i made a log file of the lyrics to this song off the www page, and it
interprets one of the lines as saying "driving round like spaceships on
mall tires.." umm... i don't know about anyone else... but bald tires
makes a whole lot more sense to me than mall tires... I dunno, i love
soundgarden and everything but I'm not half the expert i wish i was, but
has this occurred to anyone else?

Subject: exclusive photo of Chris Cornell
From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

A photographer who was at this year's Lowlands Festival contacted me
and offered me one of the pictures he took of Chris Cornell, saying
that he would be honored if I were to put it on the Web page. Well,
far be it from me to turn down such a flattering request, so you can
see it at:

	http://www.sgi.net/soundgarden/images/jan.html

By the way, the inline JPEG is just a resizing of the GIF that he
emailed to me. You can get the GIF itself by clicking on the JPEG, but
I warn you, it's 1.14 megabytes. For artistic reasons, I will not
resize it.

On the bright side, it's by far the best image I have available, so if
you have a fast connection, or are willing to spend the time, please
download it. The small JPEG does not do the picture justice.

Also, the photographer is selling originals, if you want to buy one
(or many). The prices are on the Web page, as is a form to fill out
and submit so he can contact you with more details.

First. Seth, get SOME SLEEP!

Second. What is it that compels us to come to this place and yap, yap, yap
about four guys we don't even know? I mean, I understand why I'm here. I
have absolutely nothing to do all day and all night, and I can't peel my
face off of this computer screen. But we can't all be so idle? Or can we?

I apologize for having such audacity to question the meaning of it all
after only being here a few days, it's just that I've been thinking,

Many a hand has scaled the grand old face of the plateau
Some belong to strangers and some to folks you know
Holy ghosts and talk-show hosts are planted in the sand
Beautify the foothills shake the many hands

Nothing on the top but a bucket and a mop
and and illustrated book about birds
You'll see a lot up there but don't be scared
Who needs actions when you've got words

Finish with the mop and you can stop and look at what you've done
The plateau is clean, no dirt to be seen and the work, it was fun

Salutations from the plateau (Them's MeatPuppets lyrics by the way)

you betcha...

NUDESWIRL - (self titled) released a few years ago on the `megaforce'
label, i think...incredible guitar layering and some prime-time
musical arrangments. features some of the finest use of feedback and
harmonics that i've ever heard. good schtuff...

THE URGE - (magically delicious, receiving the gift of flavor) like
the bosstones? wish they had a little more soul blended with punkish
guitars? the urge is for you. ska-core-funk-metal-rap-punk goodness.
a live show to die for.

MY BLOODY VALENTINE (loveless) - i know many people have probably heard of
this band, but certainly not enough...kevin shields (bandleader) is the
master of `ambient' guitar melodies. it takes a while to get used to
their recording style (very `airy' sounding, tinny at times,
light vocals you can't understand) but it's really grown on me, that's
for sure.

STICK (heavy bag) - wow. possibly my favorite live band on the face of
the earth. (they recently added a new drummer who doesn't appear on
this album--unfortunately--their old one was kind of weak)
heavy, screaming guitars and politi-punk type lyrics sung with style.
fans of sg, helmet, and black flag should definitely check this out.

KILL CREEK (stretch, st. valentine's day garage) - nifty guitar work
and all-around tight melodies. the vocals sometimes leave a little to
be desired, but good listening overall.

sorry to take up so much space, but these bands are too damn good to
ignore.

oh yeah...soundgarden is a nice band. (there, i said something about
sg)

i didn't see the original post calling for `seattle top tens', but the
one i saw and responded to asked for `top ten albums by seattle
bands.'

i included the prez's of the usa album.

i finally broke down and bought it and it is phenomenal. loopy, screwy
lyrics with some nifty instrumentation. (2-string bass, 3-string
guitar) i LOVE it. one of my favorites, and i've only owned it for
three days.

btw, thayil plays on the last track on the album, called `naked and
famous.' it's a cool little song, made cooler by thayil's distorted
solo track that stands out like a sore thumb when compared to the rest
of the song.

as far as shunning the prez's for not being part of the `scene'...i
voted for their album because it is extremely good and the band is from
seattle. there's my rationale.

and please don't ever mention the prez's and candlebox in the same
sentence. good god.

Yes, that would be I. Is it cool for anyone over the age of 17 to like
Silverchair. I think not. If you think it's OK...the line into the high
school cafeteia to view the collective works of the great 80's bands New
Kids on the Block and Menudo forms to the left. Do record companies and
shitty butt-rock bands (see above list) exploit artists into sounding like
whatever's HOT at a given moment? I think so. I've been "paying
attention" to the music industry for too long to know that what they are
forcing down our throats as "cool"...is just an attempt to rip the last
dollar from your flannel pockets.

>I bow to you, oh great one. Could you please be so kind to us uninformed,
>poor souls who wander in the darkness and supply us with a Defintive
>Seattle Copycat & Rip Off list, so we can at least fake that we're in
>the know?

Sure, here's a partial list - feel free to add to it:

Stone Temple Pilots - The Kingdom Come of the 90's. Possesor of the most
uncharismatic one named lead singers ever. Though he tried to increase his
street cred by becoming a stylish junkie. Smack kills. Unfortunately it
always gets the wrong people.

Silverchair - Soundkindergarden, Pearlvana etc. Not a shred of
originality in any of their music/lyrics/style. You can compare these
guys to firehouse, warrant, and trixter.

Dig - During the height of Nirvanamania...MTV reals out these untalented
lugs that sounded and looked exactly like Nirvana. There was a magazine
article where a member of Soundgarden (yes, SG!) was wondering when
these guys were gonna throw a baby into the water to chase after a dollar
bill in their buzz bin video. It was the biggest nirvana rip off until
the wheeled out the boys in Silverchair.

I would like to add that most of the time its not the fault of the
band members. They really are trying to create a good album without being in
the biz just for the money. Blame the record companies, agents, parents of
band members (read this months addicted to noise cover story on Silverchair),
managers and most of all blame yourself for buying into the big lie. Your
stupidity (and mine) guarantees it's gonna happen again and again and
again....

I picked this up on Addicted To Noise, online rock magazine. It's a

they're not cool anymore, save your fingers).

But, there's some SG reference, you might wanna read it:

p.s. For those of you that don't know Eddie Vedder had a pirate radio
station called Monkeywrench Radio. They bring it along with PJ on
tour and after the show the broadcast interviews, music, talk and
stuff like that. Check it out if they play in your town. It on 89.1
FM adn has a reach about 20 miles (they usually place it by the

Conformity's Deliverance) and Alice In Chains.

The album was recorded at Bad Animals Studio in Seattle and mixed at
Electric Lady in New York City. The new album features twelve new Alice
tracks, all of them composed by the band. Nine of the new songs have acerbic
penetrating lyrics written by Alice frontman Layne Staley while the other
three showcase the poetic prowess of guitarist Jerry Cantrell.

The songs on ALICE IN CHAINS are: "Heaven Beside You," "Again," "Nothin'
Song," "Over Now," "God Am," "Brush Away," "Head Creeps," "Shame In You,"
"So Close," "Frogs," "Sludge Factory," and "Grind." The band is: Layne
Staley (vocals); Jerry Cantrell (guitar); Mike Inez (bass); and Sean Kinney
(drums). Formed in Seattle in 1987, Alice In Chains released We Die Young,
the group's first EP, and Facelift, the band's debut album, in 1990; each
has gone on to gold and platinum status. Alice released the EP Sap in 1991
(now certified gold) and the album Dirt in 1992. In 1993, Alice In Chains
triumphed as headliners of that year's Lollapalooza tour while Dirt was
named Best Album of the Year in Spin magazine's Readers Poll.

Yep, I have several Dire Straits albums that seem to keep finding their way
back into my stereo every now and then.

Money For Nothing and Alchemy Live are the worst culprits.

Greetings people,

I just arrived back from a week long holiday and have just finished deleting
the 350 messages in my inbox! Maybe I should've asked for the digest...

I bought UltramegaOK on my holiday and was a bit disappointed with it
after hearing BadMotorFinger and Superunknown... maybe it will grow on me...

Everyone seems to be posting top ten lists here abouts, so I might
have a think about one (going to try something original). Maybe Top Ten
Issues of Playboy Magazine Published This Year? That would be an easy
one... :) (might need to borrow the magazines from someone though..)

See ya all later...

Alice In Chains

Columbia Records is ready to release ALICE IN CHAINS, the eponymous
new album from the critically and publicly acclaimed multi-platinum Seattle
rock band. The new album is Alice In Chain's first commercial release since
the group's Jar Of Flies EP debuted at #1 on the Billboard album chart the
week of February 12, 1994. Since its release, Jar of Flies has sold more
than two-and-a-half million copies in the United States while Dirt, the last
full-length Alice In Chains album (released September 1992), has been
certified triple platinum with stateside sales in excess of three million.

ALICE IN CHAINS was produced by Toby Wright (Jar Of Flies, Corrosion of

Subject: new Aussie

Howdy, I just susbscribed to this list and was just wanting to intro.
myself. My name is Ben and I am a student living in Brunswick,
Melbourne, Australia, etc.... I am absolutely stocked to find this list
after being on both the Pearl Jam list & the AIC one, and no offence, I
found them quite uninspiring (the lists, not the bands!!). I've been
into Soundgarden for quite a while. I was converted after first hearing
Gun, but my favorite is by far and away Jesus Christ Pose. This was
reinforced after hearing them doing a searing rendition of it when I was
lucky enough to catch them in the States at Rochester last year where
they played with You Am I(Aussies!). Anyway, enough of this mindless
chit-chat, I just want to say what a pleasure it is to be on this list
with fellow lovers of this great, timeless, and just basically shit-hot band.

p.s. if there are any fellow Melbournians out there wanting to see some
bands, drop me a line and we'll arrange something.

I agree littlejoe. instead of posting letters that are 12 pages
long and that contain lyrics that anyone with access to the www can read
at seth's soundgarden page, just go to the homepage to read them.

I mean, why repeat ourselves? (thanks seth :)
