That gives me an idea for another survey/poll type thing! What was the first
song you (the current reader of this E-mail, whomever it may be . . . oh
what the heck, all you SG fans!) heard of SG that got you into them? I also
saw Black Hole Sun on MTV, but I just couldn't stand that video! Then my
friend got the album, and while I was just flipping through its tracks, I
heard 4th of July, and BOOM: copied the album to a tape and brought it home.
After I got used to it (before Soundgarden, I didn't even like any form of
rock music!), I went and got the TAB (guitar music for all you outsiders) for
it and . . . . well . . . lived happily ever after? Rocked! . . . yeah, I
like that one better . . .

What about you folks?

I'm a second person that doesn't like black hole that much(it's my second
least favourite Superunknown track after 'half').
I don't hate and will listen to it occasionally.
It is very Beatles sounding but the main reason I don't like it as much
as the others is because it isn't as good :)
If it wasn't played so much on the radio maybe it would be different.
If i really love a song I wouldn't care how often it was played on radio.
So if "Fell on black days", or "The day i tried to live" become huge hits
i would still love them. Infact i frequently start humming tdittl out of
nowhere. I know most of the lyrics of by heart for that song.

I think it was the Guitarist who asked what was the first song, video or
whatever that got you into Soundgarden. "Big Dumb Sex", and not for the
reasons you may or may not be thinking. Sure, it was kind of simple (compared
to some of their other songs) and I thought kind of brazen, yet I found it
funny too. Who the hell else had ever come out and simply stated "I want to
fuck you" in a song even though there have been probably a million songs
written about it, but none near so blatent. It made me laugh and it also made
me listen to the rest of the album. It was a hell of a lot better than what
was being played on the radio at the time (Poison, Bon Jovi, etc.) even
though that's one of the few subjects that those bozos seemed to know about.
They just didn't know how to write a good song about it.

Peyote is a special kind of funghi that mexican indians (I guess those
from th US too) use to get high and see their Nahual. The Nahual is
your guard animal. This is somewhat like the chinese horoscope, only
the nahual is not assigned by the day you were born. Here in Mexico
you need a special license to get Peyote and it very very hard to find
if you don't have it. Indians won't give you because they raise some
for their rituals. Due to the fact that Peyote is VERY dangerous,
nobody buys it. Be careful, if you leak Peyote, you might get in a
trip and never return to reality.

That would make sense - there is a band in Australia called Peyote (but I
thought that this was a play on words on Ceyote!!!) who opened for Faith No
More recently, but read about that elsewhere...

How do the guitarists on this list go for handling Kim Thayil's tunings when
playing SG stuff on guitar? Do you just grin and bear it, tuner close to

Yes, I have the Star Lover double CD. Do they sound like Soundgarden - No,
other than they have that new sound that came down from Seattle. Well it was
really not a new sound - but a sound that was lose for a small time.

Anyone that likes Soundgarden should have MLB in their collection - after you
hear MLB you get a better understanding for the emotions behind Temple of the

Someone posed the question, which SG song got you into the band?

For me, it was "Hands All Over" - heard it in "Pacific Heights" and had
to have it. "Slaves and Bulldozers" was the song that cemented my love
for the band.

Has anybody out there ever noticed a vague similarity between CC's voice
and that of the lead singer of the Guess Who (what was his name, Bert
Cummings?)? I'm not saying overwhelming similarity here, just a vague
similarity. I'd love to hear SG do a take on "American Woman". I think
it would be bitchin'.

You must know I meant that the song had a real Black Sabbath type of feel to it,
you know, doomy, tuned down, screaming vocals etc. Many SG songs sound very
"Sabbathy" - New Damage, Slaves & Bulldozers, Rusty Cage, come to think of it
practically everything on Badmotorfinger.

OK, Scott - I pulled out an old beat up copy of American Woman and your right
they do have a similarity voice. American Woman would be a great cover for
Chris to do. Of course there are very few songs that I can't image Chris not
being able to cover - well maybe not the Bee Gee's. Can't you just see Chris

I was just browsing the Web, and I saw something listed for a live online
performance featuring music of AIC, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Jimi Hendrix,
and more. I was wondering if anyone knew what the hell it was. Who will
be performing these artists' works? Will it be done by a symphony? Now
that I have my tickets, how do I view it when the time comes (Nov. 10, I
think)?

Hi Lamont It's funny how different people look at songs and have their
own interpretation of it. I had always tought Chris Cornell never sang
about anything emotional and only the decerning fan would be able to
decifer his lyrics and maybe, like yourself, adapt them to their own
situation. Maybe I've put Chris on a pedestal myself and your thoughts
on Searching with my Good eye Closed has brought a more human side to
Soundgarden, I think you've hit the nail on the head so to speak . It
goes to show that it's not only a slow song can hold an extreme amount
of emotion.. If I could have a wish for when I leave this earth it
would be for A Room a Thousand Years Wide to be played, now that
really does my head in, in the best possible way of course.

That was Seattle Scruffs, a compilation of early demos by SG ('87), Mother
Love Bone, and Alice In Chains. "This is my summation" is really "Nothing
to say" from Screaming Life (don't ask why). It's an interesting disc,
nothing to go into debt for. The version of "Beyond the wheel" has a good,
bottom-heavy mix. I'm suprised you found it in a regular cd shop, since
it's a bootleg.

It wasn't a song, actually. I read an article describing the band and
Ultramega OK in a 1988 Rolling Stone article. I liked what I read, but I
couldn't find the tape anywhere (this was pre-cd player for me). Then in
late '89, I saw the video for "Loud Love" on Headbangers' Ball. Then I read
a review of the album. I looked for it, and this time I found. I came, I
found, I liked.

I would have said it was more CC's tunings than Kim's but as for special
secrets, I would say most of (not all) SG's material relies on normal, drop D
and drop B tunings - just tuning the bottom E string to that particular note.

e.g: Drop B tunings - Rusty Cage, Searching WMGEC and Mailman.
Drop D tunings - Outshined, Drown Me, New Damage, Slaves & Bulldozers.
Normal tuning - Loud Love, Fell on Black Days etc.

I've had a hell of a time working some of the others out I can tell you!!

I'm a 30 year old working mother who can't believe

because it pays the bills and my 5 year old daughter doesn't want to put up
with me hanging around her all day. I know that this isn't the "typical"
profile of most Soundgarden fans, but so f***ing what?! I live in Belmont,
CA., it's about 25 miles south of San Francisco. It's alright here but I'd
really like to move away because it's difficult to meet people here who
aren't too afraid to open up and just be themselves. I guess it's probably
like that in most places but it just seems like there are too many people
here and we're all afraid of one another. I really would like to go back to
school and work on getting a degree (and hopefully a job ) in nursing. I got
into Soundgarden about 6 years ago after reading a Circus magazine article
about them and of course I thought that Chris was "cute" (eewwww!! does that

wasn't "cute" to me anymore but I still wanted to know more about them. I've
only seen them 3 times, but each show was great!!

I've only been into SG since Superunknown came out, but I'm
slowly accumulating a back catologue! The main reason I
subscribed to this mailing list was out of curiosity - to see
what other people like SG and for what reasons.
I myself like them as they have strongly melodic songs, a hell
of a lead vocalist, and a "sound" attitude. There's also a
LedZep element in there, and I've been into them since I was

Should our Web page ever be rescued from the murky nonfunctioning

CDnow's Soundgarden selection (they set this up just for us!) from the

In the beginning, when they released the video there wasn't any computer graphics. For example, the "blob" that flies out of the baby carriage.
Did they release the video before the effects were finished because of some dead line or what?

The review was a rave like none that I heard before, you

When I first heard it, I was totally blown away. I wanted

grabs you and smothers you in a swamp of gigantic riffs.
Needless to say, that was all I listened to my 10th grade
year(Plus Midnight Oil-Blue Sky Mining). Other students
(the chirpy jocks and air-heads) would not even dare
listen to something that was not in the top 40. It took about
4 years for them to sing "Black Hole Sun" Which is cool-I guess.
They may like the song, but they don't understand the meaning.
My Thoughts anyway

Yesterday I went & bought the CD by The Presidents of the United States of
America. (what a mouthful!!). The one which has Kim playing guitar in the
last track, "Naked & Famous".

And I love it. I reckon it's one of the best buys I've made (and that's
really saying something, since I've bought close to 700 albums over the
years). I just want to thank whoever it was who wrote to the mailing list
about this album - that's what prompted me to actually buy it. I loved the
song "Lump", but other than that I had no idea what this band was like.
They're great! Very light-hearted, with lots of pretty laid-back songs.
Fantastic! But they're NOTHING like Soundgarden. Which is why I admire Kim
for going out on a limb & doing something completely different (even if it
was playing the guitar for only one song).

Btw, my other recent CD purchases include Neil Young's "Mirrorball" (pretty
good), and I finally got around to buying Temple of the Dog & the Singles
soundtrack. I got those two after people on the list gave me some feedback
on them, suggesting I add them to my collection. So thank you, folks!! And
I have Soundgarden's "Louder Than Love" on order..............yes, I'm in
music heaven again!!

It's actually going to be done by the Seattle Symphony; apparently,
it's going to feature symphonic renderings of the bands' music. As far
as I know, Soundgarden has given the event its blessings. The concert
will include a live audio feed that can be heard using RealAudio
software (it's free, but I don't remember the URL) and continuously
updated video stills on the Web page.

WOW. This is like a flashback. This was the same way I found out about
Soundgarden. Loud love was reviewed (It was checked as a "feature pick")
and since they gave it such a good review I decided to check it out.
This was back when they still had long boxes. And stamped on the front
of the box was "Developing artist series. Special low price $11.99" I
must say that that was the best twelve bucks I ever spent. Though I am
ashamed to admit that I wasn't in ninth grade and still reading Circus,
but I was twenty.

Go blind dog,
You are right on the money. Who wants to hear bios of all these
people, I don't even think that any of them have posted before! As for
the subject line determining the value of a message, this is fairly
dubious. I still feel obliged to read any message that comes into my box
regardless of the subject line, especially lately when messages that
aren't delete worthy are few and far between. Getting to know each other
is fine, but isn't that what the member directory is for. Posting this
sort of thing to the list just means another thread of Soundgardenless
material destined for the delete button.

First of all, Mother Love Bone doesn't sound much like SG, but they are
pretty cool in a sort of glam-rock, 80's way. As far as good songs...
like Bone China, Stargazer, Man of Golden Words, Gentle Groove... and
everyone's standard "Singles" track: Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns.
Sweet.

And Fork necklaces: I have to say that I'm bummed that other people
finally figured out how to make them... my friend Sean and I have been
trading custody of the one we made for two years... :-) They aren't so
hard to make... just use soft metal forks (Like silver) and a
blowtorch... and pliers that won't scratch up the metal too bad. (so
fun-- and easy! why, we could even do it at home!)

I believe that SOMMS is an acronym for the palendrome...
(S)atan(O)scillate(M)y(M)etallic(S)onatas. Somebody has probably answered this
 question already.

I'm sure someone on here has a least one Mother Love Bone album. Are they any
good? Do they sound anything like Soundgarden?

I don't think they sound like soundgarden at all. I do like the music and I
think they would have had much success.
Also, I'm kind of interested in where people on this list are from. I'm from
 Portland,Or.
 Where's Jamie?

I'm sorry everyone had to read the people's descriptions. I thought people
would be interested. I guess not.
Justin-I am sorry. I didn't mean to waste your time. You have to admit,
while being very annoying to some people, it was a good thought if not a
good idea. YOur right, the list is for talking about Soundgarden and other
musical groups. Is that okay now?-Sara
