Subject: Soundgarden Soundgarden Soundgarden, and Soundgarden.

I see the subject has changed from bands ripping off bands to bands
ripping off songs. I can't deny the latest statement really impresses
me, the U2/Soundgarden debate. I think when you look SO close into a
song you'll find similarity, it's inevitable. In fact, the other day
I noticed, purely by chance, that the finishing riff in "SuperUnknown"
sounds almost identical to the end credits in this really dodgy 80's TV
series called "The Equalizer", but that's musical integrity for you.
As for whether I agree, I couldn't care less, I like both.

I'd like to know how you categorise someone as a "non fan" (the words of
LaMONT) or for that matter, a fan. How much do you have to like
something before you can be labelled a fan. or how little before you
 become a non fan?

I also agree with Carolyn, I think music videos CAN cloud judgement.
Many bands do this, including Soundgarden, it's a comercial move to
sell more records, and many people fall for it. The only Soundgarden
videos I've seen are "Jesus Christ Pose" and a few seconds from "Black
Hole Sun". With video, the music is irrelevant, it just amasses as
visual effects, and portrayed by it's medium as something acceptable.
For example, the increase in Soundgarden's popularity from "Black Hole
Sun", as oppossed to anything before it.

Having subscribed to a couple of music groups for the past
year, I would have to say that this is my faveorite post
by far. I can't blame the people who want to unsubscribe
(get the address right tho) because if you don't read teh
posts, all you see is 40 or 50 postings on your mail address.
Anyway, the writing is the strongest part of this
post, I think. Too many other posts just focus on BS
topics like B-sides and collective rareties. For those who
collect them, that's cool, I imagine myself wanting to buy
a couple of SG rarities when I have the cash. But I think
you also need feedback, like why did you get in to Soundgarden
or what was your favorite experience with a certain album.
I had better words to express this posting, but its 8:15
am and I have class in 15 minutes, so my thinking is muttled.

I think the only other singers in the world who could or did sound like CC
are David Coverdale & Robert Plant. Ol' Panty has pretty much lost his now
and Coverdale may have a good voice but it was wasted in all the shit bands
he's been in (Purple, Whitesnake etc). Its on Outshined where CC sounds most

Which night was this? The other day I bought the bootleg "Live at the

the same night that OJ made a run for the border on national TV, and

I do. There are some biggots on the list (like BdMtrFngr) who feel that
nothing is worth their time to read unless they don't already know it and
it's about SG. I disagree with this. I'm here for pleasure, not business.

how to write that????

2) As per someone's request: the first SG song I heard that got me into
Soundgarden (I mean REALLY into SG), had to be Outshined. Because that's
when I first associated the name with the (FACE!:-) and the sound. Yes,
even though I've scoffed inthe past at BlackHoleSun MTV converts, I guess
I'm just some sort of a primordial precursor to them. Ahem.

3) Also, as far as location goes, I am at Humboldt State University in
Northern California. Which means that I have to go to the Bay Area or to
Sacramento to see shows. And that's a long drive, believe you me.
Where is everyone else at?

4) also: Carolyn... about the Kurt Cobain thing... never say never.
Just because someone hasn't been arrested for a "murder" that may or may
not have happened, doesn't exclude that as a possiblity. I have it on
reasonably good authority that Courtney IS evil incarnate... and that
something smells where she dwells.

never really studied the words for it, mostly just singing along. i finally
took some time and looked at em, and it kinda disturbed me. well, not really
disturb, but at least a double take. chris sings about being very depressed, as
in the phrase I got up feeling so down, i got up feeling sold out. then later
on in the song he says I'm looking california, and feeling minnesota. this part
i couldn't really understand. is he saying that he knows he looks good on the

Yeah, it's a book that an early Seattle scene photgrapher has put
together. It includes early photos of pretty much all of the up and

includes a CD with stuff by lots of early artists, including Soundgarden.
Probably all previously released stuff, though.

Well, personally, I think that melodic litttle guitar thing at the

it from Motley Crue or something, but SG is above that. Otherwise, it's

I like you, too (heh, heh, heh). Seriously though, Seth, when you get over
the trauma of nearly having lost it, you should adorn the Best Band Page on
the Web with those obscure bootleg lyrics. Soundgarden will probably sue
you for publishing unauthorized material -- but then you might get to meet
them in court.

A few points/questions to throw out there:

Does anyone know for sure whether CC plays all the instruments in "Songs
for Ozzy"? It certainly sounds like a part-time drummer. I've read that he
plays all the music on the Temple of the Dog demos.

Has anyone else noticed the Godzilla samples in "Fopp"? It's the best thing
about the recording. (I used to be a huge Godzilla fan).

Mailman is, in the words of the author, "a song about killing your fucking
boss." Or it could be about the disgruntled postal worker in all of us.
(Personally, I'm gruntled).

The video for "BHS" is the worst moment in the band's history. (Not the
song, mind you, that would be "Mind Riot") Did anyone else notive that
little Eddie Vedder face CC makes when he sings "no one sings like you
anymore"? Creepy.

going to kick him out but they didn't want to hurt his feelings. He left
anyway. Then Chris Cornell called him and asked him to join them but was only
with them for a few months. Jason said "Each band is a weird, twisted family,
I think I was the retarded stepchild twice removed." It also says that he
went on to play guitar in a band called Mindfunk. Has anybody ever heard of
that band?

Okay Daniel, you just walked on my bad side. As the list holds their breath,
Jamie is going to flame - Naaaaa, you all know better than that. But, Daniel I
love Deep Purple - early Deep Purple before Coverdale - well I did like the
Come Taste the Band record (Coverdale and Tommy Bolin) For those of you who
don't know who Tommy Bolin was - he "was" (he did a Jimi Hendix) one of the
best guitar players in the late 70's early 80's (I may be wrong on the dates -
but who cares) just check out any of the Zypher albums.

Back to the issue - DP did not have allot of big hits, the only hit most people
know is Smoke on the Water. But, did you every hear of the Butterfly Ball, or
Wizards - how about Sarabanda. Have you ever heard any of the Captain Beyond
records? Okay I'll come out of the past. Wait one more did you ever go to a
DP concert and see Glover, Blackmore, Gillan, Lord (the true DP line up) play.
Did you know that Blackmore studied classical guitar - he just didn't know
cords and riffs, he had a total knowledge of the instrument.

It was bands like Deep Purple and Led Zep that open the doors to the music you
like today. Yes, Yes, I know there were a few others, (Stones and such) but
these bands were the turning point for heavy/blues/jass base music that we know
and love today.

I didn't mean to rattle on. Just let the old bands slowly fade away - don't
trash them.

Jamie

BTW: Coverdale couldn't sing his way out of a paper bag - compared to Chris
Cornell. The stuff he did on Whitesnake or the work he did with Jimmy Page was
passable only.

My first experience with Soundgarden was watching the video to
Jesus Christ Pose which totally blue me away. One of my friends
had just gotten the Superunknown Album. I was disapointed that
the song I just heard wasn't on this ablum But, after hearing
that album songs like Fell on Black Days and The Day I Tried to Live
just had me hooked. And I quickly got around to getting their other
Albums still very Amazed.
P.S. Jesus Christ Pose is still my favorite song.

I kinda' grin and bear it . . . and only play one SG song per week . . . and
play it a lot . . . then at the end of the week, re-tune and work on the next
song . . . I also try to figure out ways to practice songs without changing
tuning . . . like 4th o' July will mostly work without the solo (with the
solo, it still works, but the solo will be in a different key) . . . and also
work a bit on the stuff in D more than other . . . 'cause they use D a lot,
so you can play a couple songs per week . . .

A twisted fork is a great idea, j.
Can you work on a design for that also, Zaiga?
I too think it'd be worth putting your design on the artwork page, Zaiga,
rather than just emailing it privately, so we can all see it if we want to......

>Okay, Blind dog, this is in Liesl's defense, but also in mine. For one
thing, Liesl is right. There is nothing wrong with being friendly on the
list. And on no, it takes up two minutes of your time to read my short

but polite. Telling me I had a lot to learn because you don't know how to
use your delete button? Sorry, it doesn't take much brains to push <ctrl

posting 'hello' messages every twelve hours, it was to promote friendship
and comfortability on the list. A lot of people on this list don't post,
maybe they don't have the time, or maybe they are just not comfortable
talking with people they don't know. Do you understand? Some people only
feel natural talking to people they know. Now put this into your head, if
you know about someone and where they are coming from, you feel more natural
around them. Think about it, huh?-Sara

Well, I'm sorry I'm only a relatively late-comer fan of Soundgarden, because
SPOONMAN was the song that took my breath away. Yes, the song that so many
people on this list seem to hate! I find it one of the most interesting,
different, catchy, rhythmic, pumping, rocking kind of songs I've ever heard.
And to turn it up LOUD!! Wow. A gym friend played Superunknown to me, I
bought it, loved it, joined this list, bought Badmotorfinger, loved it too
(Rusty Cage is now my favourite SG song, possibly my favourite by any band,
followed closely by Drawing Flies), will be getting Louder Than Love
tomorrow, and will no doubt love that also! Soundgarden just seem to get
better, if that's possible, as I delve back into time. So that's thehistory
of Carolyn-and-Soundgarden.

Most of you know this - but I'm from South Australia. I live in the
country. In the wine region of Coonawarra (if there are any red wine
drinkers on this list you'll probably have heard of this place - look out
for it on the labels in your nearest bottle shop!). And to see shows I also
have to go a long way. But I do love living where I do!

This is the main reason I responded to Kate's letter (but thought I'd throw
my two pennies' worth in about her other points while I was at it). Kate, I
certainly haven't disregarded the idea of Kurt being murdered rather than
committing suicide. As a Nirvana fan of course I'd rather believe that
anyway. And I do think one day this will "all come out in the wash". But
still, for now, I think it veeeeery strange that nothing concrete is being
done about Tom Grant's investigation..........

And Something Smells Where She Dwells would have to be one of the best
phrases I've read for a while! Good for a song title, maybe?????
