SPOONMAN RULES!!!!!!!!

I'm sorry, but I can't see why you would NOT like SPOONMAN! It's so upbeat! I
think it's a great twist after listening to 7 majorly depressing songs . . .
and it's got a great drum solo . . . and the main guitar riff rocks . . .

P.S. Chris wasn't on any mind-altering drugs. The song was written for a
friend of his that plays the spoons, you know, the guy that plays'em in the
song . . .

I've only really heard Superunknown stuff . . . but my least favorite off
that (by Chris) is Limo Wreck . .. . hard to explain why . . . it's just
kinda' too evil, I mean, "I'm the wreck of you, I'm the death of you all" . .
. umm . . . . I like the guitaring in Ben's songs (especially Head Down) but
I don't like the vocals . . .

Did anyone know that Ozzy Osbourne, Robert Plant & Elton John (!) are all big
SG fans, Elton loves Black Hole Sun, (we can forgive him being an MTV convert!).
I wonder how Chris and the band feel about someone they idolised when they were
young and inspired by, liking their music, something like that must be a bigger
buzz than getting your first advance or whatever. Has anyone read of any other
celeb's professing their admiration for our favourite band??

On another note........

On Saturday October 14th The Guitarist wrote:

>I've only really heard Superunknown stuff . . . but my least favorite off

I can't believe how Limo Wreck can be anyone's least favourite track off
Superunknown, sure it is quite dark (evil?) and sounds more in the style of the
Badmotorfinger material (probably why I love it), but Chris's voice sounds so
clear and rich on the verse and the guitar harmonics chiming away sound amazing,
even if someone had to provide "guidance" as it states on the album credits!!
It's also one of their most Sabbathy songs, which is always a good thing!!

On yet another note...!!

Does anyone have any interpretations on what Searching With My Good Eye Closed
is meant to be about?? It always struck me as having a religious type of aura
about it as if he's actually searching for some sort of answer about life,
existence, Heaven etc - "Is it to the sky..", "Looking for a paradigm..", i'm
probably completely in the wrong ballpark but thats what good lyrics are all
about, people interpret them in different ways, any ideas??

Keep holy the SABBATH day...........!!!

Subject: Bootlegs

I recently bought Ultramegaunknown and it has not left my CD player for
three days, the majority of hours spent listening to it. It is a must own.
The song list is on J. Crocker's bootlist, so I won't write them all here
- -- it;s a compilation of all(or nearly all) the non LP tracks of the last
two years with the Singles and S.F.W songs as well. It's well worth the
expense, I think, even at around US$20, unless you already own all the
singles and soundtracks. Would be worth it for me just for the live version
of "Beyond the Wheel".

I also think Stolen Prayers is an essential piece for any SG collection.
It's not quite as thick as Ultramegaunknown, but it's worth having for the
Songs for Ozzy (almost) trilogy as well as "Nowhere but you" and
"Fluttergirl." (It's also obscenely expensive).
...Speaking of Stolen P's, I think compiling lyrics for these songs is a
worthy project -- where do I send my submissions? I actually think the list
is an appropriate place for lyric discussions since everyone has the chance
to respond to everyone else's submissions instead of having it all go in
and out of one person's mailbox -- besides, there isn't much better to do.
What do people think?

Also, if anyone has information leading to the capture of a copy of
Satanoscillatemymetallicsonata, either alone, as part of a compilation, or
(but preferably not) with BMF, there is a reward...well, not really...

**I heard that Chris didn't write Spoonman for Artis the guy who plays
spoons in the video for the song, I heard that "Spoonman" was one of the
titles that Jeff Ament made up for the fake "Citizen Dick" album or ep for
the movie Singles. Apparently the fake title inspired Chris and he wrote
the song, later employing his acquaintance Artis to work with him. Of

This is not Soundgarden-related (and I'm sorry about that, I really am) but
it's worth looking at for the Seattle-music-scene-on-the-web news value.

At http://www.muohio.edu/~carmance/kurt.html, there is a very extensive
exposition by Tom Grant, the P.I. hired by Courtney Love to find Kurt
Cobain shortly before his death, describing his conviction that Cobain did
not commit suicide...

Spend enough time reading this and you will never look at Courtney the same
way again...

Subject: religion?

Chris writes a lot of songs having to do with religion and Jesus, etc. I
get the feeling that he thinks that a lot of organized religion and
so-called "religious, church-going people" are corrupt and a big joke, but
I can't figure out what his personal view on religion and spirituality is.
Judging by the fact that it's on his mind enough for him to write a lot
about it, I think he must have some personal beliefs, but I've never known
him to be the type of guy to reveal much about himself through songs or
interviews (which, by the way, I think is pretty cool because it keeps the
focus on the music). Anyway, I personally don't think he's an atheist
because he's a phenomenal musician, and I think music for many people can
be a spiritual experience, especially if they don't buy into organized
religion. I don't mean to offend anyone or to start some big debate, I
just wondered if any of you have any opinions on the subject...

This is great - I live in Austin and I haven't met any big Soundgarden
fans, much less any female fans, fans that collect vinyl, or fans that
heard of Soundgarden before Black Hole Sun came out. I've been collecting
for three years and will generally buy each piece of SG vinyl that I don't
already have and that doesn't cost over $20. I don't think I've paid over
$20 for any one thing, and the prices vary depending on where I buy the
stuff. The Austin Record Convention happens twice a year here, and it's
really great, except most everything is too expensive. I saw the original
Fopp 7" (the first Sub Pop single) there, but the guy was selling it for
$200!

Here's a list of my SG vinyl collection:
7":
1988 live in Seattle bootleg (Gun, Communication Breakdown, I Love You, Head
        Injury)
Loco Mosquito/Incescent Mace bootleg (red vinyl)
Come Together/Heretic bootleg
"Pub Sop" Sub Pop Rock City/Fopp on blue vinyl (this has a xeroxed sheet of
paper for the cover and says limited edition of 500 - does anyone know
         anything about this?)
Spoonman picture disc
Outshined picture disc
Rusty Cage picture disc
Thank You (falettinme be mice elf again)/Everybody's Got Something To Hide
         bootleg

10": Hands All Over 4 Track EP

12":
Ultramega OK ("A religious man might hink we're evil...A rational man might
        think we're religious...")
Louder than Love
Louder than Love promo copy (red vinyl)
Flower
Superunknown double LP (blue vinyl)
Loud Love EP etched disc
Jesus Christ Pose 4 track posterbag
Jesus Christ Pose 4 track etched disc
Screaming Life EP (red vinyl) ("BUY GREEN RIVER, BUY MALFUNKSHUN")
The Day I Tried To Live etched vinyl
Jesus Christ Pose promo single with Drawing Flies
Badmotorfinger (yellow vinyl)

That's it for now, but I'm always looking... Krissy

OK, OK, I know I've been sending a lot of messages, it's just that I've
never found people to talk with about this stuff before. I'm a member of
Knights of the Soundtable, and two years ago when I joined (paid my money)
I received a packet in the mail with a brief bio and discography. I also
got a CD entitled "Poncier" (after the character in Singles) and it has
Seasons, Nowhere But You, a different version of Spoonman, Flutter Girl,
and Missing on it. The vocals on all of the songs are obviously Chris's,
but there are no names on it, not his or Kim's, etc., and it doesn't say
Soundgarden on it anywhere. Anyway, it's a really cool CD - I figure it's
a few songs Chris has recorded that wouldn't necessarily have "fit" on past
SG albums. Maybe we'll see some of these songs on the new album...Does
anyone else have this or have any information on it?

Subject: Re: Meaning of Searching with . . .

Maybe I'm just another Monkey Circus freak but it's the big lies
that are more likely to be believed. Searching with my Good Eye Closed
has taken on special meaning to me lately (me and my girlfriend of 2 and
1/2 years recently called it quits). So this is how I interpret it:

Painted blue across my eyes (Whoever did this is making him see everything
in a "blue" ^ie sad^ manner) And tie the linen on (On where? and Why?)
And I'm on my way Looking for the paradigm So I can pass it off (A very
noncaring attitude, in fact spiteful to look for something to blow it
off) Is it on my side Is it to the sky (looking for alligence?) Looking
to the sky and down Searching for a ground With my Good eye closed (He's
looking for stability but the speaker is inable to see it correctly, kind
of hopeless) If I took you for a ride Would you take it wrong Or would
you make it right (One of the most important lines in the song: In our
realities we can either TAKE something as bad or try to MAKE it right,
such as a relationship ^a ride^) Looking for a pedestal that I can put
you on and be on my way (He wants to exalt the person and walk away, it's a
very sarcastic line. Here's all your fame and glory, but you don't
deserve it, only in your mind you do, and I'm gonna just leave) Stop your
trying to bruise my mind I can do it on my own Stop you're trying to kill
my time It's been my death since I was born (This person who asks for
exaltion hurts him, and he recognizes he's self destructive and this
relation really isn't helping him or protecting him) I don't remember
half the time If I'm hiding or I'm lost but I'm on my way (He looks back
and finds it hard to see if he knew where he was when no one else was
around ^the difference between hiding and being lost is knowing where you
are and if you want to be found^ But either way, it doesn't matter and is
leaving).

My hearing is just about gone due to years of Soundgarden abuse, but this
is what I can make out in these two songs. Parts I'm not sure about are in
parentheses. (I really should put the entire songs in parentheses, but I'll
go out on a limb and profess _some_ certainty).

Nowhere But You
- ---------------

Nowhere but you
I'm gone until I'm (within you)
Nowhere but you
There's (no better) place that I've been to

If I'm condemned
Let me rest on my pillow
And dream of the moments so few
And if I'm blessed
I'll be chasing your shadow
There I go
Nowhere but you

When you were here
I thought that I'd never miss you
Since you've been gone
I've felt like I never lived here

If I'm condemned
Let me rest on my pillow
And dream of the moments so few
And if I'm blessed
I'll be chasing your shadow
There I go
Nowhere

Nowhere but you

Fluttering
- -----------

(And drink in _______??)
With eyes (a'rust)
Tonight my tears might stain your wings
So flutter home
'Cause you're better off alone than with me

So hide your face
And tie your lace
Butterflies across your cheek
Forget how soon
You'll become a fool (for words) when I speak

Chorus: Flutter girl
You don't want to know where I live
You don't want to take what I give
And I give nothing for free

You don't want to know what I've lived
You don't want to take what I give
And I give nothing for free

My hands are rough
My fingers cold
Yor heart's so young and so naive
To ever feel
For a moment that I might let you believe...

I'll melt your smile
I'll tear your wings
I'll color everything you see
So flutter home
'Cause you're better off alone than with me

Chorus: X 2

As you can see, I'm not that good at this. Fill in the blanks and edit away
if you have a better take on this (ie., if you still have functioning ear
drums).

Hello Everyone,

New SG lister here. Seth informs me that Black Hole Sun (along with various
other Soundgarden tracks) are on a video:

A&M Video Chaos Vol 9.

Great, but I live in the U.K. and can not get hold of it. Does anyone know where
I can get it mail order? Or do any of you lot have 2???

Punk is a waste of great musicians. It is (as said before) three or four
power chords, loud beats, and no rules. (When they say PJ Harvey is punk,
without the rules, I can't help but laugh. PUNK HAS NO RULES!!!) Rancid is
still punk. They can play a beat that sounds more like something from a
1960's surf movie, and it's great. They can play that damn circus song
(dah-da-da-da-da-dah-dod-da-da-dah) and it's a song.
Punk guitarists are usually very good musicians that like the idea of
standing up on stage, making asses of themselves, and blasting out a few
chords. In punk, you can do anything.
Soundgarden, or grunge metal, has a distinct sound of loud, powerful, great
stuff to headbang to, and great stuff to just plain listen to. At punk
concerts, people crowd-ride to make asses of themselves. At grunge concerts,
people crowd-ride because the guy next to them got a little over-excited. At
punk concerts, there's a mosh pit with people wearing masks and carrying
dolls and looking stupid. At grunge concerts, people mosh because the guy
next to you got a little overexcited :)

Unfortunately, Bob, this IS a Soundgarden (As opposed to SOundGarden) list.
Yes, we are allowed to talk about Alice In Chains, but as long as it pertains
to Soundgarden. Otherwise, if you are intrested in reading about Alice In
Chains, then please join the AIC mailing list as well as the Soundgarden
mailing list.

So now I'll explain why I just said that. Seth and I were talking, and he's
going to do the list admin stuff, and I'll stick around to make sure that
things stay inline, SG is the MAIN topic, and stuff like that. I'm the

Really? Soundgardeny? I never liked it at all. U2 sold out.
I think they were aiming at a mix between industrial and alternative.
Too bad, I liked their old stuff.

Oddly enough, that was the song that got me hooked on Soundgarden. I heard
Black Hole Sun on MTV and I HAD to get the album. I thought it was overplayed
but I could never get enough of it.
Spoonman, on the other hand, I never really liked. I thought it was kinda
boring. I don't know why, though. A lot of people really like it!!!

Michael Kitzman - you RULE. That Seattle Sound posting of yours ruled. I'm
keeping a copy of it on my home machine. COOL.

More FYI:
On Black Cat (a.k.a. Bellshit) - the rather annoying (but cool!) bells that
you hear : I heard from a friend of mine that Chris Cornell was dating a
girl, and she had a set of wind chimes that Chris thought sounded really
cool. She came home one day, and he had dismantled them, and made a musical
instrument out of them. She was pissed, and she broke up with him. At a
guess, these are the bells we hear! Does anyone know if this song was
specifically written about Andrew Wood's death?

Oh - just to let you know how much of a SG freak I am - have you seen the
twisted fork that Chris has been wearing around his neck? It was featured -
sorta - in the Spoonman video - it can easily be seen in the Black Hole Sun
video - and it's on some of the new posters. Anyway - I made my own copy of
it. So, I wear a twisted fork around my neck. :-) I get comments all of
the time.
I've got a penchant for long posts, I guess... Here goes:

Pearl Jam did it.)

There was a Radio Station record that Soundgarden had - it contained a cover

No, not at all, drugs play a HUUUUUUUUGE role in rock and roll. And I do
agree with you. And I don't doubt you either.
Ecstacy is for the rave scene, heroin is for rockers, and TRLOFTUS is for fat

Or at least, that's the stereotype, and an intresting one at that. Why DOES

I don't know if any of you guys care but I live in Seattle and up here a
disc called "HATER" was released. In this band lie both Matt Camereon
and Ben Sheppard. Sheppard does most of the singing and guitar playing,
while Matt C. plays only guitar (nO DrUmS) and sings on one track.

It's a cool album and I reccommend to anyone. BEWARE: it doesn't sound

I know this is going to sound WAY out there, but during one of the
Mariners' playoff games, on TV they showed a close up of Jay Buhner's
wife. In the background, sitting one seat to her right, was either
Kim Thayil or someone looking a lot like him. I am sorry to say I
can't remember what game it was. I know it was in the Kingdome, not
in Cleveland or New York. It was either late in the NY series or
early in the Cleveland series. Jay was up at bat. If anyone, by
some very small chance, knows what I'm talking about and when, and
happened to record that game, please confirm or deny the accuracy of
my eyesight. Again, bear with me on this, I very well could be
completely wrong. Hopefully this will be related to Soundgarden
enough that I won't get flamed. Go Mariners!!!
