessons)

I believe I read this either in RS with Soundgarden on the cover, or Dave
Letterman. The latter issue had an interview/report on Chris.

sponge is opening for soundgarden in europe, why shouldn't they continue
to do so in the future? not like they're taking off in huge ways
themselves. they don't even get that much radio play here in their home
town. i definitely think the presidents would be sweet, especially
considering kim thail plays on the last song of their album. i sense a
pattern...

Having only heard "Lump" by the Presidents of the USA, I really
can't say. Based on that single, I don't really agree. In my opinion,
they're a little too..."popy". (I guess what I'm trying to say is, they
don't match in intensity) As much as I like the song "Lump", they don't
seem appropriate.

I've got a copy...but that's the thing, it's a copy. I got it off a friend
of mine, who now resides in Sarnia, ON. I'm not willing to give up my
precious, illegal copy to you guys. (and I don't have a two cassette STero,
so I can't give you a copy of my copy.) My sincere apologies.

i wouldn't say i know them, as in i hang out with them or if you asked
them about me they'd say "oh yeah, dan rules" or anything like that, but
i ahve met them on a few occasions. i have a friend who works for esi,
the local security company for all the venues around here, and he has
gotten me backstage for a bunch of different concerts. i went to the
clubs with the tea party one time in canada and one time in detroit. they
were pretty cool. some of the others i got to meet: alice in chains,
silverchair, red hot chili peppers (anthony's half-sister lives across
the street from me here on campus), the verve pipe, goober and the peas
(went to high school with nick palance, their current drummer),
reigndance (you remember andre, from the first year of mtv's the real
world? he went to my high school, i dated his sister in jr. high school).
after that, all the bands i know get really lame. i do know jack
kevorkian too, although he's not very musical.

and my home town is the place of the original post office shooting. yes!

I've gotten to meet a few of my favorite musicians, and the experiences
were all pretty different. I got the autographs of 3 of the guys from
Soundgarden last summer in Dallas. I just waited by their tour bus after
the show - for HOURS. (I wonder how people get backstage passes! Does
anyone know?) First Matt came out and he was nice and talked to everyone a
little and even let me take a picture with him. Then Ben came out and for
some reason no one stopped him. I said "hi" as he walked by and he said
"hi" and walked on the bus. A minute later he came out with a guitar and
sat on a curb a few yards away and played. My friend and I walked over
there and Ben let us take a picture of him and then he and my friend talked
about guitars. After and hour or so more, Chris finally came out
sandwiched between two big mean guys. The guys told us to go away and to
stop taking pictures, but then Chris turned around and held out his hand
and people started handing him things to sign. I was completely speechless
because it was the first time I had ever seen someone "famous" and SG had
been my favorite band for three years. He gave me his autograph and all I
could say was thank you. Chris didn't utter one word to any of us that
night. That was wierd. I guess he was tired and had gotten his fill of
fans backstage. I guess the novelty and excitement of having fans would
wear off for any band that has been playing for so many years. Kim came out
a little later and didn't look at or speak to anyone, so I didn't get his
autograph. Does anyone else have SG encounters they could write about???

*********The rest of my message has nothing to do with Soundgarden, so if
you're not interested, stop here!!!***************

I don't know if y'all have heard of Ian Moore but he's from my town,
Austin, and I like him a lot and have had some good experiences talking to
him. Sometimes the guys from his band will hang out at some local clubs -
I'm friends with the bass player from his band now. So that's cool, it's
like a friendly support of local music.
I also have gotten to talk to Jeff Buckley before. He's a little
intimidating because of his talent (OK, and good looks :>) but he was
pretty nice. I gave him an e.e.cummings poem and he really seemed like he
appreciated the gesture. He's also pretty cool about giving autographs.
The coolest person I've ever really met was Chris Whitley. I think he's
a genius - y'all should check out Din of Ecstasy (his first album is also
great but is more like straight blues). He played in Austin for 3 nights
and my friend and I saw him the first night and got an idea for what to
give him on the second night. Chris liked our gift so much that he put us
on his guest list for the final night and hung out with us the last two
nights. It was really cool because he talked to only me and my friend. We
had cool conversations that almost made me forget who I was talking to,
until Chris told my friend he reminded him of his "good friend Jerry
Cantrell." Anyway, on the last night he gave us his home phone number.
That was cool. He didn't act like a stuck up rock star at all. Not that
he's the most popular musician in the world, but I know some obscure local
bands that have way more attitude than Chris Whitley.

Those are my boring stories. Anyone care to share theirs?

krissy

I beleive so. I'll re-read the RS with Soundgarden on the cover, and check
for it. If it's not there, it's in the issue with Letterman. (Which I can
soon check)
I wasn't too suprised about the guitar lessons. It's the piano lessons
which caught me by suprise.
