Subject: Question for all plus song that roped me in to Soundgarden

Well, Black Hole Sun always generates much talk, so I'm not going to stop
it! It is the song that got me right back into Soundgarden (I was sorta
interested back in the times of Louder than Love, but that was because my
sister had it playing constantly in her room.) The song that bothered me
then about Louder Than Love was Big Dumb Sex - if my parents would've heard
me play that when I was around twelve, they would've skinned me alive! So it
was more a case of "I NOT GUNNA... PLAY, PLAY, PLAY, PLAY YOU!"

My question is - does anyone know if the members of Soundgarden actually
like Black Hole Sun themselves? In fact, here is my more general question
that some people might know the answer to if they've read some articles...

Which songs do Soundgarden themselves like? Which songs do they tend to play
frequently at concerts?

and the flipside...

Which songs do SG hate/dislike? Which songs do they avoid playing at
concerts - ie. are there any songs from albums that are never played live?

This doesn't have to be limited to the band as a whole - I'm interested in
all opinions from each band member!

I just ask because all bands have their own most liked songs and their own
most hated - SG would surely be no exception! Even though the band creates
the song, sometimes they think in hindsight that they created a monster...

All opinions welcome!

Jackhammer

Good call!

Could I just suggest that people don't bag others because they don't like
particular songs? Better to give reasons why you like/dislike songs and
respect other people's opinions!

BTW, do I get any pay for this advertising? [Ducking frypan thrown in my

The lyrics for She Likes Surprises are:

_____ dress and making a mess
She makes up her hair for the 90's
_____ shoes and hiding her blues
She's dying to lose what she's finding

So Edith will leave it or take it in stride
So Edith will breathe when she's faking her smile
She likes surprises, she likes surprises
     Anything in colorful disguises

Lips and thighs abused by her eyes
Acting surprised that she likes it
     Chocolate cream, an amphetamine
Torn at the seams, she's crying

So Edith will leave it or take it in stride
So Edith will read when she's faking her smile
She likes surprises, she likes surprises
     Anyting in colorful disguises

Don't know what the underscored words are - maybe I'll check the lyrics
sheet when I get home!

Hope these are of some use!

Hey! Somebody posted the lyrics to "Stolen Prayer" while I was working on
them. Vikki!

Actually it was great. I used a lot of your transcription here, in places
where mine was really screwed. Which was quite a few places. Anyway, here
is my largely plagiarized version. People with good ears please chime in.

Just to be honest, plagiarized lines have a "<<" Lines where my hearing
differs from Vikki's have a "<" (Not too many)

      _Stolen Prayer_(from "Songs for Ozzy")

      I walk the streets alone
      Shadows on my face
My sins are etched in stone
      Never to erase
      My fear's unshakable
      If I could believe
I'd trade these wings of gold
      For what I really need

      I walk the fire alone<<
      Burnt into my soul
Scarred from the flames of woe<
My mask is made of stone
      I'm not invincible
      But I want to believe<
      That your're convincible
I pray that you will be

Take the word and pass it on
      I'm tired of preaching
Take the angel from the thorns<<
I'm tired of wings of gold<<
'Till I'm in the right of way<<
All my words are spoken (3X)
      In a stolen prayer

      I dream of different times<<
When I could find my way<<
      Through all the darkest nights<<
      That cloud my world today<<
      I'm not unbreakable
      Although I might pretend
      Its not unthinkable
      That I could feel again

Take the word and pass it on
      I'm tired of preaching
Take the angel from the thorns<<
      I'm tired of golden wings<<
'Till I'm in the right of way<<
All my words are spoken (3X)
      In a stolen prayer (2X)

I steal another minute from my life<<
      I steal a _______________________ <**
      Yeah
I steal another breath from the air, ooh

'Cause all my words are spoken
      All my words are spoken

Take the word and pass it on
      I'm tired of preaching
Take the angel from the thorns<<
      I'm tired of golden wings<<
Till i'm in the right of way<<
All my words are spoken (3X)
      In a stolen prayer

So take the word and pass it on
      I'm tired of preaching
Take the angel from the thorns<<
      I'm tired of golden wings<<
Till I'm in the right of way<<
All my words are spoken (5X)
      In my stolen prayer
      In a stolen prayer

That line in the middle obviously calls for some debate. I'm pretty sure
it's "I steal...(something)" and not "I cut a little deeper..." I keep
hearing "I steal a load of gold to form my lie" but for some reason I doubt
that's it.

This is a great song. Chris really puts on the Oz...it's like...uh...I
guess you have to hear it.

Speaking of great songs with that unmistakable Ozzy flavor:

       _Heartfist_(from "Songs for Ozzy")

Love me to death, 'cause I need the sleep
        I've been wide awake
She hit me with a hand of broken nails
It hurts to give when my heart has had too much to take
        Another blow, another broken spell

And then it hits so hard
And then it hits so hard
And then it hits so hard
And then it hits so hard

        Heartfist
Landed to the head, and hurts too bad
You got me on the ground
Heart of love why do you feel so cold?
        Oh yeah
It beats so hard into my chest
I (got my feet?) against the ground
You gotta' bite the hand that feeds you

        Alright,
I'm going down, so I'll put up a fight
        It's gonna hit me
        It's gonna hit me
        Heartfist
(Don't need another bomb to blow my head?)
        It's gonna hit me
        Yeah, it's gonna hit me

        Heartfist
You love me, hit me when I'm down,
And then you suck me up again
Looks like another good night for a bad dream

Love me to death, 'cause I need the sleep
        I've been wide awake
She hit me with a hand of broken nails
It hurts to give when my heart has had too much to take
And you know how to hit it

        Heart! Fist! Heart! Fist! Heart...

        Heartfist
_________________ (um, someone else will have to
        _________________ figure this part out)
Heart of love why do you feel so cold?
        Oh yeah
You lower me to your bed of nails
And then you hit me when I'm down
You gotta bite the hand that feeds you

        Alright,
I'm going down so I'll put up a fight
        It's gonna hit me
        Ooh, it's gonna hit me
        Heartfist
(Don't need another bomb to blow my head)?
        It's gonna hit me
        Yeah, it's gonna hit me
        Heartfist
You love me, hit me when I'm down
And then you suck me up again
Looks like another good night for a bad dream

Love me to death 'cause I need the sleep
        I've been wide awake
She hit me with a hand of broken nails
It hurts to give when my heart has had too much to take
And you know how to hit it

        Heart! Fist! Heart! Fist! Heart...

I feel the beat that brings me to the ground
I feel another fist begin to pound
(Bring everything you love into submission)?
Goes off and hits you like a heart condition

Love me to death 'cause I need the sleep
        I've been wide awake
She hit me with a hand of broken nails
It hurts to give when my heart has had too much to take
And you know how to hit it

Heart! Fist! Heart! Fist! Heart! Fist! Heart...(fades)

When it all adds up, you don't mean that much to me
Just another kiss (to hit?) me when I'm down
And then it hits so hard
        Yeah, it hits so hard

Well, I hope I haven't pissed too many people off with this absurdly long post.

P.S. Next up, "Unholy War," "Missing," and "Angel on Fire." Maybe.

Now, I've been taking a lot of flak for dissing "Mind Riot." And to some
extent it may be deserved. Let me just clarify: it is my least favorite
Soundgarden song. The word "Soundgarden" is just as important a part of
that sentence as the words "least favorite."

But quintessential Soundgarden? Has anyone heard "Beyond the Wheel" or "4th
of July"? Does the word "Gun" ring a bell? The patron organ of Soundgarden
is the testes not the lachrymal gland. And _that's_ all there is to it.(heh
heh heh)

Well looking at the web page one day I noticed that some of the
lyrics to at least one soundgarden song is totally missing and many of
the others are incomplete and yet others seem to me to have slight
mistakes. I have been working on this proplem for myself mainly by
listening to my soundgarden cds and tapes over and over again.(not
much of a chore for me I must admit.) Anyway I have filled in many of
the lyrics but not all. So if anyone wants me to post some Lyrics to any
of the four main albums and/or Screaming life/Fopp I will happily
post.

Here is my take on "I'm looking California, and feeling Minnesota" :

I think he's saying that on the outside, he seems to be like California;
bright, sunny, happy, playful. But really, on the inside, he is like
Minnesota; cold, sad, forgotten.

Subject: Opinions on this and that

Helllo everyone,

I=B4ve recently subscribed to this list. I now thought I=B4d introduce=
 myself by=20
bringing my scant knowledge to the forefront of this group with a couple of=
=20
views on recent subjects.

INTRO TO SG - Like som others, "Outshined" was the first song to bring SG to=
=20
my attention. At the time I was doing music programming for a radio show and=
=20
quickly put "Outshined" and later "Girl u like" on regular rotation.=20
SG VIDEOS - IMO every video except "Spoonman" is awful. But then, I think=20
music videos are mostly the devils work. The reason "Spoonman" works for me=
=20
I think, is the fact that music and images are contradicting each other and=
=20
therefore create a tension. Any opinions out there ??
SPOONMAN - Then again my opinion on the video could be blurred by the fact=
=20
that I think "Spoonman" as a song is awesome. Great rhythm, great vocal and=
=20
even positive !
KURT COBAIN - Not SG-related but hasn=B4t anyone noticed that these things=
=20
(murder-theory) always happen with celebrity deaths. ex. Elvis alive. The=20
guy shot himself because he was clinically depressed. Tragic, but life for=
=20
the rest of us goes on.
96 ALBUM - In a swedish newspaper interview Chris Cornell said a new album=
=20
(not ALIVE IN THE SUPERUNKNOWN) was being recorded in a studio just across=
=20
the street from his house. The band is producing it themselves.
Chris voiced disgust at the fact that he on "Superunknown" spent three days=
=20
to record one guitar part for one song. SG were now striving for the=20
forthcoming album to be more straightforward and raw.
When time permits I=B4ll translate the whole thing for the home page...
FINALLY - Does anyone else but me feel that the attraction of SG lies in=20
them being more mature than their young colleagues of the grunge scene ?=20
From my POV they seem to be taking their art rather seriously and that their=
=20
recent toning down of presence while playing live is simply an extension of=
=20
their ambition to be in for the long haul in the music biz. Especially now=
=20
that they=B4ve broadened their fan base it looks to me like they=B4re trying=
=20
even harder to concentrate on the music, so as to keep their integrity. Any=
=20
opinions out there ?

Ooopss, sorry to be so tediously long

Haakan          =20
