Me too - I have drummed in the past (but you wouldn't call me a drummer!),
but I do notice drum lines pretty well before I take notice of the lyrics to
any song.

Songs like Spoonman stuff me right up - it happens to be in 7/4 time (I
think!), and the only other song I've come across that uses 7/4 is Dave
Brubek's "Unsquare Dance" - it's guarenteed to stuff any musician's timing
up! Other songs use some top rhythms too - Fell On Black Days would appear
to be consecutive bars of 4/4 and 2/4 (the rhythm couldn't be described as
6/8 'cos the beats are grouped the wrong way - maybe 6/4?), My Wave is in
5/4 and those examples are from Superunknown alone! Sheesh, to follow those
rhythms...

Could someone (just out of interest) tell me the configuration of Matt's
drum kit?

Catchya Round!

Jackhammer.

And for heaven's sake, turn the flamethrowers down (or preferably off) -
we're all starting to get burnt, not just the intended recipient!

Ditto to that. Keep 'em rolling in, everyone! I'm starting to feel like
I'm getting to know you all just that little bit more..................

Oh, and someone wrote that they consider themselves "a true
soundgarden fan" because they knew the band before anyone else did
(or something to that effect). Well, I'm a fan too (a true one, I suppose? -
it's true that I do like soundgarden!), but who gives a shit when you first
got into a band?
Being a true fan or not is just bullshit. It's often just a matter of luck to
"discover" a band if they don't happen to have hit singles..............the
person who wrote said she was given 3 Soundgarden
CDs for her birthday - so if she'd never got that gift she probably
wouldn't be a fan now. Like if I never hurt my knee I probably wouldn't
be a fan now. It's all just fate, mate! :-)

Now I don't even know what point I was trying to make up there. This
was supposed to be a two-line message. Oh well {sigh} I'll leave that
paragraph in because I know someone out there will agree with my way
of thinking!

Bye ~
Carolyn the My Friend.....?

PS: Jamie: I'm THINKING of a question to ask the band..................but
have patience! You've put the pressure on us, when you actually
specified those of us you expected answers from - THE CHALLENGE IS
ON, GUYS, COME ON!!
{Well done, Back Door Man, for getting the ball rolling}

PPS: Also to Jamie: I think the Is Susan hot? question was done in fun -
not meant to be taken seriously. I'm sure Brian wasn't wanting to judge
books by covers. After all, we on this list can ONLY judge each other by
the book since we can't see any covers............which is probably not a
bad thing!

PPPS: So much for being a two-line message. My grandpa always tells
me I have Verbal Diarrhoea so I guess that's the same when I write. :-(
Sorrrrrry.

well, seems, everyone is telling their story...I think it won't be fair
if I don't tell mine..okey here it is....

it all started when I was watching these local bands in a local joint
called Club Dredd...before the first band started its set..there was this
usual background music...and the first thing that caught my attention was
the lyrics and that screeching voice yelling "Yeah, I know what to do, I'm
gonna (fuck..fuck) FUCK YOU!!" yeah, it was big dumb sex. It got to me
so, I went to the jock and asked who's that you're playing? he said, "here
take a look" since we had a mutual friend, (i go there regularly, after
classes) i kinda asked him (my friend) to borrow the tape...after the
show..so I recorded it while i listened to it..and hey! boy...I said "Hey,
this band is cool....I'm also a sucker for vocals that reach those high
notes... since I do vocals myself...that voice was fantastic!

I listened to it almost everyday, even bringing my tape player to school.
A year after..that same guy (the jock) said "hey mike, there's a new CD by
Soundgarden" and off we went, and great after buying..I listened to it
FULL BLAST...what really caught my attention was Rusty Cage, JCP and
Slaves&Bulldozers... man! I noticed the maturity in the music they
played... these guys are getting better and better....and since then I got
hooked to SG.. well, that about it! (I'm still waiting for the new album
(and the band) to come here in the Philippines..(btw, anyone here know
where I can git a copy of Ultramega OK? I only have Louder than Love, BMF
and Superunknown and some songs i recorded on tape when i watched the
Lollapalooza tour (on MTV that is...)

Subject: The Soundgarden Experience

Dear all,
I couldn't remember how I got into SG at first, but I was just
reminded that I was actually introduced to them by Jane, a person who
at the time was just a friend. She said she had a few tapes I might like to
get my head round, so I borrowed them. The were Badmotorfinger, Ten
by PJ and Temple Of The Dog.
As is so often the case when listening to music I played them once
while recording them, then left them for a few weeks. I do this so that
when I go back to them I actually have heard the music and know some
of it (it helps me get into albums). The album that hit me most was BMF of
course and I couldn't wait for their next outgoing. After Superunknown
came out I brought it immediately and didn't take it out of my tape player
for months. Then I discovered that they had previous releases so I went
about saving up to get them.
Now I own Screaming Life\FOPP, Louder Than Love, Ultramega OK,
Badmotorfinger and of course Superunknown. All on CD. I wouldnt part
with any of them.
Oh and by the way, Jane and myself have been going out with each
other now for two years and five months so that shows you all what the
power of positive music can do.

Subject: Supermainsteam

I forgot to tell every one about Supermainstream. It seems like no one
else has it so... Well, the cd is all the way back in my dorm room now
but i will tell yall what i remember about it. First of all, the
recording volume seriously sucks. Doesn't really sound like a bootleg,
just like lo-fi production. The first song is "Stolen Prayer". I've
already mentioned the song "Everybody's got something to hide except for
me and my monkey" which is Kim sorta stepping out of the darkness and
playing some riffs which could be considered more classic rock than the
dark he usually eminates. The last track is a hidden live track called
"Communication Breakdown". Before the song Chris (I'm pretty sure that's
his voice) says "In Chicago they said 'throw away all your led zeppelin
recprds cuz soundgarden's here', well throw away all your soundgarden
records, cuz kingdom come is here" Hope that is of significance to
someone.
I don't know about the question to ask the boys. I already know
so much...Maybe how? I'm learning gutiar, and i've been trying to get
the riff from "Fell on Black Days" right for about two months now...I've
learned a few Sabbath riffs within that time frame. How did they get to
be so good? Maybe that would be it. Oh, i know that Kim has a college
degree, but anybody know from where, what kind of degree, and what was
the degree in? Maybe i would ask Chris how he can develop these complex
lyrics when he basically dropped out of high school? I'm in college and
i can't match any of the early stuff! Well, later fellow loud lovers. -j

Chances are he chose her for the total package , and not by looks alone ( hell

concerned , caring and realistic type of guy . In any case , what are all of

For Superunknown, Matt used a 6-piece DW kit finished in black.
	He's got a 24" kick and 12", 13", 14" and 16" toms in conventional

Hey list!!

I'm writing to comment on a few little statements

first off I have to say that I take a little offense at people dissing
others for not being what they think are "true Sg fanatics"
I started liking Sg because of Black Hole Sun but now I like all of
their songs, specifically Mailman, Drown Me, and My Wave. It doesn't
matter how you came to liking Sg, just that you like them.

About this drummer craze: I think Matt ranks up with some of the best
drummers out there. Lars Ulrich is the best IMHO, along/w Vinnie Paul and
Matt from gnr(i forget his last name)

Gasp!!! A fellow Canadian???

I am at the University of Waterloo in south western Ontario.
Where are you, Glenn?

I know how uncouth it is to not mention SG in a message so I will
add the message I was going to send today. I have a question I would like
to ask SG. (I am sure someone else can answer it, but it sure would be
nice to ask them instead.)

I cannot listen to Ultramega OK without driving myself nuts during the
minute of silence at the end. Does any one know what they are saying? I
know there are some obsenities, but those are easy to pick up on.
I have ruined more of my hearing on these few words than I like to, so if
someone can help me my ears would thank you.

It would be great if someone could also tell me what that popping sound
is. It is before they start talking, If I remember correctly. There are
two of them, the first quieter than the other. I know I used to hear this
sound a lot when I was a kid, but I was to young to know what it was. My
dad used to be a guitar player and the band used to practice in our

"Limo Wreck" is in 15/8. A friend of Kim's said that Motzart wrote songs
in that rhythm. The intro to "Head Down" is also in 15. The body of the
song follows a pattern: three bars of 4/4 and then one of 5/4. Then in
the middle there are some bars of 6/8.

Subject: Supermotorfinger?

I was at a Blockbuster Music store a couple of weeks ago. I saw a SG
package called "Supermotorfinger." It looked like a two CD package (the
last two albums, of course). Does anyone know if it has any unreleased
tracks on it? I don't remember.

To follow up on my earlier post concerning Matt's setup:
For Badmotorfinger, Matt had a five-piece DW kit finished in Aztec gold.
He used a 22" kick and 12", 13" and 16" toms in conventional depths. He
had the same Keplinger snare. He played Zildjian K cymbals.

Does anyone know if those mail order places on the SG homepage (CDs Now,
etc.) are reputable? I've been itchin' to get me a copy of Motorvision
but I don't know if I should send my credit card number over the line.

And lastly.....I'll tell you how I got into SG. This will be short and
sweet. A couple years ago, the band I was in wanted to cover "Outshined"
and "Whole Lotta' Love." I was still listening to dance music at the time
(God have mercy on my soul) so I had never heard them before. I picked up
a copy of Badmotorfinger and Led Zeppelin 2. I must say that it only took
a few days for those two bands to become my favorites. Since then, I've
bought every SG album and EP they've officially released. I've got a couple
of bootlegs on audio and video tape. I've got every Zeppelin release plus
audio and video bootlegs to the stratosphere. Anyone interested in
trades?

Well I cant really help you with the Rainbow Butt Monkeys yet because I
know very little, except that they played here last week and I heard
some good things. As far as the Odds, yes well theyve been Canada's
darlings for a while now (we alternate between them and the Tragically
Hip for radio air play). They have at least two albums, maybe more. The
first (as far as I know) is my personal favourite and both are readily
available in Canada. The first album, includes a song that was quite
popular on the radio, called "I was fucking Wendy the night that Elvis
died". (Of course that wasnt the radio version. On radio--and Much
Music--the song became "I made love to Wendy...")

OK, here's my Soundgarden input. Aparently, so SG said in an interview on
MM, Canada was the first place that BMF went gold because MM played
Jesus Christ Pose in regular rotation when it came out, ignoring the
criticism about the "imagery".

Suk Yin kind of took the Canadian music watching public by storm when she
appeared for the first time earlier this year. I dont know if you saw it,
but she started her MM career in full Elvis costume--sideburns and
sequins and all. The next day she wore a green wig, glasses, and tacky
suit, so for the first two days no one actually knew what the new VJ even
looked like. She also makes independent films that they show periodically.
The only one I saw kept very much in character. Very weird indeed.

I think I know about Kim's education. In an article from "Spin" about a
year ago, Kim was said to have gone to the University of Washington and
he got a degree in Philosophy. I have to check on that to be positive,
but I'll let you know if I am wrong. Or maybe someone else can correct me.

BDM (& others listening),

It has the Austrialian records (actually Polydor a sub of A&M) thus the
Superunknown record has 'She Likes Suprises' as track 16. Also very slight
packaging variations, mainly the colors & each cd itself has a different
design. I got it as a collector's item & so I could have "SLS" on digi-disc.

Kim graduated from Evergreen State College (which is some liberal arts

it was a degree in philosophy.

He never graduated from high school. I have no idea if he ever got his

I've moved almost everything on the Web pages to the Stargate server,
which is much, much faster (and presumably less-trafficked) than MIT's
server. You can still find the page at its old address, but all of the
links (except the mailing list subscription form, which most of you
probably won't need again) go to its new home. Since there are more
graphics on the main page than anywhere else, though, it might be in
your best interest to access the site by its new address, which is:

	http://www.sgi.net/soundgarden

This was just a mirror of the page at MIT for quite some time, but you
will see that it now holds just about everything. If you encounter
links that don't work, please let me know.

And sorry, Jamie, but I didn't add a picture of myself. Maybe someday.

I could be off track (this is from memory and I haven't listened to either
song a while), but I would suggest that Limo Wreck is in something like
either 15/8 or consecutive bars of 12/8 and 3/8 or some such thing - it
would make for a simple (?!?!) 6/8 time signature but after 12 beats, there
are an extra three tagged on (another ploy to kill any symmetry in the time
signature!)

As for Head Down, it sounds like it's in 4/4 with the last couple of lines
in a section swapping almost to a backbeat? Matt Cameron working his magic
on drums again, but I would think it was 4/4 - I'm happy for someone to
correct me though :)

Okay. Here I go. Hope you don't mind the non-musical content of this
question - it's quite different from the questions that have rolled in so
far, being more of a personal one. I reckon it'd be interesting to ask ALL
the band members this individually, just to see their varying answers:

It is a dark, cold, wet & windy night, and you (i.e. Matt or Chris
or Kim or Ben) are in an old mansion way out of town. The power is down but
the fire is blazing, with flames throwing out enough light to see by. You
and five other people are lounging near this fire, some on the floor and
some on sofas, each with a glass of red wine in hand, feeling extremely
relaxed after just having downed a delicious meal. You're in no hurry to go
anywhere. The room is warm and cosy. All you can hear is the roaring of
the fire, the pelting of the rain and the howling of the
wind..........................
So the scene is set. You must now choose the characters. Which
five famous people would you like in this room with you and what sort of
things would you talk about?

Is that good enough? Hope I lived up to your expectations, Jamie!

BTW, I guess Carolyn the mf could stand for anything! Originally it was C

Well, I guess I heard Outshined on the radio. I said to myself, "Wow,
who's this?" Went to the store and picked up a copy of Badmotorfinger.
As we all know, it kicks much ass, and I ws hooked on SG ever
since....isnt that a lovely little story? Please, no weeping.

I'd like to urge anyone who hasn't visited the Rocktropolis Soundgarden Page to
do so as soon as possible. It really is an excellent piece of work, and there's
some neat stuff on there, too (ie. Knights of the Soundtable info, and a
supposed e-mail link to the band).

Best wishes,
Glenn

I'd ask my boy Matt how he got such total independence, and what would
be the best excercises to help get it down like he does.

Are you from Seattle? Did you go see them in local clubs? Are you
better than people started to like them later on? My first CD was BMF,
so I could say I liked them about the same time you started to!

Actually, 7/4 isnt TOO uncommon. Its found in a lot of music in fact.
Youre right, SG, like Dave Brubek, likes to experiment in freaky time
signatures. Matts kit isnt that big. I used to have a diagram of it
from Moder Drummer, but its been since lost. Sorry.

For Superunknown, Matt used two completely different kits by dw and his
bud who makes snares for him, Keplinger.

Subject: Greetings. :>

Dear Gardners?

Allow my first question to be what is the name of the this mailing list
besides the obvious "Soundgarden mailing list"? For example I'm on the
"Oceans" Pearl Jam mailing list named after the song. :>

Alas I be known as Stoo, who resides in Perth, Western Australia. :> I
came across this list through a posting on "Oceans". Indeed the only
SG I have is Superunknown and their songs on the Singles soundtrack,
needless to say I am an avid admirer of their material and intend on
experiencing their previous albums as soon as possible.

I was wondering if the SG song "Birth ritual" on the Singles soundtrack
was from a previous album or soley for the soundtrack? I have heard a
little of Bad Motorfinger but truly haven't heard enough of it to warrant
an opinion. Alas I was wondering if people could post to me their *brief*
descriptions of SG albums? I would appreciate it. A good friend of mine
mentioned an SG album or compilation titled the brilliant palindrome
"Satan oscillate my metallic sonatas". Could someone describe to me the
material on this CD if it exists?

Finally I was wondering just what is the current situation with SG? Are
they touring? Recording? R&R? Someone on IRC told me she saw SG in a
local Seattle newspaper posing in front of a statue of Lenin? She thought
it was probably for a new album. Could anyone fill me in? I also heard
that Soundgarden did some material on the "Basketball diaries
soundtrack"? Could someone also shed some light on this please?
Thanks for your time. Laters. :>
