Wow Steven you really are down on STP. I agree there is a certain degree
of similarity between their music and some other notable 'grunge' acts,
but it's hard to find bands that don't in some way sound copied
(Soundgarden is of course an exception). I thought 'Core' has a lot of
merit, I can't find any songs on there that you would call straight rip
offs of another band, more just following the general grungy style, but
it sounds really good and they play their instruments pretty well. Purple
was a bit of a let down, but it's not that bad, I'll certainly keep it in
my collection.

As for your comments regarding Silverchair, you are wrong. They weren't
discovered because they looked like Nirvana, and at that stage they
certainly weren't a record company project. The contest they won took
place on a TV station over here that has about 2% of the viewing audience
and about the only thing it does have is integrity.

I should note here that I can't stand Silverchair in the slightest and
even if they were legitamitly discovered, they certainly are the biggest
rip-off band in the world. The sad thing is that over here there are
bands that are starting to copy Silverchair's style, scary eh.

Thanks, Glenn. I agree totally. Your nervous enough the first time you
post ( I should know) without getting flamed right away for it. Besides,
it did have something to do with Soundgarden. And it was interesting. So,
just let people say what they want. Geez, how was he supposed to introduce

quite simply, I'd like to know what soundgarden song is least
liked by everyone on the list. we talk about the stuff we like, but what
about the soundgarden music we *don't* like? personally, mine is little
joe. I know there is a guy somewhere on this list who took that as his
name, but I'm afraid that that song is my least favourite. I don't
really like how chris sings it, and there really isn't much to it. so
how about the rest of you? (sorry gil:)

also, if there are 300 people on this list, then you wouldn't
know it by the number of postings. sure, we generate a lot of mail here,
but I'm wondering what all those silent people out there have to say.
come on guys, time to stop mooching :) say something about the band we
all love. otherwise things will become very stagnant, and sooner or
later it will really turn out to be a turd of a list. nothing to say
means nothing to do, in the world of mailing lists, and if the 'oldies'
of the list start saying the same stuff, then what will become of
us? let's find something to discuss for about three months, and then we
can talk about the new album, eh?

btw, did anyone get a copy of the ireland sunstroke festival on
tape? specifically the soundgarden portion? please mail me if you have
it.

This really bothered me back when we discussed Sheppard's veins. I've never
done heroine (or any other of that nonsense for that matter) and I have veins
alot like Sheppard's. No, I'm not any bigger than him.. I'm his height
(well. I guess he's about 6'2" or 6'3") and I'm lighter than him (I guess
he's over 165lbs definately.) I guess my large veins come from doing various
lifting and what not... I'd probably develop the same thing if I played a
bass (a big, somtimes bulky instrument) and slung it like I had Epilepsy
(sorry, best description I could muster). I'm not saying that Ben
does/doesn't have a drug problem.. I'm just saying that after looking at a
guy's arms you can't really accuse him of injecting crap into his arm's..
unless the tale-tell 'tracks' are visible. I personally have never noticed
these marks on Sheppard's arms... and I'd say this is bulging vein argument
is unjustifable... (c: Everyone have a great day...

Oh, I never really liked Green River much, but I believe that Bruce
Fairweather (MLB.. no not Major League Baseball) played precussion for them..
but don't quote me on that.

On a different note: on the song 'Touch Me'... the female vocals are
Stephanie Barber, right? Where have I heard this name before? Anyone,

I would also like to think that Chris and the rest of the band are a bit
beyond that sort of thing. I always thought that SG were serious and really
into their music, it would be a terrible let down if I found that they had
to resort to cheap antics like that to gain a couple extra fans.
I am certainly not impressed by that stuff.

I thought that MoonDruid's little message was very amusing. It may not have

Anyway, I thought the purpose of this mailing list was to bring us (SG

Bands are never beyond anything - if Soundgarden got too serious, I'm sure
one of them would eventually say "Let's snap out of it!" Chances are that
the songs were not done to attract new fans, but were just a bit of fun -
for all their great music, I think they're entitled to a bit of fun!

If they were Satan worshippers, Soundgarden have produced some great music
and have done a great job of hiding it!

On the subject of people's worst SG song, my opinion is that Exit
Stonehenge is a load of toss and Full on Kev's Mom comes a close
second. Don't get me wrong SG are my fave band in the known universe
its just that I am able to differentiate between bad and good, i'm not
one of these diehard worshipping fans that won't hear a bad word said
against their band. Also what about ( and this is a bit flippant!)
peoples least fave band member?? Ben gets my vote since I read an
interview where he said he hates touring, despises the fans and said
he liked to spit on them and kick them at gigs- nice guy!! Also I
think the songs he's written (except Somewhere) are not that hot.
Just my opinion.

j,

I can appreciate that you are a fan of Offspring, fair enough, each to
his own, whatever you're into. My point is that Offspring, to me are
an unashamed Nirvana rip-off band, with a dreadful whiny singer, in
fact its possible to sing specific Nirvana melodies over certain
Offspring songs, to me that is unforgiveable. Besides I think the
equally awful Green Day and Bad Religion are just as responsible for
bringing Punk into the mainstream in the US

Subject: My mailbox is cleared for more hate mail, so, in your own time.

Well, again I'm reeling from a heavy bout of hate mail, but for once I
think that just maybe I was right. I'm not going to say any more on
the Stone Temple Pilot's issue, what's had to be said already has, and
I guess it just goes to show how many people on this list have nothing
better to do than compare music rather than listen to it.

The reason for the mail was not because of Steven's opinion on STP, that
I considered a fair and justified commment, I mean, yes, I don't agree,
but I do accept what he had to say. The comment that drove me to send
the mail was the one on grunge, the "all you need to play it is
instruments and the look". This kind of comment has no foundation or
justifies how many bands earn their status as musicians, and just
shows how naive Steven really is. Now, having read the comments from
ClownWithBazoka it's somewhat obvious that you didn't really read my
mail, more my name at the top and decided to hassle me, because if I'd
of said something like that, you'd have been the first on my case. I
don't "get off" on sending this kind of mail, it just gets to me when
someone comes out with a statement like that. The same to MoonDruid,
not every word I send is a flame, I usually recieve one first. I don't
expect anyone to bow down to my opinion, I never have, many people
think this because I voice it, and many times I have apologised where
proven wrong, unfortunately it seems I'm the only one willing to do
 this.

I also think that my words have been somewhat mistrued, one of my early
comments on lyrics, whereby I'm noted to have said that it is
pointless to talk about them is somewhat far from the truth. My
actual statement was that people should have their own opinion on
what lyrics are about, if that wasn't the case a full explanation of
each song would be given in the inlay. If you have an idea for a
song, and say, it's better than the one Chris had in mind, or apparently
did (usually the case) do you change your idea to his? If so, why?
Chris Cornell is NOT a god, just someone with the fortunate ability to
take emotion, trivia and fiction and express them in a global manner.
It doesn't mean he's any more important than anyone else, and that is
why your own opinion of a song is just as important as his.

On a general note, I don't own Soundgarden's "Louder Than Love" LP, and
nobody seems to mention it, is it a worthy purchase?

I'm sorry you had to receive any hate mail - I'm sorry I have had to receive
any hate mail - I'm sorry anyone on this list has had to receive hate mail. We
are a group of people from all walks of life and we are going to disagree with
each other one time or another.

But please guys - Lets start this week out a little bit better. It's hard
enough defending my musical taste to the world around me - that I don't want to
do it here, where I hoped I would be among friends and people of similar taste
(notice I said similar).

I really love music - all music. Some types more than others, but I like tea
better than coffee - so big deal. I want to hear your likes and dislikes -
that way I can make a better choices when I buy music. If someone on this list
tell us that so and so is got a really good CD out. And then someone else
agrees - I consider buying it. The same goes if allot of you give me bad input
on a CD. That's why we come to this list. To share our ideas, our likes and
dislikes - and God forbid make some new friends.
And this can be done in a nice constructive way - not with hate.

So, Stacy - I think you should try Louder Than Love - in fact - if you give me
your address I will make you a copy, that way you can give it a listen and not
sink any money in to it. It is a good CD, not SG's best but worth having.

And Steven - Where are ya. I miss your input.

Clown - I haven't seen any of the strange sense of humor your so good at.

Last but not lease Moon Druid - Oh, you know how I feel about you.

I consider myself one luck lady - I have 4 guys here to help me learn about
music and to share a small piece of my life with - so please put away the
sarcasm, the flames, the hate - we all need you on this list.

Jamie
PS: You can all stop throwing up now - your friendly village idiot will stop

Hands all over, Ugly Truth, Uncovered, etc. The only thing I don't
like(personal opinion) is that CC's vocals are still shitty. I think
(p.o. again) that his great vocal sounds start from BMF on. But anyway,

holding the microphone on one side of a fan, and singing from the other

Yeah, nowadays in the studio despite all the high-tech digital equipment
and oodles of effects like reverb, eq, flanging, phasing, echo delay,
chorus, etc etc, most producers and engineers just like to use a fan.

After waiting about five minutes for the October 5th digest to load in off
my 9600 baud modem, I popped it open to find literally pages of text
devoted to the fact that people are clogging up the list with extraneous
comments about non-SG issues. The irony of it all.

But I'm not one to fail to jump on the bandwagon, so I thought I'd clog
some modems with some supplementary supplemental addenda to the miscellany
that has already been drawn out ad nauseam.

First of all, I have avoided weighing in on the STP issue, since I thought
it was irrelevant. But now that people have started complaining about the
STPization of the list, my urge to annoy has overwhelmed by better
judgement.

I don't like STP. But too much is made of their similarity to Pearl Jam.
When I first heard them, I thought the station was playing an old Alice in
Chains b-side.

They are just another 70's hard-rock derivation -- as are bands like, oh,
say, Pearl Jam and AIC. I think those of us who have been listening to SG
and Mother Love Bone since the 80's (and aren't we so fucking cool?)
started to feel that the "Seattle Sound" had been co-opted by the mass
culture, and just as that happened STP came along. I was conditioned to
receive STP as an aversive stimulus. So it really did not matter whether
STP ripped off AIC note for note or actually came up with the formula
before everyone else. I still would not like them. (I can only imagine what
Rush must have sounded like in '74 to Zeppelin fans.)

Also, I must confess confusion about one post:

I'm afraid I must take a shot, but not for the reason you think. Who the
fuck are you, anyway? You deleted out the quote markers and made it look
like this post came from me. What's more, it looks like I lost my mind,
posted one item of a top ten list -- number 8, for some reason -- and then
responded to my own post.

And how did you respond to a post which the mailer told me did not get
sent? I don't see the full post in my digest. What the hell is going on?

soundgarden are definitely *not* beyond that sort of thing.
sure, the play a lot of serious and sombre stuff, but they have to
lighten the mood at some point. who could play mailman, the day I tried
to live, outshined and limo wreck night in, night out without going manic
depressive? chris said once that they play so much dark music, that
sometimes they have to look at themselves and laugh, and then launch into
sex farm. I don't think their dark style and a bit of humour are
mutually exclusive. so if they want to sing 'I love santa' backwards,
then more power to 'em.

Well to put a stick in the spokes..
Who says that any band is original? Popular music is really an evolutionary
process. Nirvana were sued by Killing Joke for ripping off "Come as you are"
and their seems to be some contention over "Smells like teen spirit" and a
Pixies song. Would Pearl Jam be around if not for Jimi Hendrix and Neil
Young? Soundgarden have taken the HM sounds of the 70s (Black Sabbath) into
the 90s. The whole Seattle Sound is a farce. It's just a marketing label
like the Mancester thing. How hard is it to sound 'grunge' for God's sake?!
Turn up your guitar and go. Doing it well...that's a different story. STP
copped a lot of flack and I really think it was just the timing of the
release of the album. As Pavement say.."I think their foxy are they foxy to
you" (Range Life). Badmotorfinger was a definite cognitve leap and took
music forward a step. A can't say that about many other bands from the so
called scene. AIC's harmonys maybe. Who gives a fuck about the Seattle bands.
(Mudhoney - "Overblown"). I don't. SG seem to deserve more than this label.
The real/fake/original thing is stupid. All we are argueing about is bands
that play with the standard instrumental line-up and sing pop songs (I'd
really like to hear that band with to bodily noises).
Anyway that's enough. Don't get to riled up about the 70s SG reference. We
can't have the 90s without the 80s and 70s (to state the bleeding obvious).
Lay off the kids too (Silverchair). I think their success can be contributed
to how together they sound for a bunch of children. They may push the
boundarys of music a little yet (like SG, unlike PG and Nirvana).
See ya,
RICH.
P.S. Carolyn - How does it feel to have the same home town as Dave Graney?

I was thinking on the way to uni today that maybe soundgarden's
lyrical content (esp. chris') may look like it is getting less aggressive
and more oppressive, but maybe it is getting more optimistic.

if you look at the songs from badmotorfinger through to
superunknown, the first song 'rusty cage' has chris singing about, of
course, how he is going to break his rusty cage. but the last song from
superunknown (like suicide) has him safe inside his gilded cage. is this
an improvement? are they getting just too darn happy? one more time
around might do it?

	only a suggestion though :)

Subject: concerns
From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

I try my best not to post stuff that isn't at all Soundgarden- or
mailing list-related, and it's always better if message content deals
with SG rather than just the list. Anyway, I have a gripe with the way
things have become. I realize that there were a lot of hostile
feelings towards certain subscribers of this list and that some of you
felt that newcomers would not post as a result of this. Well,
newcomers eventually did post.

Now what's killing me is that 90% of the new posts have nothing to do
with Soundgarden and EVERY TIME a newcomer posts, some oldtimer posts
a "Welcome to the list! I like your style! Post more!" message. I
think some of you are losing sight of the original intent of this
list: TO DISCUSS SOUNDGARDEN AND RELATED ISSUES. I can deal with the
arguments about bands being ripoffs or not; I can deal sometimes with
discussion about Silverchair and AIC. But please please PLEASE people
can we try not to make a 300-person social gathering out of this list?
That's not why I created it. If you like what someone says, write to
them privately, if it has nothing to do with Soundgarden. If you have
something like "Hey guys! I have nothing to say about Soundgarden, but
I felt like saying hello to you all!" to say, say it to yourself.
Newcomers, there's no need to write a separate message just to
introduce yourself.

If you want to be all warm and fuzzy and social, arrange to meet
people on IRC or in some AOL chat room or whatever.

The other thing that has been bothering me for a while is that the
list has become stagnant. Those who have been here since the beginning
have discussed everything imaginable that relates to Soundgarden. It's
up to the new people to ask questions and start interesting threads,
and don't hesitate to post if you have something to say about
Soundgarden. We may have heard it before, but that only allows us to
give better replies. We'll all be back to square one in 43 days.

You may think this has nothing to do with sg but bear with me.

Just to end all the piecemeal postings about the (ostensible) subject of a
Soundgarden song I have not heard, I thought I'd post the meat of Ty Cobb's
lifetime stats:

Batting Avg: .367 (1st)
Total bases: 5863 (4th)
RBI's: 1961 (4th)
Runs scored: 2245 (1st)
Hits: 4191 (2nd)
Stolen bases: 892 (3rd)
Stolen Prayers: 0 (1st, tie)

Played center field for the Detroit Tigers, 1906-1928. First triple-crown
winner (HR's, RBI's, Batting), 1909. 12 AL batting titles, 1907-15,
1917-19. Inducted into Hall of Fame as one of 5 charter members (w/ Babe
Ruth, Honus Wagner, Walter Johnson, and Christy Mathewson -- who, by the
way, was never a woman), 1936.

I mention this, in part, to get under the skin of all the Aussies and Brits
who won't understand any of it. FYI, baseball is that game which they
modelled cricket after....Ok, let's fight now...

Also, the boys themselves are all baseball right now as their beloved
Mariners are chasing a pennant. (Now maybe we can debate whether Edgar
Martinez is a better hitter than Cornell is a singer...)
