Brad Wilk is solid. Hes better than a lot of other drummer out there.
Rage isnt hip hop by the way, in case youve never bothered to listen.

I don't think that would work. I don't see what would Kim and Ben do in
such situation. On the other hand, a solo acoustic effort by Chris would
kick major ass, IMHO.

Lynrd Skynrd did the original Smokestack. They're a southern rock outfit
who is not longer around, since some band members died in a plane

I'd like to add 'sweat covered beast' called Dave Abbruzzesse, ex-PJ. He
had that incredoible way of sneaking in quiet cymbal fills, ghost snares
and stuff like that. Try to listen to a remixed version of Even Flow
(the one on the single and the video), or any PJ bootleg with him on
drums.

Lars Ulrich (Metallica), Will (?) Clahoun (Living Colour), Nicko McBrain
(Iron Maiden), Stewart Copeland (The Police) and Ginger Baker (Cream)
deserve to be mentioned also.

Because music has a certain impact on me, my emotions and my mood. If
I just wanted a kick ass rock I would be listening to Aerosmith, AC/DC
and stuff like that. But, I mean, how many songs about getting laid and
speeding on a highway do we need? I want music I listen to to be both
musically and intelectually chalanging. Soundgarden, among others,
cover both points pretty well.

One drummer that i don't think many people have heard should be added to
the list. Anyone heard Chip Fisher from the band Skatenigs? They are a
pretty good metal band, not near sg's level, but still a pretty good
band. The title of their song "Passion For Destruction" should be enough to
interest people in their music. -j

On the issue of great drummers did anyone ever cosider a certain
drummer from a little known band in the UK called U2 ? Forgetting this guy is
similar to forgetting Brad Wilk . Sure the vocals captivate your attention but
you still can't ignore the excellent drumwork .

Oh yeah for all of the people that think that SG is a so-so band , take the
following . If everybody is so great , they appear mediocre . Remember the
Dream Team in the Olympics ? All of the stars and nobody scored 30,40,or 50
points . They were all equal . But if you have a star that carries the group
like Bono or the late Freddie Mercury or even ( dare I say it ) Eddie from PJ ,
the band looks like there is a leader and when he leaves or dies like Curt or
Freddie , the band falls apart . Soundgarden is an experience that everyone
should experience . The put their music above the elemental .

Whoa ! That was deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep .

So, deep that I had to read it three times to understand. Of course I have
such a mother of a head cold that I need a guide to get to work today. The
point is well taken - like John Bonham and Led Zep., Jim Morrison and the
Doors, Janis Joplin and who every she was with. Than of course you have case
like Linda Ronstad and (shit - can't remember that bands name either), but they
broke up and the band became the Eagles. OK, I'm now losing control of the
topic, so GOOD POINT Tim.

BTW: If I have spelled any of the names wrong, who gives a good flying *%&#).

Subject: How I got into Soundgarden

Well...Seth gave us the honor of hearing his story...so let's talk about how
WE all got into Soundgarden!!!

I was sitting on the couch (my little MTV generation self) and watching Beach
MTV during that fateful summer of '94. It wasn't that I got my first kiss, or
that a beautiful girl moved in next door that I remember the most (neither
are true)...I remember Black Hole Sun. "Black hole sun, won't you come..."
were running through my head for the next few weeks..then again, so was Far
Behind (sorry, Clown ;)...) so I went out and bought Superunknown and
<gurgle> Candlebox. I first listened to Superunknown, and thought it was
mediocre, if that. I listened to Candlebox and loved it...boy was I ever
stupid. An hour later, I threw in Superunknown again...but in my DISCMAN this
time, for the full effect. I played more than just Black Hole Sun (the ONLY
song that made me not think it was a waste of money) and found that I loved
it. I put it in my stereo...and it didn't move for much of the summer. (The
reason I didn't even HEAR the Badmotorfinger stuff is because I was still
listening to hip-hop and crap like that...UGH)
So, I was out in NYC and I went to a music place out there for 'No
Alternative' because I thought Verse Chorus Verse by Nirvana
rocked...well...I listened to Show Me a little and loved it...and that was
where my passion for Soundgarden TRULY (Ha-ha!!! I made a joke) began. I saw
Badmotorfinger and I wanted it SOOOOO much...but I wasted my money on No
Alternative and food that trip...so I was out.
So, I waited a little bit...but I got it for Christmas. That was when my
obsession with Soundgarden began. I got Louder Than Love at the beginning of
this summer at a used CD shop ($8.00!!!) and that was when my love for
Soundgarden began. Soon after, I got Screaming Life/Fopp...that's a cool
album. Then, a few weeks ago, I picked up the Digging the Garden
bootleg...but there was one thing missing.....Ultramega OK.
Don't fret...I just got it about a week ago!!!! AND I HAVE NEVER BEEN
DISAPOINTED BY A SINGLE ALBUM TO THIS DATE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry...it's a little long, but you get the point. Anyone else?

I don't THINK that they're on the page yet...so here are the lyrics to one
of, IMHO, Soundgarden's BEST songs...written by none other than Ben Shepard
(Lyrics AND music!!! Go Ben!!!)

SHOW ME

I woke up in a wooded house
I had my feet tied down to the floor
I looked outside the window
There's gonna be a July storm

Show me, show me, show me the door
Show me, show me, show me the door

That boy he once said
that a tires only flat on the bottom
That boy wound up dead
When his girlfriend's daddy shot him

Show me, show me, show me the door
Show me, show me, show me the door
Show me...all the door
Show me...all the door

Well, leaf that feel the tree
That's the straw that broke the camel's back
My daddy threw his cup in the river
It was, enough to break the dam

Show me...all the door
Show me...show me the door
Show me...all the door
Show me...show me the door

<Guitar solo, go Kim!!!>

Show me...all the door
Show me...show me the door
Show me...show me the door
Show me...show me the door

Subject: Sorry - Pop music.

Hi guys,
Sorry if my last rave didn't make much sense. I'll blame it on too much Uni
work and a part-time job, combined with mixing by own band's album. It's
fantastic to see the number of musicians on the list. A testament to SG's
musical ability.
Anyway, my point was that there will be the inevitable indie backlash to
Soundgarden's success. I hear the cries of 'sell out' already.
Fortunately for US bands, they seem to retain their credibilty after a hit
record. More so than here in OZ.
Any claims that SG have become more commercial are utter BULLSHIT! This
firstly implies that commercial music is bad. While many artists that have
chart success are utter crap, this doesn't mean that a band is crap 'cause
they sell records or that they changed their music in order to gain wider
appeal. Popular culture changes it's tastes in a constant evolution. If
great music just happens to become popular...ALL THE BETTER.
It your pissed off that SG are popular 'cause it's not cool to like them
anymore then you SUCK big time.
I think that will do for now.
SEE YA,
RICH.

P.S. RHCP are cool. Just stop the 'my fave band is better than yours' crap.
This is a bloody SG list. The dickhead did it for effect. Chicka - LABEL'S
SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Subject: how i got into soundgarden

Well, i've been touched by the stories of people telling about how they
got into Soundgarden, so its my turn. I used to hang out w/ these
skateboarders. They were a couple of years older than me. They would
listen to Suicidal Tendencies, Spyra Gyra, and Quiet Riot. They also
listened to almost everything on SST and Cruz (All, Descendants, Black
Flag, Gregg Ginn) Well, they bought the flower EP (because it was on
SST) and i loved it. I was still young, so i didn't know to buy more
Soundgarden. Years later, i bought Badmotorfinger, on the sole basis
that i remembered from somewhere that Soundgarden was cool, even though i
didn't know where. I was impressed and bought the only other Soundgarden
CD the store had at the time, Screaming Life/Fopp. I was happy. I then
began to collect sg stuff. Ultramega OK blew me away, esp. Beyond The
Wheel, Incessant Mace, and their version of Smokestack Lightning. Then i
got Louder than Love & then Superunknown came out. At the time i was
more interested other styles of music. I also bought candlebox and
Superunknown on the same day. i knew ther was something special about
superunknown the first time i heard it. i heard it before black hole
sun was released as a single, and i thought black hole sun sounded more
like a (please excuse the heresy of this remark) Pearl Jam song. Don't
get me wrong, "Ten" was a miracle, but i thought that song just didn't
quite fit the style of the rest of the music. After multiple listens to
"4th of July", "The day i tried to live", "let me drown", "mailman", and
"Fresh Tendrils" i began search for that ep i heard so long ago. I found
it and it is the reason my email address is what it is (Toybox is the
third track on the ep). Soon, i'm gonna compose alist of all the
Soundgarden songs i have and ask for any additions & where i can get the
ones i don't have. i already know that i don't have "Into the Void" , a
song sg recorded with a couple of guys from Black Sabbath. Well, my
collecting goes on... -j

Or maybe Ben just has big veins from all that hard work. Or maybe he
takes steroids. -j

Subject: How I got into soundgarden

Sg Fans,
Since everyone here is telling there how I got into Soundgarden stories I
am going to tell mine. I was partying at a friends house one day, and I
was flicking channels on the T.V., I stopped at MTV for a brief instant
and Black Hole Sun came on, I usually flame Mtv so all my friends
threatned to kick my ass if I changed the channel. 5 Minutes later I was a
SOUNDGARDEN FAN. Anyway I went home and actually listned to more than just
"Hunger Strike" on my Temple Of the Dog Cd. I loved Chris's Vocals I
decided I wanted to hear more of the Cornell guys voice control and
Supersonic Screaming. Anyway I then went to my friends house and borrowed
his badmotorfinger. I played that Cd to death, I then had to buy my own
when I went to college. I kept listning to BMF so long that I almost never
listned to superunk. Anyway I played Superunk all the way through one day
when I was just chilling out in my dorm room. I thought Limo Wreck the Day
I tried to live, Head Down, Fourth of July, Tdittl, etc etc where some of
the best pieces of music ever written. So I bought louder than love, then
this summer I discovered Seth's unofficial Soundgarden Home Page, and I
discovered the wonderful world of Bootlegs, and the Albums screaming
life/Fopp and Ultramega Ok. I picked up the Ultrmegaunknown Cd and The
Ultramega Ok cd. (Since the best _____________ Music cd store I have ever
seen is down the street from me.) Anyway thats my story.

Subject: Re: GREAT DRUMMERS
From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

Those of you who have been on this list since the beginning may
remember the "Who's your favorite band?" thread. You may also remember
that Steve ended it with an immense list of every band he could name
off the top of his head, just to show how ridiculous the discussion
was. Well, this "great drummers" discussion is much the same. We could
go on for eternity, with every member of the list posting the names or
his/her favorites. Would anyone care to change the flavor of this
thread a bit, perhaps to discuss some of the drummers out there and
how their styles are somewhat similar to Matt's (you _do_ remember
subscribing to a _Soundgarden_ list, don't you?), instead of saying
"these drummers are great" and leaving it at that? Or better yet, a
discussion of exactly what is Matt's style? And when I talk of a
discussion about style, I also don't mean "this drummer is great; he
plays fast" or even "Matt is great; 'Jesus Christ Pose' kicks ass."

Not being a drummer myself, and not possessing even the tiniest
fragment of knowledge about the instrument, I'd be interested in some
good analyses of Matt and how he works.
