For the oldies on this list - their best stuff was even BEFORE Live Under A
Blood Red Sky, Moon! Like War, Boy, October..............anyone else got

particular are excellent. But then, I don't mind U2's later albums either,

Isn't that why we love Soundgarden? They are not typical.

Subject: Soundgarden, Soundgarden ... and a little U2.

In response to Dan Hearsch's comments on, well, how great Soundgarden
are, I think it holds a very biased view. As far as Soundgarden's lack
of pretentiousness, I think music is pretentious, if you want to label
one band you're going to have to label them all, they all hide behind an
image, usually the one you pick up on music videos and interviews. I
agree lyrically they are good, but definately not the best, one of
maybe, but you can't judge lyrics, and what do you achieve from doing
so? As for being cool individuals, I've not met Soundgarden so I'm not
one to comment, and to go off an interview, well that's as pretentious
 as it gets.

"Spoonman doesn't really HAVE a meaning", Well, I've always considered
it to be drug song, focusing on the surrealness that they create. I
don't know if that's right but it makes sense if you read the lyrics.

I also own all the early U2 records, from War, up to Rattle and Hum.
From there it drifts away from my tastes somewhat. I don't think
they're selling out, just reaching the bigger audience, which
unfortunately sounds somewhat mainstream, but then again if you like it,
 that fair enough.

Swallow MY Pride

She looked at me with dignity
She said it's something you got to see
Even though this country is headed for war
This nation is prouder than ever before
Yeah that was spirit in the end
We're more american than anyone
And I just smile cause Icould tell
This little girl is going to..

now I wouldn't mind
If you swallowed my pride
Yeah make me feel alright
Yeah now deep inside
Feel alright

Hey I alone in her heart
Couldn't keep myself from running cold
Cause I fell for her looks
Now I wanna go for her throne
I try to tell her all the time
But little girl don't understand

Now I woldn't mind
If you swallow my pride
Yeah make me feel alright
Yeah now deep inside
Feel alright

I fight
You can swallow my pride
Now I wouldn't mind
If you swallowed my pride
Yeah make me feel alright deep inside
Feel alright pride..pride
You can swallow my pride

Well, I never heard of that although it may be true. I do know, however,
that they once played Outshined and it is on a bootleg. Oh yeah, I also
heard that their version does not do justice to the song.

P.J. sort-of played a version of Outshined in an unplugged bootleg or
something (a friend of mine has it). But it isn't the whole song, they're
just f#%%^ around and Eddie sings that VERY bad. I think that Jeff starts
playing like only the first 4 notes of the first riff and then the guitar
joins in and Eddie starts singing like he had a dildo. So I'd have to say
they really aren't plaing it, they just jacked-off in their break. C-YA!

Never fear it's a Soundgarden related item not another band. I was just
wondering in the places that we have represented here. What kind of radio
stations play Soundgarden??? Or do alot of people only get their exposure to
music through MTV? Here in Chicago we have 3 stations that have played
Soundgarden. The rock alternative station(I question the alternative since
they play the "hot hits" in heavy rotation) The straight rock station(which
will play the Who etc. also) And than the "we play anything in no particular
order" station. (They will also have the Grateful Dead hour and so on) For a
long time we also had a heavy duty ear bleeding station that played
Soundgarden years ago but they are no more. And the college radio stations
are good for a tune or two also. Does Soundgarden get much airplay in your
area?

In New York it is basically the same thing. The top 40 station plays
some soundgarden(Spoonman, FOBD, and BHS). The Hard Rock station, my
personal favorite(Q-104.3) plays Soungarden along with a lot of other
good bands. This station plays a lot of different Soundgarden songs,
hence the fact they are my favorite station. Also, the alternative
station here(WDRE) plays some soundgarden. More than the top 40, but not
as much as the hard rock station. There are other rock stations that
play soundgarden once every 10 weeks, but I dont count them for that reason.
Later.

Someone asked for recommendations of up-tempo SG songs that don't involve
a lot of vocal trickery - something their lead singer could sing.

How about "Kickstand"? True, it's not very indicative of SG's style, but
it's a fun little ditty nonetheless.

Well, back home 96X (96.1 wrox; norfolk, newport news, hampton) played
soundgarden a lot. They were the first to play black hole sun. They
also played fobd first. And they are the only station that i've heard
around there play tdittl. I've heard a couple classic rock stations play
"my wave" and "outshined" My brother said he once heard "Fopp" on 98.7
(wnor, norfolk, newport news, hampton) which is a classic rock station
basically. I have heard tdittl played on another station, 104.1 out of
Richmond, Virginia. That station is almost as cool as 96X. All you
listites in Southeastern Va. who still have 96X to listen to, i'm
jealous. And i have not heard a radio station on campus play a
soundgarden song yet. Probably because all the radio stations here suck,
and therefore i rarely listen to them. Wierd, the local bands kick so
much ass, yet we don't have a decent radio station. Oh well. -j

No, it's a good thing you posted details, because someone should get
on Sub Pop's ass about this. "Entering" is most certainly not on the
_Loud Love_ EP. You would think the label would know that the song
came from one of its own EPs (_Screaming Life_).

I've seen two versions of the Outshined video. The only thing I
remember that is different about the two is that one has the lead singer
of the Spin Doctors walking around in a giant hampster wheel in one and
not in the other. I've also seen about 3-4 different versions of Black
Hole Sun between MTV, MTV International, and Much Music. The MTV
version is tame and the Much Music one has some weird stuff that they
seemed to edit out of the MTVersion. Kind of like what they did to the
Jeremy video. The Much Music version shows "Jeremy" putting the gun in
his mouth.

Okay, Matthew. It IS the Soundgarden mailing list. But please remember a
mailing list usually consists of conversations. Haven't you ever had a
conversation that starts on one topic and ends with a totally different one?
If I remember correctly, the U2 conversation began with
Soundgarden........drifted to punk.......then to early U2 music - with lots
of other threads inbetween. Surely there's no harm in this. I personally
find it rather interesting.

Feel free to join in any conversation that takes your fancy! In fact, why
not try & take a tangent of any conversation from this list and twist it
back to being Soundgarden related? Could be kinda fun.............

Down here in the country, where I live in Australia, is a local commercial
"crap" top-40 type station, two reasonably good local community-based
stations that play a wide variety of music, including some Soundgarden
songs, but I listen to Triple J, which is an Australia-wide non-commercial
station. They play non-top-40 stuff (alternative?), including some
Soundgarden - maybe not as much as they could. I like this station,
however, particularly because they give a lot of airplay to new,
up-and-coming Australian bands that would probably otherwise only be known
to the few people who go to their small live shows. Like Silverchair - it
was Triple J who gave them the start they needed to get where they are now.

[alright, I'm ducking the blows some of you want to send me for even
THINKING of mentioning Silverchair again.............!!]

And as you might remember, I don't get MTV here. So exposure to music for
me comes either from the radio, or friends. {it was a friend who first got
me into Soundgarden - you know who I mean, Jamesetta!}.

carefully they select the order of songs for CDs and sculpt
the set lists for live performances to maximize 'flow'. The
songs become painfully disjointed in a radio format and it
     makes me feel awkward.

Subject: Question

This is my first post to the list, since I haven't been a member all
that long, but I just wanted to ask a question of the other members.
I'm also on the Alice in Chains mailing list, and there's an ongoing
question over there: If you had to choose your three favorite AIC
songs, at gunpoint, what would they be?
So, if you had to choose your three favorite SG songs, at gunpoint,
what would they be?
Here are mine:
1. Outshined- The first SG song I ever heard. It got me into them,
plus it just plain kicks ass.
2. Jesus Christ Pose- The lyrics have a very personal meaning for
me.
3. Let Me Drown- No particular reason, I just love it.
Later.

Um, if the book said that exactly, are you sure that it wasn't saying
that the songs "entering" and the song "loud love" would be on the cd? -j

     My Dearest Carolyn,
I appreciate you voicing your opinon about my ill-recieved comment.
In fact, I was just thinking about the importance of opinions the other
day while working in my garden. Unfortunately, an annoying sound from a
passing plane broke my train of thought. After that I could only think
of that Sound while working in my Garden. How is that for a twist?

In the book, All You Need To Know About The Internet in the glossary under
"Flame" it says:

An abusive or personal attack agaainst the poster of a message. A flame is the
online equivalent of losing your rag or thumping your teapot.

Soundgarden:

1) Somewhere - touched my romantic side
2) Rusty Cage - sets my soul free
3) Fell on Black Days - could be my way of life - if I would let it

AIC:

1) Man in a Box - first song to take me in
2) Love, Hate, Love - first song to convert me
3) Nutshell and/or Rotten Apples - because someone special really likes them

1)Outshined- Crucial Dropped-D Crunch. SG at their best.

2)Face Pollution- Crazy Lyrics

3)Head Down- It may be off the beaten path, but the melody and beat are
  killer.

Hopefully I will never be looking down the barrel of a gun when asked
that question.

I'll have to get back to you on the AIC tunes.

My Dearest Matthew,
I'd say that is a very good twist. Almost like that twisted fork (no one's
responded to the question someone asked about the meaning behind CC's
twisted fork - does no one know??). And I have to wonder: did the passing
plane you heard in your garden sound like a Wreck that was Going Down? Oh,
your comment wasn't ill-received (not by me, anyway) - but I just felt like
responding to it. I'm glad to see you took my response with a cool, laid
back kind of attitude...............

Seems unlikely that a Sub Pop book (and the CD that accompanies it)
would feature a song from one of Soundgarden's A&M releases.

Subject: Radio Head

The media in Mexico, is dedicated to the masses who like mostly tropical, salsa. There are several news stations and also a few classicals. We have four major stations broadcasting music (excluding oldies stations) in English:

Alfa 91.3
=======
Just shitty yuppie music
W-FM 96.9
========
Also this kind of crap but also some good thing. This station plays SG when a song hits the top [10-40]
Radioactivo 98.5 URL: http://radioactivo.web.com.mx
============
They play all sorts of music. Mostly shit but also some SG (when hits).
Rock 101 (ciento uno)
=======
This is the best station for alternative/heavy/et cetera. Although much of the alternative coverage means hours of PJ, they do play a lot of Soundgarden.

I forgot who originally posted the question, but this is my idea:

Tell your singer to keep on practice. Anyone's voice can be
softened to reach a couple of notes higher. The problem with this is
that his/her voice might not last for all the show. If suddenly the
singer can reach those sky high notes, tell him to improvise and sing
those an octave lower. Many singers use this in cases of emergency.
Even opera singers have to improvise to recover from a crack in their
voice sometimes.

My votes for this category would have to be:

1. Like Suicide - it simply blows me away every time I listen to it, even
after the 500 or so times I've heard it
2. Slaves and Buldozers - I love the lyrics and the way Chris' voice jumps
up and down like the NBA (good analogy, yes?)
3. tie: Searching With My Good Eye Closed / Fresh Tendrils - it seems
that nobody wants to talk about Fresh Tendrils. Well I love
it. And I have to give credit where credit's due on the
		guitar riffs in Searching...

These are my votes for now (allow slight variations for possible mood swings)
