I think that there is a distinction you have to make when you
talk about rip-off bands. imho there are two different types (one much
worse and contemptible than the other). does the band use their
influences to create their own sound, like any musician would, or does
the band shamelessly steal other band's riffs, songs, or sounds and
parade them as their own? I personally don't think that the stone temple
pilots have stolen anybody else's stuff. and as a besides, I think that
weiland sounds more like layne staley than eddie vedder on plush.

was there a point to that? probably not. I'm just waiting
around for my next class to start.

btw, does anyone know why soundgarden thank living colour on the
liner notes to louder than love? I'm really interested what the
connection is.

Jackhammer's spot on about 'mailman'.
I believe 'Slaves & Bulldozers' is about the Music Industry. Slaves being the
artists and bulldozers the agents, managers, record comp. etc. that rip
artists off.

Enough of the Green River stuff PPPLLEASE!
I've got an old issue of Aus. Rolling Stone or Juice with Chris on the
cover. It has an 'on the road' interview (in Paris in think) with the band
and a little story about how they started. I'll see if I can find it and
relay any new info.

well, after a long night spent hunched over the scanner in my office
and gazing into photoshop, i've added 27 (yes, twenty-seven) new
images to the web page, including the computer rendering of chris
cornell at age 51 from the current issue of spin magazine. they're in
the usual place, which is now accessible from a fiery button on the
main page. no longer do you have to hunt for them. i've also reindexed
them somewhat.

dan ladle has added another piece of his artwork to the art gallery on
the web page. feel free to contribute your work. there is a link to
the gallery from the main page.

the mailing list member directory (you thought maybe i forgot?) is
still missing some pictures, namely those of the people on tha mailing
list. makes it a bit hard to have a directory if nobody sends me
his/her picture. i will not give up on this. for those of you who wish
to visit the future home of the member directory, click your heels
together three times, say "there's no place like our homepage," and
point your web browser at http://www.sgi.net/soundgarden/list/

i don't know if any of you have purchased one of jan's photos of chris
cornell at the lowlands festival from our web page (accessible via the
image repository); i received one in the mail yesterday, and let me
tell you, it is amazing. the scans do not do it justice.

Basically, personally I have never been able to get into Punk music, hence to
me that style of music is by and large awful, Country & Western music is
another thing that i've never got into so obviously you can imagine my thoughts
on that!! What i'm saying is that if you like stuff like Green Day, Bad Religion
etc, if it gives you joy and you get off on it then that is great, I am only
voicing my opinion. I saw Green Day at Reading this year and the highlight of
their set was a rendition of Survivor's Eye of the Tiger, obviously it was a
pisstake, but what I found strange was the note-perfect way they played it, I
have also heard that the members of Green Day are all highly trained musicians.
This to me suggests that they are nothing more than corporate fakes, I thought
the whole point and essence of punk was that it was very simple to play, messy
and unpretentious, and once you could play a few chords, get an amp, rehearse in
a garage etc you were "punk". What I am getting at is that it seems suspect
that GD should be playing this type of music when they are highly consummate
musicians, bandwagon- jumpers?? And personally Billy -Ray (or whatever his name
is) has a highly annoying, affected English accent and also likes to spit in
the bass-players mouth on stage, just two more reasons for me not to like them.

to whoever asked about kim thayil's track on the presidents of the
u.s.a. album...

yep, he plays a nifty little solo riff and kind of fades into the
background for the last half of the song. (`naked and famous', the
last song on the album')

it's actually kind of funny becuase kim's tone is so fuzzed out
compared to the twangy, quirky presidential-ness. it really shouldn't
sound good together, but goddamnit, it does.

btw...let me take this moment to highly recommend the presidents'
album...no, it's not brilliant music...yes, the lyrics are like
something off of nickelodeon...yes, the lead singer has a grating
voice that makes your hair stand on end. but let me tell 'ya, this is
one groovy cd that really grows on you from day one. it's light,
carefree (did i mention quirky? that's the best word i can think of) music
that makes you tap your toe and laugh out loud at the same time. (and
hey...kim t. likes 'em...you should too!!!)

One very good reason I can think of for why I like Soundgarden (this
one comes with the unspoken convention that Chris' lyrics,

Matt is the best modern day drummer there is. I even think he is better

specially hard, they just fit very well into the tune. (why do you think he

just comment on a subject or mention a screen name, with a BRIEF reference?
We're all reading the same mail, aren't we intelligent enough to know what is

YEAH!!! YEAH!!! You're right!!! It's the song of the beast!!! It's a song of
the world controlled by Satan!! "Shows them how to kill, so he protects his

Satanic viewpoint, as well as something they teach in Christian churches!!!
Awright! Let's see some more, "In the perfect game, tiny baby grows" I bet

I don't know about Bruno, but that is the only CD I have of them. I would
like to get more though. (It might take a while-I"m a college kid-I"m
poor.) But if someone on this list could send me a copy of the releasings
also and tell me which CD's are best to buy, I'd be grateful. I'd also be
grateful if no one flames me for not knowing much about Soundgarden. If
you would like to forward any other information to me about them that you
think any SG fan should know, I'll love you for it. Thanks a lot. -Sara

Actually it's "In the profit gain, tiny baby grows", definitely a song

The new Rolling Stone magazine (November 2, 1995) has an advertisement
for the upcoming book _Rolling Stone Images of Rock & Roll_. On one
page of the ad, page 51, there is a picture of Chris Cornell in the
upper left corner. It was taken in 1993. Good picture. Looks like I
might have to borrow the book when it comes out and scan the picture
for the Web page as part of my quest to have the SG page violate more
copyrights than any other page on the planet.

If I get around to it tonight, I'll scan the little picture from the
advertisement so everyone can see what the hell I'm babbling about.

When I heard the "Hooligan's" song at the begining of the verse I was
like: "Hey where did Cornell come from?" And also(hearing it more in
detail) there's a riff on the song that is very similar to "Loud Love."

Anyone see this on MTV? Whenever I'm on the computer I usually have the
TV next to me on MTV with the volume turned off, and I turned to look at
the TV, and Alison Stweart was talking about something and next to her
was one of those news things, and it was the cover of a book that said
Screaming Life on it. I was all "!!!!" so I turned it up and listened; I
guess Screaming Life is a book about the Seattle scene, written by the
guy who wrote the Nirvana autobiography. I was hoping it was a
Soundgarden biography, god knows I've been dying for one of those, but I
guess not. Anyone have any info on this???

Silverchair. Influenced by Nirvana?

I just read an interview of Daniel Johns, Silverchair's vocalist &
songwriter, and this question was posed:

WHEN THE FIRST SINGLE CAME OUT, HOW MANY SONGS DID YOU HAVE?
Daniel answered:
"We had about 10. The songs on the first EP were about the time when we
were influenced by Soundgarden and Pearl Jam and all the Seattle bands -
except for Nirvana. We don't really like Nirvana that much. The second
single [this would be 'Pure Massacre'] was more influenced by Soundgarden
and Helmet."

So there you go. They admit to being influenced by other bands (good on
them)................but not Nirvana. Since Soundgarden gets a couple of
mentions I thought this would be of interest to some of you.

Sorry, but this is mainly directed at the Australians on the list. Last
night I listened to a CD by Australian band, Powderfinger. Does anyone know
them? The singer, Bernard Fanning, has a voice that's more like CC's than
anyone else I've heard, although it sounds a lot less mature. I don't know
how old he is, but if he's only young with his voice not yet fully
developed, then I reckon he has a pretty good future ahead of him.

Can anyone tell me a bit more about Powderfinger? Like how long they've
been around, what other albums they might have (I listened to 'Parables for
Wooden Ears'). I heard on Triple J this morning that they're touring NSW,
Vic & SA with Sidewinder & Fur soon.

And now to include the non-Australians: are there any vocalists from other
bands you think might have CC-type potential?

I like Soundagarden because they made me sit up and take notice after a long
spell of hearing mediocre music. My favorite song : Hands all over (I work
for a big oil company and can understand the lyric"Put your hands away" My
least favorite lyric Big Dumb Sex. Not because I don't like the song but
because I almost break my neck running up the stairs to turn the CD way down
when the chorus comes on to keep my 5-year old from hearing it. Can't have
her going to kindergarten singing that.

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so happy. There are guitar tablatures on
Seth's homepage now. I can already do most of "Hunted Down", but there
is a part missing from the tab. The part where Kim is just showing off.
Yeah i know it would be hard to figure out. It's even harder for me
because i don't really have an ear for music. But i can tell if
something sounds right or not. But anyway, any guitarist on this list
who owns "Screaming Life/ Fopp", if you could figure out the missing part
i would email you money or something. Maybe. But it would make me
happy. And if anyone has transcriptions for songs that are missing,
please, please, send them to Seth! I am in hell's heaven now because i
am learning to play the music that i love. Thank you one and all. -j

This is my first time to dive into the depths of the soundgarden digest so
forgive me if I Ramble On. I saw Soundgarden in the summer of 94 at the astro
arena in Houston in JULY. Before he sang mailman he said we should dedicate
this song to our bosses.and so forth. I my be wrong on the exactness because
I had some idiot screaming in my ear about how much he luuuvvvess Rev. Horton
Heat,I hate that band. But I think the song is about those who oppress us,
slave drive us, and abuse us and us rising above it and giving a little bit
of it back to them.end of that comment and onto another. Matt Cameron is one
the best drummers out there but I don't agree with your praise of Dave Grohl,
talented he may be but I don't think it goes further than him slamming the hell out of the drums, compare territorial pissings to Jesus Christ Pose.
sorry about the repeated line but I can't make it disappear.
Yes silverchair does sound like SG but in a interview the singer from SC said
SG was one of their biggest influences, and I hope SG keeps up the influence.
By the way have you heard SG cover of Jimmy H.'s Future of a Thousand Years
I love the way CHRIS CORNELL changes the lyrices "Can you see me Flawsing My
teeth for you, Can you see me changing my sheets for you." Funny.
Favorite Lyrics.
Bit on the Bullet Now had a taste so sour had to think of something sweet.
Loves like suicide. This little ditty gives me goose bumps.

Yeah Lamont, "Spoonman" is alright, it's not my favorite but I like the odd
timing on it. I think it would be cool if they would release an acoustic
version of it,like the little bit of it you hear in "Singles". I think that
it was probably a good idea to release it as their first single because it
really did open people's ears to them. God, even my five year old daughter
knows the lyrics!! She was singing it on the way to school this morning when
it came on the radio. I know, I'm a terrible influence on her!!
                                             Concerning some Soundgarden
rumor nonsense, I came across Adam Curry's cyber sleaze page (who is this
person anyway?) and he wrote a while back that Soundgarden had hired
bodyguards, not to protect them from the fans, but to protect themselves from
themselves. According to this person, they were getting drunk alot and
getting into trouble by picking fights with other people. Okay, sorry about
the gossip crap, I just found that kind of funny and absurd at the same time.
I can't imagine them taking on the persona's of someone like Axl Rose, for
example. Oh please God no!!

I think that's a great idea. But where are all the postings on this? Maybe
Clown's received some directly.  I'd like to know what lyrics you all like;
for after someone brings to my attention particular lyrics, I find that the
song becomes even more significant to me. Anyone agree? So I'll start the
ball rolling and jot down ten favourites of my own:

"Steal the warm wind, tired friend
Times are gone for honest men
And sometimes far too long for snakes.
In my shoes a walking sleep
And my youth I pray to keep
Heaven send hell away
No one sings like you anymore" - Black Hole Sun

"So what you wanted to see good has made you blind
And what you wanted to be yours has made it mine
So don't you lock up something that you wanted to see fly" - Fell on Black Days

"When I hand my love in I'll be done" - Half

"I'm feeling that I'm sober even though I've been drinking
I can't get any lower, and still I feel I'm sinking" - Outshined

"It seems he's near me as I walk
One who loved what love deined
He lives these years that I walk blind
All these years cannot be mine" - Room a Thousand Years Wide

"The wreck is going down - get out before you drown" - New Damage

"Feel the ryhthm with your hands
Steal the rhythm while you can" - Spoonman

"Every word I said is what I mean
Everything I gave is what I need
Everything I've held is what I've freed
Everything I've shown is what I feel" - Slaves & Bulldozers

"Building the towers belongs to the sky
When the whole thing comes crashing down
Don't ask me why" - Limo Wreck

And last but not least:

"I know I'm headed for the bottom
But I'm riding you all the way" - Mailman
