Subject: A few questions...

Hello Soundgarden list.

I have been subscribed to the list for about two weeks, so I thought
it about time to break my silence; I have one or two questions....

A while ago an English Soundgarden fanzine - Hands All Over, sadly
no more (anyone remember it?) - was trying to find out the name of the
film which features the Hands All Over video. I remember switching
channels a few years back and seeing the HAO video, it was on a TV
in someones house and the someone was being stalked by a crazed
killer. Does anybody know the name of this film?

I have a Soundgarden single that I want to know more about. The single
looks like a bootleg record; it is blue vinyl and has live recordings
of Sub Pop Rock City and Fopp. The sound quality is really bad and it has
a photocopied cover, but the label on the disc looks like any normal
record - not the usual blank white label normally associated with
bootlegs - and it is on the Pub Sop label (a play on Sub Pop), and
what's more it is credited as 'produced by Soundgarden' - what's the
story?

I saw Soundgarden in Dublin a couple of days before they played the
Reading Festival - I had to take a train for 100 miles, then catch the
ferry over the Irish Sea, how far have you gone out of your way to
see Soundgarden (new story theme perhaps?). Anyway, I think they played
a similar set to Reading, did anyone else go to this show? I don't
remember seeing New Damage on the Reading set list posted here some time
ago, but they did it in Dublin which I was pleased about.

In March 1994 Soundgarden played a free show in London at the Shepards
Bush Empire - the Superunknown gig, so called because you had to ring
a number the day before to see where the show would take place.
It was a great show - my most enjoyable SG gig - and it was filmed,
I presume for MTV, but I have never seen the film shown - has it been,
and has anyone got a video of it?

One last thing. Soundgarden didn't really cover Black Sabbath's song
Into The Void, it was the same music but totally different lyrics.
The lyrics were taken from a letter sent by an Indian chief to an
American president. I guess most of you know this, but what I am getting
at is I have a copy of the letter, but it's rather long, so if you really,
really, really want to know it's full contents I will post it.

Thanks for bearing with me,

i have been surfing the net for a few weeks now, and was fortunate enough to
come across the soundgarden homepage, and now i am up to my eyeballs in
lyrics, pictures, and other various material regarding my favorite band.
now i have a question. upon looking at the discography, i couldn't find an
album i have-----it is a 7-inch called outtakes-----by lo-fi records, with
"thank you (falettinme be mice elf again)" and "everybody's got something to
hide..." the cover is an extremely old picture of chris.........is this a
bootleg? or a rare album? a response from an informed reader would be
greatly appreciated.--------------------------Joe

maybe this has already been brought up ( i am brand new here) but isn't
the day i tried to live rather obviously about suicide? one more time
around- would that possibly be a reference to the idea of karma, and
reincarnation? hell, the first verse screams it to me. from the view of
someone studying psychology, and who has some personal insight into
scizophrenia, the story i read is about a psychotic (someone who has a
break with reality, they often hear voices in their heads) who decides to
kill a bunch of people and then himself, or possibly just himself. either
that, or i need to look on the bright side of things. i guess the view
stems from the fact that superunknown is such a dark album.

Doooh!! I already unsubscribed for lack of time to read everything, but I
just can't pass up a good Top Ten list...

1. Alice In Chains - "Jar Of Flies"
2. Soundgarden - "Badmotorfinger"
3. Stone Temple Pilots - "Purple" (what the hell, you guys all hate STP??)
4. Soundgarden - "Superunknown"
5. Alice In Chains - "Sap"
6. Pearl Jam - "Ten"
7. Pearl Jam - "Vs."
8. Stone Temple Pilots - "Core"
9. Nirvana - "Nevermind"
10. Alice In Chains - "Dirt"

And coming in at the honorary (and perfectly appropriate) 11th spot,
11. Eleven - their latest album "Thunk" - any Eleven fans out there? I love
their stuff, lots of different influences. Matt Cameron plays on this album,
he helped out when Jack Irons took off to join PJ, and I think the coolest
song on this album is "Why", which Matt drums on. It just HAS to be about
Jack leaving them for PJ, and it rocks b/c it's all emotional and pissed-off
like. Check out Eleven's home page on the web at:
"http:/www.hollywoodrec.com/eleven".

I *honestly* didn't mean for this to turn into an ad for Eleven! Just bought
the album yesterday and am still in that constant-listening, "wow this is
really cool" mode, ya know?

Well, I went ahead and started the Soundgarden Mailing List Member
Directory. Everyone has to send me his/her picture. UUencoded or
MIME-encoded images are the easiest way to get them to me. If you have
a homepage, tell me and I'll link it to your picture. This way, people
on the list can get to know each other a little better without having
to post countless messages about the best drinks that they've had (no
offense to anyone involved in this thread, but does it really relate
to Soundgarden at all?).

If you don't have access to a scanner, I'll scan the picture for you.
My real mail address is on the Member Directory page.

For everyone, the address of this new page (which is not linked to the
Soundgarden homepage itself) is:

	http://www.sgi.net/soundgarden/list/

And as if you hadn't noticed, I'm not giving up on this idea. For some
reason I thought this would be cool, so it's going to happen even if I
have to draw pictures of all of you and put them up.

completely weird. You have to hear it to understand though.

D. Garrett's point (9/28) about SG live is well taken. I saw them in '90
opening for Danzig, and 'fraid to say, the headliner was better. The
problem for me lay in Thayil's sense of rhythm and general lack of
technical ability. Thayil's genius is sound -- I rank him with Hendrix and
Page in that department. Unfortunately, there is no substitute for
technical prowess in live performance. A comparison can be drawn to the
later live performances of Zeppelin as Page's declining brain cell count
rendered his solos embarrassingly sloppy, while the riffs still packed a
punch.
Come to think of it, Zeppelin-SG comparisons abound, as far as particular
talents go. Listen to the earth shattering bass drums of Bonham and
Cameron.
But Cameron will probably live a while and Cornell is a better songwriter
than Plant.
Well, they're not the reincarnation of Zeppelin, they don't even admit to
liking Zep, but they're close enough for me, for now. And who cares if they
bomb live -- like LZ they rarely play live anymore.

I wonder if this will get in....

First they arent a Seattle band. so your votes for these two albums dont
count. Second, I mentioned in the original post that copycat, rip off's
(Silverchair, STP, Brother Cain, Collective Soul etc) (bands without a
collective shred of originality) shouldn't be confused and included in the
best of Seattle rock albums of the 90's. You could of been more original
and mentioned _Dig_.

To me Soundgarden are the missing link between Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and
something totally mind-numbingly original. When I first heard Badmotorfinger
it took me many listens to really get into it and understand it, i'd already
got Louder than Love which I thought at the time was ok (I appreciate it far
more now!!) but Badmotorfinger is like an utterly seminal album, the lyrics,
riffs, song structures, squalls of feedback that are seemingly woven throughout
the album and all the weird time signatures make up a mystical, compelling 70
odd minutes of music. Cornell sounds like some kind of primal man possessed,
his voice finally come into its own (he sounds much younger and less mature on
LTL) and the guitars could'nt fail tuned down to A at times giving a whole new
dimension in sound and distancing themselves from all the other HM/Rock bands
around at the time (Skid Row, Warrant, Anthrax etc). I probably sound like
some gushing fan but this is my take on probably my favourite LP of all time.
It is a pity they can't recreate it live (Searching with my good eye closed
sounds completely different!), but if they can still cut it in the studio and
Superunknown is not a lesser album just different then i'm with them for the
duration.

I guess I can see where this is going, so I'm going to try and respond
to as much hate mail as possible, clear things up and then drink a
 large amount of coffee.

ClownWithBazooka? I appologise for calling you "dear", I'm sorry if I
construed your words, but you did actually say "the four best musicians
in one band", to which okay, i said "world", not far out, but fair
enough. You also believe you can measure talent, how? Or are you just
biased, it seems very much so. Music is to be listened to and enjoyed,
not graded or compared which are so fond of doing.

Blind Dog? My opinion is still equal to that of Chris Cornell, and yes,
that includes whatever form you want to output it. It doesn't mean I
am egotistical because I choose to voice it, if that is how you feel
about your own opinion then all i can say is that you are an extremely
shallow person. I find everyone's opinion interesting, whether I agree
or disagree, you should do the same. And I replied in a shitty manner
because I do not enjoy being patronised, and you also started the
argument by replying in such a manner. I've already apologised for my
 behaviour, now how about you?

Askairi Williams? I misread your mail, my apologies.

EJ Fry? Yes, I can see you have your education, if my grant comes
through quick enough I'll buy you a plaque to put on your wall, what
 colour would you like?

Jovica Popovic? My point was (again?) that the Neil Young/Pearl Jam
album is nothing short of a commercial attempt at selling more records
as explained in my previous mail. You replied and said that it wasn't
a comercial move because it didn't say PJ anywhere on the inlay, but
you know anyway, and so does everyone else, especially MTV and many
of the Pearl Jam fans that bought it. And no, Courtney Love is not my
 idol, your mother is.

Good drummer/Bad drummer? I just want to say something on this. People
have been saying whose good and whose not and many of you are going off
"how" they play, nobody has actually said "what" they play. A good
example of this is Larry Mullen Jnr. who I consider to be a good
drummer, and someone replied with "what challenging drum songs have U2
ever recorded", if anyone has ever heard "Bullet the Blue Sky" or as
already mentioned "Sunday Bloody Sunday" these are good songs, if not
for a very catchy, yet uncomplex drum beat, and in my opinion that is
 more important. Feedback?

Girl U Want? Is this really a cover? And has anybody heard the early
demo versions of Fell On Black Days and Birth Ritual, I actually prefer
 these to the album tracks.

Top 10 albums? Well, I don't have an order, but I'd say my ten most
 played are.

Pearl Jam - Vitalogy
Rage Against the Machine	- Rage Against the Machine
Swervedriver - Mezcal Head
Levellers - Levelling the Land
Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger
Mad Season - Mad Season
Alice In Chains - Dirt
Radiohead - The Bends
Reef - Replenish
Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes

If I could ask one question to Soundgarden, then I suppose I'd ask for
a drink because I helped buy the last round.

Just because you write morbid, dark, disturbing, etc. - doesn't mean your head
isn't screw on right. Look at the track record: Clive Barker (Hellraiser
series), Ann Rice (Interview with a Vampire), Hemmingway (figure I need a
normal type writer in here - if you can consider him normal), Donaldson (T.
Convent Trilogy), - sorry, I have a large library and it covers all topic, but
for some reason I could only come up with horror type authors - wait how about
OJ Simpson last book (shudder).

But back to the point (if I have one) you are not always what you write. You
look at the above list and say - Well Jamie those people aren't real straight
in the head. - No, but they know the way to the bank and laugh the whole way.
I'm sure Chris's writing reflects how he views the world, but I bet it's not
how his world work.

Besides if you read some of my work, you would think I was the gloomiest lady
around - and no comments from people out there who have see my work.

Jamie
PS: I used authors and not song writer to make a point about writing - I feel
Chris is a writer not just a song writer. There are allot of artist that
write words for songs only - make it sound good with the music, does it rhythm
junk.

PSS: Just so you don't think book illiterate - my last book purchased was
Collin Powell (My American Journal) - got to meet him and have him sign the
book.

PSSS: There seems to be allot of writers on this list - how about some of your
material - I would love to read anything done by the group.

Sorry about the length of this, have nothing to do but wait for a new system to
come on line.

every song has vocals in it. Everyone in the band sings at least once
except for Steve Shelley but don't worry there are plenty of length
instrumentals. I personally like it better when Kim sings. This album
is best compared to thier 1990 album, "GOO". If you like any of the

Well, if anyone has any of the tab books and would be willing to
transcribe some of them for me, I'd be more than happy to put them on
the Web page. I'm not a guitarist, and as much as I want to provide as
much Soundgarden information as I possibly can, I don't want to spend

My 10 most influential Seattle albums of the 1990's:

1. Bleach.Nirvana <- Nirvana started the seattle scene and this is the
album that started Nirvana. It wasn't the greatest but it was probably
the most influential.
2. Nevermind.Nirvana
3. Badmotorfinger.Soundgarden
4. Ten.Pearl Jam
5. Temple of the Dog
6. Superunknown.Soundgarden
7. Piece of Cake.Mudhoney
8. Vs.Pearl Jam
9. Dirt.Alice in Chains
10. In Utero.Nirvana <- not majorly influencial but i couldn't think of
anything else

Well after writing this I realize that there are a lot of other great
albums out there that have come out before the 90's and from other places
rather than seattle. What do you all out there consider the 5 most
influencial rock (alternative, classic, punk, whatever) albums of all
time. Mine are in no order of preference...

Jimi Hendrix- Are You Experienced
Pink Floyd- The Wall
Pearl Jam- Ten
Nirvana- Bleach or Nevermind.. kindda a tie i guess
Led Zepplin- well any of their albums really...

Coming from a situation a little like Chris's...I must say that when you do a
bad job, or when a teacher says "He just can't do it!" it makes you want it
MORE. When your math teacher says "He's not cut out for this. He's a C
student, if he's lucky." it just wants to make you go back there with that B+

I can see Chris being the kind of guy that when he was young, teachers said
"That Chris is a bad kid. He just doesn't care about school. He's not any
kind of student." so Chris would go home and read through that entire
dictionary so he could use words that his teachers wouldn't even

How far would I travel to see SG perform? I flew to London from my home

hours to Toronto to see Neil Young, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Blues
Traveler in August 1993 (my first live SG experience). In 1994, I flew to
London and took a bus to Wales to see them in an arena that held only 1,500
people. It would have been ideal if they had actually showed. They
canceled only three hours before due to Chris's vocal tribulations. I
did, however, receive a full refund from the ticket counter lady who after
examining my credit card felt compelled to blurt 'Oh, your the American!'
YES, I FELT LIKE THE STUPIDEST PERSON ALIVE. Luckily Chris was well
enough to perform in London the following day. In 1994, I also saw them in
New York, Boston, Milwaukee, Montreal, Hull and Toronto with Nine Inch
Nails. So basically I work to raise money to see Soundgarden live. I will
get a life. I will get a life. I will get a life. As for the Shepards
Bush performance, I have a hand-held video but haven't found any
professional version. Also, the name of the film featuring the Hands All
Over video is 'The Heights' (referring to the neighborhood in San
Francisco). Michael Keaton (playing a crazed tenant) tries to murder
Melanie Griffith (the homeowner) as the video plays on TV. Chris Cornell
and his wife went to see the film and were (pleasantly) shocked at how long
Soundgarden's part was. The scenes cut back and forth between the attack
and the video clip and last the duration of the song.

a similar set to Reading, did anyone else go to this show? I don't
remember seeing New Damage on the Reading set list posted here some time

In March 1994 Soundgarden played a free show in London at the Shepards
Bush Empire - the Superunknown gig, so called because you had to ring
a number the day before to see where the show would take place.
It was a great show - my most enjoyable SG gig - and it was filmed,
I presume for MTV, but I have never seen the film shown - has it been,
and has anyone got a video of it?

To Carolyn (who's not the miserable failure):

I do appreciate the input on the issue of people who don't post in on these
enlightening conversations of Soundgarden and related bands. I hope,
however, that I did not send the wrong message. I in no way intended to
break the peace of the posters vs. the nonposters. I can't agree with you
more.

Oh, yeah.... About the Foo-fighters: I've heard "I'll Stick Around", but
is the rest of the album worth going out and buying? All sorts of positive
and negative input is welcome.

                                        Thanks, guys

Subject: AIC Album Release Date

Two new Alice in Chains (a CD-ROM and an audio CD) will be released in the
U.S. this coming Tuesday, October 3rd. Also, Soundgarden are set to RESUME
work on their next studio album. They recorded the basics of approximately
half an albums worth of tunes before the Euro-festival tour began. They
are currently in the PRELIMINARY stages of recording. They've maintained
in recent interviews that they'd like to keep this one loose, quick and
stick to the demos/jams instead of taking two days to record one guitar
part (apparently their last producer, talented as he may be, was a bit
anal). I assume the ideal goal is to have the album completed for a spring
release, but they honesty may finish it much sooner since they are
currently producing the album themselves. Whether or not the record will
be released prior to spring, even if it is finished earlier is, I assume,
     an A&M marketing department decision.

heretic is on the" pump up the volume" soundtrack. by the way, did anyone
else realize that chris cornell was the mime in "singles"? he was
hilarious. the other cool thing i noticed in singles was the riff for
spoonman shows up in one scene, played on an acoustic guitar in the
background.

I tried to play Searching once...it's very tough to do. I love it, but it's
hard. Even for rhythm guitar!!!

HI All,
Yes, sorry, I did mean Larry Mullins Jr...Derr!!
Jackhammer - Outshined's verse is in 7/4 while I think the chorus is in 4/4.
I don't really remember.
Jackovic - Yes, I was trying to say exactly the same thing. The 'commercial'
tag is used negatively, constantly. The indie ethics are the source of the
problem.
Top ten fave albums...well this is hard!
 John Coltrane - Coltrane's sound
 Died Pretty - Doughboy Hollow
Nick Cave - The Good Son
 Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
 Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger
Spy Vs Spy - AO MOD TV VERS.
Hunters & Collectors - Ghost Nation
 Portishead - Dummy
 The Cure - Distenegration
The Church - Priest = Aura
I may regret this later but if I was stuck with these ten I could survive.
Best live bands:
The Young Gods, Nirvana, Hunters & Collectors, Smashing Pumpkins, You Am I,
Beasts of Bourbon, U2.
I have seen all these bands more than once. They all did ONE show that blew
me away. The type of gig where you walk out speachless with that euphoric
feeling that is only matched by sex. Unfortunately Soundgarden could have
been better both times I saw them.
Bands to watch:
You Am I, Big Heavy Stuff, Front End Loader, Pollyanna.
See ya,
RICH.

BADLY today.   {groan}

Last night I was at a surprise birthday party for my sister, and this little
black duck had waaaaaaaay too much to drink.

My head is going KABOOM! KABOOM!!

And bloody MoonDruid doesn't help when he writes (very imaginative though,
MD, I'm proud of you) things like this:

>Steve said this while sober...but I was wasted when I replyed!!!
>After a few Balzi Balls, J (just J) said...
>While drinking a rum and coke, Glenn the canuck said...
>While drinking Red Stripe (aahhh, Jamaican good beer!), Jackhammer said,

Holy Cow. Just READING about booze is not helping my woosy tummy or my
bleary eyeballs.................

And tomorrow is THE sporting event of the year for Australia - the big AFL
grand final (Aussie Rules footy, this is) - and my team (Carlton - go
blue-boys) is playing - and so I'll just HAVE to consume a few more ales
while watching the big game on tv - and then just HAVE to go out on the town
to celebrate the big win (I hope) afterwards - partying till dawn - letting
my hair down - kicking up my heels - boogying my buns off - and generally
just living it up BIG TIME...............how the hell am I going to cope
with all this excitement?

But hey, I'm a Soundgarden Fan!! I have ENERGY! I have STAMINA!! Of
course I'll cope..........................

But in the meantime your very own Music Freak is feeling decidedly
Miserably Forlorn right at this very moment.

I'll be sending some responses to a few of today's postings next week - this
message is about as much as I can handle just now. Till then, stay happy
everyone ~
