Australian's might know them, but they might not link them with Soundgarden
- - I really like Caligula, mainly 'cos of the keyboardist - he knows what
keyboards and samplers are for! Caligula's album Rubenesque I found to be
really excellent but many may not like their style - they're a bit of techno
with a hard-core 16-beat rhythm and screaming guitar

I like 'em!

Ha. My votes weren't counted because I didn't pick Seattle bands in my
top 10, I didn't realise I had to restrict my own musical tastes, and
oh, what a choice there is. I don't even think I have 10 albums by
Seattle bands. How about a new top 10, say, for example, the best 10
albums that happened to be released in February and on a day when it
rained. Just as pointful if you ask me, but whatever.

And yes, EJ Fry, the Levellers are a fine band. Unfortunately, they
don't come from Seattle so they don't count, apparently. Oh, my
grant's not through yet so you'll have to make do with the plaque
below, a bit cheap I know. If you still want purple, use a permanent
marker on the screen, it should work.

I have always enjoyed two totally different types of bands combining to create
something new. Or the occasional jointing of two bands that span a time
difference (i.e., Zep and Arrowsmith). There is always the rock band joining
with a classical back up (i.e., Deep Purple and the London Symphony or Guns N'
Roses on December Rain (no I do not like Guns N' Roses - and that's strictly
personality reason - any man that takes pride in hitting a women - is shit)).
So who do we joint our beloved SG with - Plant and Cornell??? Kim going one on
one with Page???? How about SG and Black Sabbath. Big jump SG with
Seal!!!!!!!!!

Well, I must say that one silly line in a posting sure did something. I
received close to 250 responses from old and new member of the list. The last
few days has seen some really good input from new people. Please keep it
coming. Won't it be great when SG does put out a new CD and starts touring -
we will have so much to talk about - and as you all know I love to talk and
talk and talk (I'm like that bunny in the battery commercial) - only cuter.

>Who are you trying to punish? Us! By depriving us of your posts! How cruel!

Thank you Jovica and all the rest of you that posted kind words to me on this
subject.

Jamie

PS: I liked the idea about the Tee's for our mail list - I'll take two - one
medium to wear and one X-large to sleep in.

PSS: I also must thank all the response to my Help posting - I will try each
and everyone of them - I did try one thing - did you know that all the lights
in an apartment complex will go out if you touch one of those bare wire to a
wall outlet????? You all have know me long enough to tell you - my life tends
toward the I love Lucy type world. How many people do you know get locked in a
car wash (I did get the window shut before the third pass of the soap spray -
it's hard to roll up a window when it's covered with soap). And like I told
the Secret Service guys - If you didn't want me in the Oval Office - you
shouldn't have left the door open. And I really could have gotten that First
Aid instructor untied if my finger hadn't been stuck in the bottle. And one
last thing - it is not true that the local gas station have a letter out
stating I can't pump my own gas - that was just a simple accident with the gas
pump - really.

Luv you all

Great idea, but this months CD would not sit well with most of you - but, if
you must know....

A Beautiful Word (it's a new age type CD - heavy on the drums and lyrics that
move the world) - again I know it is not most of your taste - it can found in
Ergo type stores "Natural Wonders" "Nature Company". You do know the pallet
must be cleans before each course - Last month I played White Zombie to death,
this month Beautiful World, next maybe a new SG.

OK, is one word a lyric - I think so - Chris gives so much feeling to this one
word in the song, it's soft and low, almost dark, you could almost miss it -
but that one word tells you more than all the I'm gonna in the song. It's not
listed on any of the lyric pages either.

What irritetes me, and what I'm talking about is your attitude towards

I can't speak for the other on this list, but I'm here because I work in a

That's actually a tough one to answer...

First of all, both of their voices are so strong, I'm not so sure how well they
would work together.

Second of all, their writing styles are so different. Cornell is
typically dark and filled with rage, Plant is more fantasy. The times
I've seen Plant try to sing really "hard", I wasn't too impressed.

Now that I think about it though, maybe something bluesy would work well.

Comments, compliments, flames???

Greg

B.T.W. I don't want to hear how I'm an idiot for not liking Plant or
Zeppelin. Believe me, I am in awe of both.

No, flames here, your right on the money. I have said it before and I'll say
it again. Both men have great voices and write well (I do think that Chris is
better than Plant - for the reason you have stated Chris is more real world and
Plant is fantasy). Plant can handle the slower type music, his voice does not
lean toward the hard and gut sound that Chris can produce. Blues would be a
good road for these two to travel together - maybe an old Muddy Waters number?

Hey EJ,
I love tool's Undertow but I have another album by them that is
better. It might be Opiate I don't know because I got it taped for me on
a blank tape and the person who gave it to me (actually he left it in my
car) never wrote the name of it. Anyway it has a bunch of cool songs like
"You are just a Part of me", and one that has a chorus that goes Jesus
Christ why don't you come save my life... Anyway I just got this live
Pearl Jam album that is absolutely incredible! In fact I just saw them in
New Orleans and they fuckin' kicked ass! They even had Joey Ramone come
on stage and sing with Eddie! This album isn't a bootleg(it sounds too
good but it is an import so my friend paid a lot for it) This may be that
type of C.D. that will be in my system for weeks!

Here's an odd one. What about Matt and Carlos Santana? What kind of latin
rythms do you think Matt could lay down? (O.K., this one may be a little
wierd, but I've always loved the passion that seems to eminate from Carlos.)

Come to think of it, how about Matt and Tito Puente (I hope I spelled that
right)?

Better yet, Matt, Carlos, and Tito. All instrumental. No lyrics to get in
the way?

EJ's TOP TEN (for this week, at least)
NOTE: Notice there are no Pink Floyd, Zep, Jimi, Clapton, Mozart,
Tchaikovsky,Rossini, etc. albums, for they are God-sent and too divine to
be soiled by being put on some mere list.

SO, in no particular order:

10-PRIMUS "Frizzle Fry" My boys from the Bay Area back when they sung
about weird things like too many puppies, pudding time, some kid named
John, some guy named Harold, and toys that wind down.

9-HASH self-titled. Nobody knows about these guys. Why? They're
awesome. The song Mr. Hello is enough to make you get all hot and
bothered...ummm...yeah.

8-ALICE IN CHAINS "SAP" You know why this is on my list, if not, buy
this disc NOW.

7-JANE'S ADDICTION "Nothing's Shocking" No explination needed for this
one.

6- LAUNDRY "Blacktongue" This is Herb's (Primus drummer) alter-ego
band, and they are incredible. I dont know what a chapman stick is, but
it sounds like a bass and it kicks ass. So does Herb. A lot.

5- CHARLIE HUNTER TRIO self-titled This is their album before they got
signed to Blue Note. Again, they're from the Bay Area. I love Bay Area
bands. Can you guess where I'm from????

4- TOOL "Opiate" Truly, this is better than the one everybody knows,
"Undertow". Honestly! Two live tracks sound like studio perfection.
The song Opiate, however, is not for Christian types. Why? TOOL don't
like Chritians. I like TOOL.

3- JOHN McLAUGHLIN "Live at the Royal Festival Hall" I'm trying to keep
jazz from this list, but this is too good to pass up. My boy Trilok Gurtu
is one of the best drummers I've ever heard in my life. You have not
heard what good drumming is until you hear this man play.

2- SOUNDGARDEN "Superunknown" and "Badmotorfinger" and "Louder Than Love"

1- see number 2

i would feel left out if i didn't throw in my change into the "top 10"
basket.....first of all, its not a seattle top 10 list, cause i probably
dont know 10 seattle albums, and even if i do, they arent all my favorites.
second, they're not all from the same category of music........so if you are
a dedicated "alternative" person (and please note my extreme sarcasm), you
probably wont care what i have to say. but if you have an open an educated
ear for good music, both lyrically and instrumentally, then you may or may
not have heard these bands, but you should: (granted, some are gimmes):

1. FREEDY JOHNSTON-------This Perfect World-------I have yet to find one
person outside from my group of friends who has ever heard of this album, or
even knows who Freedy Johnston is.....it is by and far the most original,
thoughtful, and poetic album i have ever heard.........if you have heard
of it, PLEASE email me-----im lonely.......if you havent, please buy
it....if you are a human being with thoughts and emotions, you will love
this disc.
2. INDIGO GIRLS-------Rights of Passage--------call me a pussy or a lesbian
if you like, but if you enjoy lyrically deep music and good voices..........
3.SOUNDGARDEN........Badmotorfinger..........that's a gimme
4. THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS-------Flood--------if you like to be happy.......
which more people shoud be!!!!stop being so repressed!!!!!
5. PEARL JAM..........Unnecessary Roughness (IMport)......for PJ fans, a
must.........
6. JIMMY BUFFETT-------Greatest Hits------I like to drink beers to this
disc...if you like something else, fine.
7. OFFSPRING-------Smash---------if you want to dismiss them as sellouts,
youre missing out on a punk band that actually has something to say.....
8. NOTORIOUS BIG------Ready to Die--------probably not many rap fans here,
but........
9. 311------Music---------Like the Beastie Boys, on a Violent Femmes
tip.....very cool
10. DADA--------Puzzle--------if you dig the beatles at all, this is cool.

There, i've said it, and of course, this is all recent music, because all
time top 10s would probably include none of these, giving way to the doors,
dylan, zeppelin, etc.......if you've heard of any of these bands (except the
gimmes), email me with info......if you dont like my list, tough.........

Hey list!

My views of Stone Tempah Peirgos will never change(unless they actually
make a halfway decent album). They are a bunch of NO talent copycat rip
off artists only in the biz to make a buck. They have NO talent (repeated for
a reason) and should never be uttered in the same breath as Soundgarden. Dont
worry those of you that cant stand STP, they wont be around much longer.
(think spin doctors)

Have you ever put the guitar riffs to vaseline and SG's "she's a politician"
together? Why did they even bother to change a little bit. They basically
stole the entire thing.

Have you done the same thing with SG's Flower and Helmet's "In the Meantime"?

Just picked up a promo copy of Mark Arm's new band "Bloodloss". If you
like Mudhoney you'll like it. Imagine those 60's cop flicks soundtracks
juiced up with some good old seattle grunge. (mudhoney was the only real
grunge band anyway...) throw in some surfer music and start doing the
monkee...Jamie might know what I'm talking about.

Got a surprise in the mail from the folks at Geffen records over the
weekend. Seems I won some contest (my first actually). I won the entire
Sonic Youth CD and video collection. One of the video's was a copy of
SY's _1991 the year punk broke_. I highly suggest that you see it. The
SY CD's are pretty cool. I saw them open for Neil YOung back during the
Gulf War. They basically confused the shit out of Neil's audience. Back
to the SY CD's...the new album is OK. I wish I got the package earlier.
It was recieved at my house 2 weeks before the general public got a hold
of the regular CD....lastly, the thurston moore solo CD is quite good.
It's especially good because part of the contest winnings included
thurston signing it! Anyone else ever win something similar to this?

comments: to the person who repeated the beavis n buttmunch quote about
STP, Very good....I cant stop laughing becasue I saw that episode...your
quote reminded me of it....LOLOL!

Anyone got the capacities to actually make T-shirts? We really should
get something printed up. Artists on this list...submit your works of
art to Seth. He can put them somewhere on the website...maybe? That is
a good idea to wear them at future SG concerts. I'll be at the Toronto,
Buffalo (vacinity) and Cleveland shows (work schedule permitting). Maybe
I should actually send Seth a picture for the member directory
list...hmmmmm......

I'd still like to see my Kyle Petty, Son of Richard idea that I posted a
couple of months ago to a.m.s

Lastly, they've come to a verdict in the OJ Simpson case. Now's your
chance to make a prediction. The verdict will be read at 1pm EST
tomorrow. I say the jury will find him not guilty.

This is the kind of stuff that you can't really argue about. Someone
has to set a standard and you have to expect that subsequent musical
attempts will be based on that standard, even if it means copying it
verbatim. Just take comfort in the knowledge that whoever set the
standard is the real talent. Musicians and composers have been
stealing from each other since the beginning of time, and if you look
hard enough, you can convince yourself that virtually nobody creates
an original work. Some are more creative in their thefts than others:
there is a song by the Doors that contains a huge segment from Aaron
Copland's "Billy the Kid", but for some reason, I find merit in this,
because I think the Doors had some talent. And then, like you say,
there are artists who rip off other artists because their own talent
(or lack thereof) is inadequate, which I find intolerable.

Having heard only STP's first album, I would also classify them as a
contemptible ripoff band. If I were to hear their newer efforts, maybe
I would change my mind.

Hey, good idea. Send me a picture. And all of you people out there
better send me pictures as well. As for T-shirt artwork, send that to
me too, and I will put it on another Web page so we can all look at
it. In fact, to make it fair, I won't associate anyone's name with
his/her artwork so it can be judged objectively. Hey, the artwork
doesn't even have to be something you want to see on a T-shirt. It
would be cool just to see some kind of Soundgarden image that each of
you create (whether it be a scanned drawing or painting or a
computer-generated graphic).

Did I mention that the member directory is at

	http://www.sgi.net/soundgarden/list/

Look at it. Send me pictures.

I'll have a go john. and how are exams looking, btw :)

I read that they wrote big dumb sex because they were tired of
bands like aerosmith, ac/dc and motley crue writing songs with sexual
innuendo type lyrics, where they don't literally say that they want to
jump someone's bones (sorry). where they just skirt around the issue,
like aerosmith with their song 'big ten inch...record'.

so they wrote big dumb sex, a song that could not be
misconstrued. so I guess that they aren't deep and meaningful lyrics at
all. but hiro was in the band then, and he didn't like to play the song,
because of it's (sorry again) cock rock overtones.

maybe overtones was the wrong word to use :) but anyway, that is
supposed to be their comedy song. I don't particularly like it, but I've
heard them do big bottoms, and that is a crack up.

because they like to just turn up, sit around, come on and play, watch
everyone else and talk to their friends. it would be a lot less

but perhaps most important of all, the source said that the band

Look at it this way. SG was young when they first signed in Sub Pop. SUB
POP!!! Not Capitol (Silverchair is on Cap, right?) or A&M for that matter.
Live signed on Radio-Active for their first album. NKOTB signed on...oh who
the fuck cares.

Silverchair has been thrown to the top faster than Gomer Pyle can say
"Schzam" because they were rambunctious teen-agers that wanted to see what it
was like at the top. Soundgarden signed on Sub Pop, then SST, BEFORE they
signed on A&M. Geffen, A&M, and Sony were knocking on Soundgarden's doors
after they released Screaming Life. "Nope, give us a while." SG said. They
came out with Fopp, A&M, Geffen, and Sony (with joint effort from Capitol
too) said "Sign on us!!! We'll give you BIIIIG bucks!!!" and SG said,
"Uhhhh...nope. We want to find out for ourselves what the industry is like."
so they went to SST for UltramegaOK.
David Geffen...the little fag...said "Nope, if you're gonna turn away from
us, then wer're turning away from you."
Sony said..."Hey, if you're not gonna take our offer, the buzz off. Good
luck."
Capitol said..."You know what? FORGET IT!!! DEAL'S OFF!!!"
A&M said..."Good idea. That's pretty smart of you, actually. We're still
available once you put out this album, so let's keep in touch, and if you're
still intrested, so are we."

That, my friends, is A) Why SG is on A&M and B) What sets the boys apart from
most other groups.

Well, the one thing about them is they're a punk band...even if it's not
obvious. Punk is a few power chords, so a three string'll do, and a two
string bass'll do also because you can hit the important notes.

Subject: The other day...

The other day i went into Monster ecords on Franklin street and i saw
"Ultramegaunknown". It was 30 bucks. i looked in my wallet. i didn't
have even have 30 bucks to eat with for the rest of the week.
"Ultramegaunknown" is now hidden in the store where only i (and maybe
trained cd-sniffing police dogs) can find it. But i still don't get to
listen to it. I miss being in high school. (Sighing in a Leonard Cohen
afterlife), j

Subject: Tired of top tens...

Well, i usually like to know other peoples opinions, especially on music,
and for the first 35 Top ten lists, i enjoyed reading them, but i'm
getting to the point now where i really don't care how other people rate
music. It's like Hootie and the Blowfish. I really can't criticize them
as a band, but at the same time i have had my fill of their music. So,
um unless there is something unconventional to say, when will the top ten
lists end? (Expecting 249 flames), j

Hi All,
Tried to send this off a while ago but the mail box was full.
Yes, sorry, I meant Larry Mullins Jnr. Derr!!!
Jackhammer - I think Outshined is in 7/4 or at least the verse is.
The Amiga Advertiser - Precisely my point about the negative use of
'commercial'. Thank you.
Top ten albums...this is hard!

John Coltrane - Coltranes Sound
Died Pretty - Doughboy Hollow
Nick Cave - The Good Son
Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger
Hunters & Collectors - Ghost Nation
The Cure - Distinegration
The Church - Preist = Aura
Swervedriver - Raise
Jeff Buckley - Grace

I'm going to hate myself for this but if I was stuck with these albums I
could survive.

Best live bands:
The Young Gods, Grant Lee Buffalo, Hunters & Collectors, U2, Beasts Of
Bourbon, Smashing Pumpkins, You Am I, Nirvana, Spy vs Spy, Front End Loader.
I've seen some of these bands many times. They all did ONE shoe that blew
me away. Unfortunately, Soundgarden failed to deliver on both occasions I
saw them.

Bands to look out for:
You Am I, Front End Loader, Big Heavy Stuff, Pollyanna, Budd, Crow.

See ya
RICH.

Subject: Stacy Meyrick

Do we really need Stacy Meyrick on this list?
It's a tough choice to reduce to just 10 all the fine albums that have
come out of Seattle.
It seems Mr/Miss Meyrick can't tackle any subject put up on this list
without finding some way of turning it into an abuse fest. It's not a
matter of restricting your musical taste, it's more a matter of reading
the question. Who cares if you don't like the category, it was only meant
to be fun.

Just one final point for you Stacy. Your opinion isn't as important as Chris
Cornell's and for that matter anyone else's on this, I don't think it
even rates as intelligent comment, all it ever is is mouthing off. Grow
up, and get some musical knowledge before you come with your arrogance again.
