I was just writing to get others views on Chris and how between
Badmotorfinger & Superunknown the guy has changed his image and stage
behaviour to quite an extent. Obviously the major difference is his
hairstyle, from having it shaved he's now got it in a curly "mop"
style, he also does'nt seem to go on stage bare-chested anymore, plays
guitar on almost all the songs (instead of half) and is basically
motionless throughout the gig. This contrasts with how he was up to
Badmotorfinger, he played up the Metal Sex God comparisons, long
flowing hair, half naked on stage and in the videos and generally
acting like he has ants in his trousers all the time he was
performing. Is the reason for such a drastic change that he wants to
be taken seriously as a singer/songwriter and not as some Rock Bimbo
or is it that he just can't be bothered to give the whole rock
performance anymore, has he got boring?? I only ask as I saw them at
Reading and was well disappointed that the band (Chris esp) looked
dead bored by the whole thing, played mostly the slow ones and did'nt
seem to have the passion they had 2-3 years ago. Come on Chris go off
your ead'!!!

Subject: Suggestions

This is an open letter to everyone on the list, no flames involved, not
directed at anyone in particular.

Recent events on this mailing list have been a little bit disturbing to
me... far too many flamethrowers are being used and as I've said before, you
burn more than just the intended recipient. I am by no means perfect, but
I'm sure a lot of people are after more than flames, and I think we're all
above this, so can I put forward the following:

1. When offering your opinion on any topic, please think of the following:

   a. There are many who disagree with you
   b. Always give reasons for your opinion.
   c. Keep criticisms on the constructive level.
   d. Don't worry about anything, it's only a mailing list, even if it does
involve Soundgarden!
   e. Throw flamethrowers in the bin, if you really have something personal
with someone, contact them direct unless you REALLY think it involves the
whole group.
   f. Most importantly, respect anyone's well formed opinion, PLEASE?

2. When criticising/applauding bands, please think about:

   a. Why do you (dis)like the band (be a little in depth, eg. "Mike Patton
kicks ass" doesn't cut it!)
   b. Remember, there are people who (dis)like the band you're talking about
for very personal reasons
   c. If you've only heard a handful of songs, don't make a rash statement.

3. People always have a delete button if your message isn't strictly
applicable to them. A lot of people are on this list to learn a lot more
about the world than just Soundgarden. I enjoy hearing how other people
live, eg. through top ten lists, suggesting bands to listen to etc. etc. Be
receptive to people's requests and don't get too irritated at all the
requests for SG's new album/CD et. al.

4. Enjoy yourselves and learn a little. Be open minded!

I'm not saying I'm above anyone, hell, I've only been on this list for a
couple of months, but I've learnt a lot (but I'm still a LONG way behind!).
I think it's great to be joined to such a list and I like the characters
that have come through.

Back to your regularly scheduled program...All opinions and suggestions
gratefully accepted.

Attention Everyone!

It seems to me that some of the messages we see flying around here are
really of no interest to anyone besides the two or three people involved.
Can we maybe think of who we want to reply to... ie the sender or the entire
group, before we send things off? This will cut down on the time wasted
trying to pick through the garbage to find something that is interesting,
not to mention related to Soundgarden!
I know we all think that what we have to say is important but come on....
some of us want to stay in touch with fellow SG fans, but without having to
wade through a million messages that are really just a load of nonsense. I
mean, what would SG themselves say if they had to read the crap that comes
down this line? They would probably think we are a bunch of extremely sad
individuals.
Hey, some of you may think this is a bunch of crap........
Anyway, if this keeps up, I'm afraid I will be just another unsubscribe
message soon.

Just wodering...

What is the significance of the cover art for Superunknown? To look at it
right side up, you see the "Screaming Elf" image (or whatever, forgive my
ignorance). Turn it upside down, and you see the silhouette of a forest
against a white sky, with flames(?) burning below.

O.K., so I don't read a lot of music mags. Most of the info I get on SG and
other bands comes from the lists. (Read: Please don't flame me.)

Anyone?

does anyone have any cool Soundgarden stories? Like "I saw Soundgarden

Well, I gotta say it, it feels good to be wanted, if only just a little
 bit.

I also want to say, that I too, own both the Stone Temple Pilot albums
and I think they're quite impressive. I don't really care that they
might just sound like somebody else, I've not actually noticed this
myself, but let's face it, how many songs have you heard that sound
like others? I don't consider anything to be original, just the
collaboration of many influences moulded into one, and they're usually
very distintive, as is possibly the case here. Songs like "Creep" and
"Sex Type Thing" I consider very interesting songs, and if anyone's
heard "Kitchenware & Candy Bars" or "Big Empty" from the second album
I'm sure it might change a few opinion. As for Steven Russel Jr.'s
comment, it might just be easier to say "I don't like them" because
"NO talent copycat rip off artists" is somewhat unfair, if you're
gonna say something like that, then you really do need to justify it.

Did anybody go to the Reading festival? My friends just got back and
she said Soundgarden were very "average". It seemed like they just
turned up, played because they had to, and left. Did anybody else
 think this?

I don't consider myself abusive Little Joe, just someone capable of
opinion and willing to voice it, if you don't like it, you don't have
to read my mail. Like somebody said, I know I can't get my face on the
cover of Rolling Stone, believe me, I've tried, but does that mean my
opinion is any less than someone who might get in there? I mean after
all, why should fame make an opinion more important than another. The
points I make I consider valid, because you don't agree with them
doesn't make it invalid, somebody DID actually agree with my
"Seattle Top 10" comment, so how invalid is it now? If you don't
agree, say so, but please don't make a statement for everyone else on
 this list.

Oh yeah, and to set the record straight, it's Mr.

Someone (I think it was Chicka J.) asked where one might find a good place

geography-wise, don't you think?

It occurs to me that the only person who has revealed his location
explicitly is Mr. Listadmin -- from whose house I am now within walking
distance (but I ain't sayin' nuthin' more). From what I've gathered there
are people here from Australia, England, Mexico, Cleveland, Buffalo,
Chicago, possibly North Carolina, possibly Missouri, and Cambridge, MA.

I can only tell you what I know - and I don't know much - but I can hardly
conceive of a greater concentration of buy/sell/trade/used/new/"import" CD
shops than there is between Harvard and Central Squares in Cambridge, MA. I
count six within a five block stretch of Mass. Ave. So if you're in the
Boston area for a visit, this is the place to go shopping for all your
bootleg needs. Second Coming Records is the place to start.

From the Massachussetts Chamber of Commerce to you, via me.

By the way since it's the distribution center of the mailing list and home
to at least two of us (I ain't sayin' who), the logical site for any
gathering is obviously Cambridge.

I ain't sayin who, but it wasn't me.

First, those of you that have been moaning (bitching) about the lack of
soundgarden comments in this flame war over musical integrity. Please
delete this message now. It is not intended for you. go back to work.

NO talent copycat rip off artists is a completely fair statement to make
about STP. Why did they suddenly appear in 1992 copying a musical style
that just became popular. Where they playing this style of music before
Nirvana broke? NO! They were just another shitty butt rock band out on the
streets trying to make a nickel. Yes!! Then Nirvana and Pearl Jam hit
big....so they figured....god we can sound exactly like that. (Note grunge
isnt the hardest style to play. It's almost like the liverpool explosion of
the early 60's. All you need to play it is some instruments and the look).
Butt, these idiots in STP came out saying they were grunge before grunge was
grunge. They also made the idiotic statement that "we arent copying
anyone...we've always looked like this...and sounded like this since we
formed". come on. They heard the first notes of Pearl Jam's "alive" and
soundgarden's "flower", put on their flannel shirts and said we can do
this...but we're not that talented right now. We're gonna have to steal
there musical style note for note. That's were the money is. Then when the
major label's come a courtin, we'll get a record deal...because back in late
'91 if you sounded even remotely like a seattle band...you were signed. My
problem with STP is...they never told the truth about their beginnings. it
was all fabricated lies by them and the record company in order to swindle
the consumer to buy into the latest fad. Is it possible for them to
actually make a great album? yes. Will they ever do it? no The backlash
against them is so strong (cept in this mailing list) that there next album
will mark the beginning of the end for them..because their lack of talent is
starting to show (the only band that can continue to sell records without
changing 1 oz. of their sound is AC-DC). Think Weiland suddenly developed a
heroin habit because he has a chemical imbalence in his neurons...NO.. he
developed the heroin habit because he thought to gain creativity in the
music world, one must live the life of a junkie. As sad as it is...most
(not all) of the great writers/musicians of all time have been under the
influence of something. from rupyard kipling to kurt cobain. That friends
is plain stupid. It also signifies the end of Weiland and STP.

Feel free to email me and "JUSTIFY" STP's place in the musical world. You
havent given me a shred of evidence to "justify" their musical superiority.
Integrity means alot to me in the music biz. Soundgarden has it...STP
doesnt.

As for Silverchair. They are a bunch of immature 15 and 16 year olds
(actually all 15 and 16 years are immature. this is a statement of fact)
that have learned to copy a style of music. I'd like to see them grow into
talented musicians. But they are just a record company creation at the
moment. Do you think for one instant that they would of won that contest
(that supposably launched their careers) in australia if the lead singer
didnt look exactly like kurt cobain or if they didnt sound exactly like PJam
or Nirvana? They are just cashing in your parents paychecks by copying a
popular style. There is nothing wrong with this if your're still getting an
allowance from your parents. But in the real world...this is a major turn
off. If you think their style of music is superior to (pick a seattle
band)..you probably feel that McCauley Culkin should of won an oscar for his
work in _Home Alone_.

ps. spell my fuckin' name right.

Hey guys , what is going on ? This list is on E-mail so we can , and I
do stress the word "can" say whatever the hell we want to . I strongly , check
that , vehemently agree that some things are a little hard to discuss ( ie SG
is shit by you know who ) and some that are worthy of discussion ( ie the kind
of guitars and drums , etc that SG uses ) . I think that being afraid of the
flame should not keep one's opinion from being known . Fellow Gardeners , speak
your mind so that we will not be forced into censorship based on the opinions
of the majority . Do not apologize for what you said but rather for how it was
misconstued or misinterpreted . Take the following example :
Let's say that someone in the band SG thought that they were shit .
Chances are that it ain't going to happen , but let's say that it does . Will
they get flamed for their view of themselves ? Of course not . Why ? Because of
who they are .

This just goes to show you that everything deserves to be put to a test and
that all opinions , even those that are mundane , silly or even about PJ .

With this I implore ya'll ( you really can't tell that I am
from Texas can you ?) to go and be free to say what you want .

And to all of ya'll , speak your opinion even if it is a flame .
And to all who get flamed , keep on coming because if the flamers got the gas
to flame then you too can put out your own opinion .

You know what, I was feeling kinda happy today, but fuck it, Steven
Russell Jr. I think I'll just tear you to pieces. Flamethrower on,
I love myself, I really do.

Okay, it's a very fair statement, this "NO talent copycat rip off
artist", I mean, yeah, it's kinda catchy but unfortunately I don't
agree. I really am very disapointed in your ability to judge music,
with comments like "grunge is not the hardest style to play" and "all
you need to play it is instruments and the look". Where the fuck do
you come in on the scale? Is it that easy that your very own band are
riding high on the current music scene? Nobody said anything about
"superiority", they are your own compositions, they just happen to be
a band I like, and in my opinion, no better or worse than any other, I
haven't actually noticed any resemblence to any Pearl Jam or Nirvana
record, but then again, I'm not going to compare them. If your
record collection evolves around musical integrity it must be a very
small collection, it's kinda hard finding something original these
days, although I did once see a band play using only the most
distasteful bodily noises, quite unique I thought.

I think you might of been better with the one I gave you, the "I don't
like them" one, because in all honesty, you talk a fair amount of shit.

Subject: My Story

Ok, it goes a little like this.
Picture it: Rochester, 1994. The day was June 14th, two days after
Nicole Simpson and Ron Goldman were found dead outside a condo in
California. I couldn't care less about that; I was going to see
SOUNDGARDEN. I was in Rochester, and I had a hundred dollars in my
pocket, reserved exclusively for T-shirts. I was only 15 at the time,
and I didn't know anyone of driving age that would drive 220 miles to
see Soundgarden (I live in Albany), so my dad drove me. (Thanks Dad! The
best experience of my life.) Thank god he didn't insist on going into
the concert with me... being young sucks. So I left my house pretty
early, because it was a long drive to Rochester. I ended up getting to
the War Memorial (where Soundgarden was playing) around 3. I didn't feel
like sitting in the car for four hours, so I went for a little walk
around the War Memorial. I walked up the side past a few tour buses, and
all these big burly asshole security guards (I HATE security guards)
were standing around in yellow shirts. I walked past a tour bus and one
of these security guard dudes held out his hand to keep me from going
further down the sideawlk. So I stopped and this woman in a business
suit got off the bus.. I'm not sure who it was but I believe it was
Susan Silver... so then after she got off the bus and I walked up the
sidewalk and then turned around and walked back down and something made
me stop dead in my tracks: Who else was I staring at twenty feet away
getting off one of the buses but Kim Thayil? I almost shit my pants. I
stood there, simply drooling. Then I completely forget what happened for
the next minute (I think I blacked out or something) but then I saw the
back of Kim walking side by side with CHRIS CORNELL into the War
Memorial... and I'm still kicking myself to this day over this.. I WAS
TOO CHICKENSHIT TO SAY ANYTHING TO THEM!!! ARG!!!! I was afraid Kim and
Chris would be pissed off by autograph hounds, I'd never met someone who
I held in high regards like Soundgarden before and I was terrified.
Plus, I was scared to death of getting my ass kicked by those asshole
security guards if I approached them. Oh.. BTW.. The outfit I saw Chris
wearing when he was walking into the War Memorial with Kim.. this
flannel shirt... well, he was wearing the same thing on the Headbanger's
Ball Soundgarden guested on right after thay played New York City. I
dont know why, but I think that's kind of cool.
I KNOW I KNOW I'M A TOTAL IDIOT FOR PASSING UP SUCH A GREAT CHANCE! I'M
STILL KICKING MYSELF FOR NOT SAYING ANYTHING TO CHRIS AND KIM! ARG!
I'll always remember that day though.. "The Day I Shared A Sidewalk With
Soundgarden Just Before I Saw Them Play And Totally Rock The House And
Damn I Was Too Chickenshit To Say Anything To Chris And Kim (SIGH)."
p.s. Did anyone like the reference to the Golden Girls at the beginning?
I love that show..

Well, this is my first submission after months of voyeurism (if I spelled

on some of the things being said and my Soundgarden experiences... I am a
proud owner of; Screaming Life, FOPP, Ultramega OK, Loudest Love, Louder
Than Love, Badmotorfinger, SuperUnknown (with She Likes Surprises),
Spoonman single CD (with Jesus Christ Pose and Beyond the Wheel, live),
Spoonman 12" single on clear vinyl with Exit Stonehenge, the SuperUnknown
LP on 2 orange vinyls and a poster by a man named Frank Kozik of a Pearl Jam
(whoopee-fricken-doo) and Soundgarden concert... great fucking poster!

I had the pleasure of seeing Soundgarden at Lollapolooza 1992 (Irvine
Meadows, CA) and at the Grand Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles (1994).
For the 1994 tour I had purchased balcony seats but swindled my way onto
the floor with a wristband and everything. To make a long story short...
I touched Chris Cornell. YES, TOUCHED!! Skin to skin. He jumped off the
stage to yell at some idiot with a flashlight... there, 2 feet before me
stood Chris Cornell, I could not control my arm, it moved towards him
through no volition of my own. I have lived a complete life (I'm 23).
I will take up no more of your time. Thank you. God (Chris) be with you!

Okay, this whole Steve versus Stacy fight has gone far enough. The two
of you obviously have irrenconcilable differences in your opinions
about the right to judge music. Well, fine. So be it. This is,
however, sometimes a Soundgarden list. While there is a small core of
us who have become almost like "family" (I guess around 10 of us), I
doubt that the other 279 subscribers want to hear us bicker endlessly
like sibling rivals. I'm not saying you shouldn't flame people; as has
been pointed out, flames are sometimes interesting. But a fight like
this between two people really should be kept between those two
people. Hey, if you don't agree, flame me. Send your flames to ME.

Everyone has the right to his/her opinion. It's only when you come
across sounding like your opinion is the _right_ opinion that it
begins to get on the nerves of the other list members.

People, just be cool. Relax.

Attention new subscribers: don't be scared off by all the oldtimers
with flamethrowers. Please post. Post something about Soundgarden.

Hey, I hear the position of listadmin is opening up...anyone
interested?

Just kidding, of course. I wouldn't trade this for, um, the world.

I would have to agree. I got the "Louder than Live" promo 12" from
Second Coming Records. I got two 7" bootlegs at In Your Ear Records. I
think I got my second copy of Badmotorfinger/SOMMS at Second Coming.
I got the "Jesus Christ Pose" 12" with poster sleeve at either Looney
Tunes or Second Coming. I've never quite been able to afford bootlegs,
but they are plentiful around here.

Yes, yes. I'll go so far as to say that some of us actually appreciate a
little sexual ambiguity in our bands. It's rare to find a band that's
comfortable enough to be blatantly queer-positive (like, for example, Pansy
Division). Considering the potential impact on their financial success,
I can't really say that I blame them. But we FOD's take what we can
get. And I'm pleased that SG doesn't always sing blatantly straight
material. Am I the only one, or is "Big Dumb Sex" more than just a
little gay-friendly?

While I'm here, on the topic of Seattle bands, has anyone out there ever
heard of Flop? I've seen 'em live a couple of times - talk about
energy! Fast, rockin' songs, not quite in the same vein as all the other
Seattle bands. Also, how about the Posies? Actually, they're from Bellingham,
WA (which is where I went to undergrad school). Also not your typiceal run-of-

Hmmmm...that's true. Punk is power chords though, it's good, and I'm not
discrediting it, because it's an entire style of music, but it's a lot
simpler to actually play the chords than what Kim has to go through. Of

Opinions are what you think, not what is right or wrong. The purpose of

I think someone suggested a while ago that Chris is not as young as he used
to be. It happens to a lot of lead singers, they throw themselves around in
their youth but as they grow older eg. past their twenties (don't get me
wrong, I'm not saying they're past it!), their bodies start to not
appreciate being thrown around so much to the point that they begin to
sustain physical injuries.

Just my thoughts. I'd rather see him on stage (which I haven't yet!)
standing up and moving a little than to see him perform from a wheelchair :)

Silverchair are an interesting case - I too believed that they were a
rip-off when I saw their first single "Tomorrow", but beyond that I see some
originality coming into the group. Hopefully this continues, I found it
interesting for them to comment on issues in the Middle East (in their song
"Pure Massacre"), and I only hope that they will define a sound that is
Silverchair's. Whilst not liking their current release Frogstomp, I
appreciate that the lead singer's voice is very good (and deep) for a 15y.o.

Which countries/areas were lucky enough to get She Likes Surprises on their

I'll have a go for you greg. the picture on the front of
superunknown is a twofold sorta thing. the big one is the band picture.
it didn't strike me first off as a picture of four guys, but if you look

When I saw SG last year, the first thing to catch my eye was the bald
spot on Kim Thayil's head. I thought it was a pretty cool bald spot.
Has anyone else noticed this great wonder? The should use it for an
album cover - hey, their next album could be called "Bald Spot!", pretty
nifty title, eh? Or maybe Kim Thayil could do a solo project and call it
that.

Newsflash. I heard that Soundgarden have been confirmed for a concert on
new years eve at Macquirie Uni here in Oz. Apparently it would be an outdoor
thing with about 20000 people, plus support is to come by Sonic Youth.
This may be untrue but i hope not. I'll have to start working out and
practising my air guitar and sing alongs in preparation. Hopefully the
new album will be out by then. They might have to play for four hours to
fit in all their great songs:)
Please God let it be true.

The goal of the t-shirt should be to represent somms, the mailing list,
and not to be YASGT (yet another SG tee). I certainly hope
'badmotherfucker' doesn't best characterise this list (although I have

I'm talking about. STP had the same chance of succes in '89. as Rancid

Why can't you comprehend that two bands that never seen eachother,
never heard eachother's music can sound alike? Why doesn everyone have
to be someone else's copycat? Only 5 people in one group have the right
to sound in a certain way and be true about it, all others have to be
copycats?

Ty Cobb played for the Detroit Tigers in the beginning of the century
and still has the highest lifetime batting average (.367) of any
player to ever play in the major leagues. He was also one of the most
despicable people to ever play the game. Besides being an outspoken
racist, womanizer, and alcoholis, he was known to sit in the dugout
and sharpen the spikes on his cleats to a razor's edge. Quite a few
infielders left the game with bloody shins when Cobb slid into base,
spikes first. So, I think that gives Soundgarden some material to work
with.

As for the Rolling Stone issue, is this the newest one? With Red Hot
Chili Peppers on the cover? The one I threw out before perusing?

I have to say that Silverchair has accomplished a lot considering their
ages. I mean I'm about their age and I haven't landed a big record deal
or anything. Anyway, in my opinion they aren't that horrible of a band.
I mean they aren't that great or bad or amazingly musically talented but
they are young and have a lot of time to grow musically. Maybe in a
couple of years by their 3rd or 4th album they'll have come to a level
where I can truly respect them. But right now, although their lead
singers voice IS very good I really can't listen to them.

ps. I personally like Pure Massacre more than Tomorrow.

It was on the double-vinyl version of _Superunknown_ that was released

Hi friends and foes (hopefully, I don't have many foes... :) )...

Hate to bother everyone again, but I had to mention something that's
been bothering me. In the wake of the mushroom cloud hovering above
Stacy.Meyrick's head from the severe beating we've all been laying on
him, I've noticed people trying to say that some people's opinions are
more or less important than others. Nothing could be further from the
truth.

Do I feel that my opinion is more 'important' than that of Chris
Cornell?? No.
No more so than I feel Cornell's opinion is more 'important' than
mine. What I mean to say is that you can't place a level of importance
on what someone thinks... they're thoughts. You can't rate them.
Everyone has something to say, and they have the right to think what
they wish: it's a fact of life.

Chris isn't more "important" because he's the lead singer/rhythm
guitarist of Soundgarden, a "superstar" rock quartet. He's just a
man. So is Matt. So is Ben. And so is Kim (sex change...hahahaha! :)
). I'm a man, too, and my opinion can carry just as much weight as
Mr. Cornell's. And I'm sure Chris would agree with me.

Thanks for listening,

being hungover, but genuinely ill - bring out your violins now) so had to
stay home from work. Today I'm not a lot better, and WOW just what I DON'T
need to get me back on track was all the somms messages regarding flames,
bitching, Silverchair, etc. etc. etc.!!!!!

I still haven't had a chance to read them all yet, but decided I'd better
post something to try and quell all the bad vibes out there.

There are more things in life than to publicly humiliate/scorn/hurt people,
you know!! Like listening to LOUD music, driving fast cars, eating (wo -
not today perhaps, I'm still pretty nauseous right now), drinking & being
merry, lazing in the sun, swimming in the sea, going to see your favourite
band, breathing in some fresh country air...........................

I suggest that Steven Russell (yes I spelt it right, Steve) and MR Meyrick
(if you'd read one of his postings he did let us know he's a he so no need
to call him he/she anymore) in future speak to each other privately and not
to the whole group, UNLESS it's something we'll wanna hear. Ya hear?? This
is NOT to mean I dislike Steve & Stacy - most of you know that I'm a pretty
relaxed kind of girl with not a bad attitude - just that I reckon they'd
both have more of a chance of settling their differences in private and not
with the rest of us as witnesses.............

Okay, that's my two bob's worth for now.

BUT - you'll be sure to hear from me again in the not too distant future!

Subject: is CC Jesus' twin?

Howdy, I know this may sound a tad pointless but I was just sitting at my
computer, trying extremely unsuccessfully to finish an essay that was due
in 2 days ago when a thought popped into my head. Does anyone think that
Chris looks a tad like Jesus, (yes, that's right, the Son of God and all
that jazz) on the inside of the Badmotorfinger cover? I'm not implying
that CC is God's nephew or anything (but he could be a distant cousin),
but I just thought it was interesting.

I must say that even when we're on the south edge, Mexico is still North A=
merica (we're together in NAFTA remember?). The CD wasn't manufactured here=
however. The country of origin was in a label on the plastic wrap so it's =
gone. =
