NO! NOT Soundgarden. Instead, I'm listening to that band that some of you
love to hate (Little Joe), and others of you hate to love (Avatar,
Greendoc), and still others of you admire them for having done what they've
done (Jackhammer, Jamie)...

Silverchair's "Findaway".

Me, I like 'em. We've been through all the rip-off debates before, so I'm
not buying into that again (other than to say none of the Silverchair
members even OWN a Nirvana album, and never really liked them that much -
they far prefer Helmet & Tool & Soundgarden [yes SOUNDGARDEN] and shit, a
person can't help the way they look, or sound........).

Anyway, why would I be mentioning "Findaway"??? No reason really, other
than it reminded me to tell you all that I am actually going to see
Silverchair in Adelaide on 26 October. This is exciting for this little
country girl, because I rarely get a chance to see a "big" live band these
days............ Other than the fact that I like Silverchair's album
'Frogstomp', I have no definite opinion of them one way or the other. I
guess I'll have a little more insight at the end of this month. Yippee!!

Keep smiling, groovers ~

Howdy, I read something on the PJ mailing list that I used to be on and I
just wondered if anyone here had thought if the guys in the band look in
on ours, or any other SG list? If I was in their position (which I am
obviously not because if I was I would be writing about myself but that's

the whole shebang seemed to start when stacey and I had our
little barbecue early on. he was arguing that his opinion is just as
important as chris cornell's. that's all well and good, but fails
miserably when read in the context of the first couple of letters.

stacey seemed to be arguing that it was pointless to talk about
soundgarden lyrics here on the list (correct me if I'm wrong stacey). it
may have been in reply to my earlier posting that outlined what the
meaning of a song was for chris cornell. now I personally think that
that is a fair enough way to go about responding to a lyric question, but
stacey seemed to take offence, and went on to bag a bunch of people on
the list.

most important of all, he said that his opinion was equal with
that of chris'. I just have to disagree. in the context of lyrical
content, ie: what soundgarden songs are actually about, stacey's opinion
is *not* more important, or even as important, as chris'.

this is not a flame. I'm just reminding everyone that this roast
up came from stacey taking a thread out of context, and shaping it so he
could turn it into some sort of wrestling match with the rest of the
group. someone simply wanted to know what songs like limo wreck and
fourth of july were about. it wasn't a question of what a song means to
different people.

so if someone can argue why chris cornell's opinion (delete
opinion and insert *knowledge*) is only of equal importance in relation
to lyrical content, meaning, significance and origin with anyone else's,
then I'd be happy to hear from you.

my address is at the top of the letter.

I think you would never expect the kind of support that Seattle bands
are getting here in Mexico. All my friends at school love SG, PJ, AIC,
and Nirvana. I think this is because Mexican bands (GOOD bands I
mean) don't get much support from the TV; radio stations do open some
space for them but they frequently mix their music with this 80's kind
of cheap singers. As a result, people who want to listen to REAL music
must tune to those stations broadcasting music in English.

Okay... via Guitar for the Practicing Musician magazine, here is a list of the
equipment used by Chris and Kim on Superunknown, since a few of you have been
curious about it:

Chris:
Guitars: Gretsch Duo Jet, Gretsch Silver Jet, Gibson ES125, Gibson Les
Paul (own one myself.. Chris, my man!), Fender Jazzmaster, Fender
Stratocaster

Amps, etc.: Mesa amplifiers and cabinets, Celestion speakers

Effects: Leslie cabinet (for "keyboard" effect on Black Hole Sun)

Kim:
Guitars: Guild S-100, 1956 Fender Telecaster (had one of these for a
while.. nice!), Gibson Firebird

Amps, etc.: Peavey VTM-120, Mesa 100-watt Dual Rectifier Solo heads

Effects: Vox wah pedal, DOD FX-10 BiFET preamp, Boss CE-2          Chorus pedal;
two switches (foot activated, I presume) for clean/distortion and
Modern/Vintage settings on the Mesa

Other: Samson wireless system

Hope that was helpful or interesting.

Hi friends and foes (hopefully, I don't have many foes... :) )...

Hate to bother everyone again, but I had to mention something that's
been bothering me. In the wake of the mushroom cloud hovering above
Stacy.Meyrick's head from the severe beating we've all been laying on
him, I've noticed people trying to say that some people's opinions are
more or less important than others. Nothing could be further from the
truth.

Do I feel that my opinion is more 'important' than that of Chris Cornell??
No.
No more so than I feel Cornell's opinion is more 'important' than mine.
What I mean to say is that you can't place a level of importance on what
someone thinks... they're thoughts. You can't rate them. Everyone has
something to say, and they have the right to think what they wish: it's a
fact of life.

Chris isn't more "important" because he's the lead singer/rhythm guitarist
of Soundgarden, a "superstar" rock quartet. He's just a man. So is
Matt. So is Ben. And so is Kim (sex change...hahahaha! :) ). I'm a man,
too, and my opinion can carry just as much weight as Mr. Cornell's.
And I'm sure Chris would agree with me.

Thanks for listening,
Glenn

Finally thank you all, I did say the other week that you had all inspired
me and last night I finished my first ever song about my hampster which
escaped a few weeks ago and got into the wall cavity of our house
(don't worry she got out again after we had a brick removed from one

see it on a CD then check the names of the band members, and tell your

I tend to agree with you about STP, they are one of my favourite
bands, at first I thought they WERE a rip-off, songs on Core like
Creep (Nirvana) Peice of Pie (Alice in Chains) and Plush (Pearl Jam)
do leave alot to be desired in terms of originality, but the key thing
is the SONGS whatever you say about them it can't be denied that they
are great songwriters and Purple proves this and also goes a long way
to dispel the rip-off jibes as they have now found their own sound in
the Grunge genre, who's to say they were'nt playing this style of
music long before the Seattle scene blew up. I think it's fakers like
Silverchair, Offspring and Bush that should really be getting slated.

As for Reading 95 and SG's performance I think i've said at least
twice in previous posts that SG were a massive let-down, it's the
first time i'd seen them and I was waiting all weekend but it was a
terrible anti-climax. They looked like they just came to take the
money and run. I dunno why they cancelled last year cos' of CC's voice
as it sounded pretty ragged this year. They had no charisma, power,
sense of occasion, nothing, in fact the best thing about them was CC's
cheeky grin as he first came onto the stage and said hallo. Still
everyone has off-days, i'll give em' the benefit of the doubt and wait
till they come back next year.

Soundgarden probably aren't WATCHING us as a month or so ago we
got a letter from the guy who actually writes the reply's from the real SG
page (not half as good as our Seths attempt may I add), and said that
they only rarely look in on that one and even more rarely answer letters
themselves.
Shame really or we could find out some incredibly usefull pieces of
information to surprise our friends with.

Okay my pretties,

If you all remember I was one of the few who said I already knew what all of
you looked like - I'll refresh your memories - Men: fine handsome Women:
beautiful.

I did not think it was necessary to place my image out there for you to know
me. Read my posting - that should scare you enough. But, I keep getting these
little hints about placing my self out there for you to goggle at.

Well you are in good company, my family and love ones have been trying for
years for me to have my picture taken (I usually hold the camera at family
events). My sister keeps asking me what will they put on the side of the milk
carton when I'm kidnapped by little green men from outer space. And what would
channel 4 put on the 10:00 news when I maze someone for trying to take my Jeep.

Like another member of this list the only picture I have is the DMV (driver
license) photo (shutter). Now we all know that no one every looks like their
DMV. How else to do you think we been able to fake our ID's all these years.
No one look that bad!!!!!!!

Well, fine -- before my next birthday I will have a picture taken -- I will
then pass it to fearless leader and you can all rid your computers of those
nasty bugs. Now if you just knew when my next birthday was?????? I know none
of you know that little fact about me.

Luv you guys
Jamie

PS: There is also a small problem with work related stuff - security,
firewall, company policy - that has to be looked at before I can send anything.

I think what Blind Dog is trying to say is that when it comes to
music, no one's opinion is more important than the person who wrote,

First - Welcome Scott......

Now does it really matter if a band is sexual ambiguity or not (love how that
rolls out your mouth - ambiguity)? Good music is good music and we all know
that SG makes good music. The "Rock Star" image has always been - I'm middle
of the road, but I could jump to either side in a heart beat. Case in point
David Bowie, Janis Joplin, the singer in REM (Michael ??? can remember right
now - I will as soon as I send this out). We were never told out right that
they were gay or not (really none of our business) - but didn't it just adds
more color to the artist.

As for the Big Dumb Sex being on the gay side - I have been told this before
and I just can't see it. Maybe it's because I'm a women and to have Cornell
say these thing to me - - - well we all get the idea. I guess I'll just have
to ask one of my gay friends to listen to the song and tell me their opinion.

I do like Melissa Etheridge and her sexual preference is of no concern to me.
She has a powerful voice and her music can be interpreted as either gay or
straight, male or female. Her new video - something about Little Secret - not
sure on that only have seen the video once - check it out, if you thought "Your
the Only One" was racy - wait till you see this one.

My apologies if you all have this info already, but I rarely post
anything...and I haven't had time to catch up on the SG Digest for over a
week. Rolling Stone did an entire page on the Reading Festival in this
months issue...with barely even a mention of Soundgarden, BUT they did have a
new photo of Chris with a short note on Soundgarden, at Ireland's Sunstroke
Festival:

"After canceling the European leg of last year's tour because of CC's
strained vocal cords, Soundgarden finished the job at Ireland's Sunstroke
festival, with two new songs: 'Flies' and 'Ty Cobb'. An LP is due next
spring."

For everyone who asked me for info on ordering back-issues of Rolling Stone
(June 1994 and the year end issue Dec./Jan. 94-95), with SG and CC
interviews...if you weren't able to get them through Rolling Stone or PJ
STARR, you can always go into the "Rolling Stone archives" to read the
articles (I don't know if photos are available). I don't have any other info
or addresses, so please E-mail Rolling Stone Magazine DIRECTLY
for more info on how to get into the archives:

I'll have a go for you greg. the picture on the front of
superunknown is a twofold sorta thing. the big one is the band picture.
it didn't strike me first off as a picture of four guys, but if you look
a little closer (took me a *long* time :), everyone from the band is
there. with the forest fire at the bottom, I read that chris felt that
everyone else thought that the mental image of soundgarden was a nice,
pretty place with lovely blossoming flowers and beautiful colours
everywhere (that's not my mental image. I think of scorched earth). so
just to set everybody straight, they put that forest fire picture at the
bottom. I also have to admit that I didn't see the upside down stuff
straight away either :)

HI! No this isn't another unsubscribe message, in fact, quite the
opposite. This list is cool so far, and everyone is really friendly.
Anyway, to get on with what I am posting for, I just wanted to say that I
don't really care who copied who. Who came first, Pearl Jam, STP, or any
other bands? Does it really matter? If you like the music, listen to it.
If you don't likeit, don't listen to it. Personally, I've only heard a
couple of Silverchair's songs,( but my boyfriend just bought the cd, so I'm
sure that I will here more) and i hardly ever listen to Stone Temple
Pilots, or Pearl Jam. That's not to say that I don't like them, just that
I don't really have time to. Which reminds me, when was the last time I
listened to Soundgarden? Maybe I should go do that. Or my homework.
Whichever comes first. (SG, of course). Well, have a nice night and don't
miss me to much this weekend cause I am going home!!!! Please, don't crowd

If Soundgarden and Kelloggs teamed up to market a Soundgarden breakfast

Some things to think about:

	*Shape(s)?
	*Marshmallows? Fruit? Nuts? Chopped steak?

I have gotten so many message like yours. Maybe SG freaks get drawn into
normal life settings - we are put there to annoy the rest of the world. Now, I
think the band (especial Chris) would like that. There is some (super)unknow

Hello:
I'm not sure if I'm doing this right (I'm new here), but I'll
throw out some questions regardless. How good is Chris Cornell at
guitar? I've seen the Badmotorvision video, so I know that he can play
the intro to "Rusty Cage" as well as power chords and all the basic stuff
(I loved his solo version of "Mind Riot"), but I'm sure that he's
improved by now (he wrote some pretty tough songs for SuperUnknown). Was
that him playing guitar on "Seasons"? If so, that's impressive.
I'd like to hear back from someone who knows about guitar
playing.
Thanks,

p.s. - For anyone that cares, I saw Radiohead in concert not too long
ago; Thom the singer was an incredible guitar player (not to mention
singer).

This is definitely good - can't wait to get this feed back - I'm despaired for
fun junk.

Here's mine:

Type of cereal - No, flakes our boys would never be flakes and they wouldn't
be corny - so
Sugar Pops sweet - filled with air (hot for our guys) - never go limp
(won't touch that one) in
milk and no nutrition value - just good (I like Sugar Pops so don't run them
                                down)

Shape - Pops are round - okay are guys are well rounded -
right.

Other Ing. - Marshmallows Naaaa - no softy in the band
                               Fruit - just their fans
                               Nuts - I guess that's us again - but, I wonder
about Ben at times?
Chopped steak - Hell yes - thick and rare - the
cow still screaming (I have just lost
the veggie lovers respect - right)

Picture - Chris - but only if it is a still from Motorvision -
the part where Chris is looking in the camera
and all you see is his mouth wide open exposing everything (most
unflattering but good for a cereal box that
sits on you table early in the morning -
great for dieters).

Prize - a plastic copy of Chris's fork
a miniature of Matts drum stick (only one - you
have to buy another box to get the other
one - and then hope it's one with the other stick in it)
a can of beer (empty - you don't think Kim
would hand over a full one)
Ben - a book on How to cope with back strain

Well, how's that - not want you wanted - to bad. Breakfast is the only meal I
eat and if I want to have SG as my only meal than the above is what I want...

I was at that concert. It was outstanding from where I was standing (the
front row -- directly in line with Ben). The sound and Chris's voice were
flawless. Cornell's voice was effortlessly powerful and controlled and his
facial expressions and stance were arrogant and teasing. Ben was into it
too, definitely putting on a hysterically funny show -- flailing himself
about the stage as usual, making faces at us, etc. Cornell was confident
and laid-back and deservedly proud of himself.

Thing is, we both love this band (same taste). We both were elated to be

Subject: Mature music?

Some of the posts in the last few days make me laugh because I know exactly
how you feel. A few of you had mentioned how the people you work with can't
stand Soundgarden or any other type of music you enjoy. They think it's
juvenile, immature, or just "not real music". One of my best friends insists
that Soundgarden are interesting, but it's not music. The other night I made
her compare what she likes (Whitney Houston, Garth Brooks, etc.) to
Soundgarden. I know this comes across as absurd to most of you, but it was
actually pretty cool.
                                                                She
eventually sort-of agreed that lyrics like"And I will always love
you---ooooooooo- I will always love you" just don't require the same deep
thought processes as something like "Shower in the dark day, clean sparks
diving down--cool in the waterway, where the baptized drown". That's my
method, I slowly convert my friends and even my family to opening their minds
to music as "immature" as Soundgarden.
Last summer I took my 40 year old
brother to the first concert he had been to since seeing Peter Frampton
headline a Bill Graham's Day on the Green in the summer of 1975. You guessed
it, Soundgarden. He's now a total fan. "Jesus Christ Pose" is his favorite
and he thinks Chris Cornell is definitely the best vocalist in rock. Now he
has something to really share with his 16 year old son. Even his
diehard-Neil-Diamond loving wife walks around the house singing "I'm so ugly,
that's okay 'cause so are you". She still can't deal with Soundgarden.

                                                                          The

more work to what I already have.

This is not a LISTSERV or LISTPROC operation I've scrapped together
here. That means that I process all subscribe and unsubscribe requests
by hand. When subscribe messages come from the Web page, I run a
script that goes through my inbox, selects those messages because they
all have the same subject, and adds whoever is in the "From:" fields
to the mailing list. This doesn't work if they want the digest. I do
those by hand. Same thing for unsubscribe messages. And the list
database here at MIT is case-sensitive. If I get an unsubscribe
message and one letter is in a different case than it was in the
original subscribe message, I have to hunt through the database to
find the person. (I know, whine, whine, whine...)

Dealing with maybe 30 or 35 sub/unsub requests per day, along with
archiving all of the somms messages for the digest is quite a pain in
the ass. (Have I generated any sympathy yet?)

I have a small script (that I stole from someone else and modified
slightly) that takes all of the messages from my 'somms' folder and
makes the digest, minus the unsubscribe messages that were sent to the
list, which I deal with as they come in and then delete. I then go
through the entire digest and strip all of the headers by hand. It
sucks knowing that no matter what I do, no matter what day it is, I
always have to come home and compile the digest. (Are you guys sobbing
yet?)

Believe it or not, I am a student, which means that from time to time
I have to do some work that's not related to the list or the Web page.
So while your suggestion is quite valid, and would probably help out a
great many people, I simply cannot devote the time. It's too much more
to deal with every day.

I apologize.

I'll wait until I get a few. I don't want to make one person
uncomfortable because his/her picture is the only one there.

So, Carolyn the Mystery Face will be revealed...

Subject: AIC Release Date

To anyone who cares: Addicted to Noise Online Magazine wrote that the
release date for the new AIC is on October 24. The first single is
called "Grind," they think the album may have the same title as they only
finished recording last Friday.

A new gardener here. I wanted to tell foreshocks that I too ordered back
issues from Spin (the Soundgarden issues) in the early summer and I got a
cancelled check but no rags. I sent them e-mail and haven't got any reply
yet.

Subject: The New Flame Rule...

Dear SOMMS readers,
Well, I posted a thing about OJ yesterday, and I posted a lot of messages
in a row. I had something to say, and the real Soundgarden fans were happy to
see it (well, happy to see the messages...not the OJ thing :)...). However, I
got a few flames from people that never post to the mailing list. Let's put
it this way, I have the guts to speak my mind, step out from behind my
keyboard, and talk about Soundgarden. I can make new friends, have side
conversations, and so on.
But, there are some people that are so high and mighty that they flame others
when they never even post to the mailing list. So, from now on, no one is
allowed to flame unless they post to the mailing list, it's only fair. You
have to say a few nice things so that people don't think you're a total jerk
before you are allowed to say a few bad things.
Just use this as a rule of thumb. I have read the rules for flaming, and I
agree with them. However, I don't agree with people that are willing to
flame, but not willing to post to the mailing list. If you plan on flaming in
the future, at least talk on the mailing list. You'll make more friends that
way, and you'll keep your faces from getting smashed in the next time we see
you.
