The song on the Pump up the Volume soundtrack is called Heretic. when I
heard it, I thought it was the scariest, raddest most hardcore song in
the world. It took me years to be able to listen to SG again. By then,
I wasn't fourteen, and I felt the first stirrings of love for SG.

"Heretic, burned at the stake..... WITCH!"

Can you believe the shit they play in nightclubs these days?

I went to 4 clubs in Brisbane last night... maybe I was just there at the
wrong time, but all they were playing was fucking dance and techno!
What's the fucking deal? I mean a bit of it here and there is fine, but
when they play the same 2 bars of music for 10 minutes, you gotta start
worrying about the state of sanity of the general listening public....

What happened to the popular grunge/metal/punk stuff? I mean, you can't
dance to them that well, but they make a nice change. "Self esteem" is a
song that just goes off every time it's played, but it didn't even get
given a chance!

One of the clubs was so fucked, that they had episodes of Mr Bean playing on
the closed circut TV system, while they were playing those 2 bars of
music over, and over, and over...

I have severely lost my faith in the night scene around Brisbane, I think
I'll confine myself to either:
a) Crash and Burn... the best Heavy Metal bar in the city.. or
b) My room, where I can listen to what I damn-well like!

Is it this bad anywere else? Any other Brisbanites still on the list?
What do you think of the current situation, did I just go on a bad night,
or what?!

( and as shitty as many of you people think "Green Day" is, they didn't
  even play that!!! )

Dear Avatar,
I live in Dorset in England and as far as I know there is one
good club here that plays "real" music, it is called "the hothouse" and it is
one club out of the hundreds we have here. All of the others play crappy
dance music and they aren't worth the bricks they ar built from.
If any of you ever come to Dorset (unlikely I know) check it out, handily
enough it is right beside the train station in Bournemouth. there is also a
cool pub about half a mile down the road from it called "the Gander".
You are right though, the quality of clubs has gone right downhill lately.

Subject: MTV Music Awards
From: jsimpson@mail03.mitre.org (Jamesetta Simpson)

Well I will stick my neck out and be the first to comment on the MTV Music
Awards.

OH MY GOD, I have stepped into a time wrap and have been transported back to
the mid-80's. I hated the 80's music - well at lease 90% of it. That why this
new and wonderful sound that came out of Seattle was so good for so many of us.
It was new, and loud, and fast, and good, and pounding, and meaningful, and
streetwise and etc. etc. etc.

Last nights big winners were all pop style music (i.e., TLC, Hootie, MJ). The
bands that play were not bad, just not my taste. Red Hot Chilies played well
but never really got into it (Dave N. stated at the pre-show, that he was going
to leave as soon as he could, that he was not even going to any of the
parties). REM played well, Live played well. White Zombie (last act) tried to
do some harm, but it was too late. Now we won't talk about Dennis's jokes or
anybody jokes - suck big time.

Silverchair did a nice job at the pre-show, Bon Jovieeee (cute cute cute - sick
humor that's me) perform well. Everyone perform well - wait there was Hole,
she (the *itch of music) try her best to cause some problems, but this too was
cut short. We were told to watch the Weekly MTV News show for a piece on Love
meets Madonna (who cares).

All in all it was a nice normal music show, lots of big names and good music -
I guess I'm just not normal. I wanted SG, PJ, AIC, I want my file manger back.
And the MTV VJ - they have all good senile, they were during this oh how
excepting this all is - I'm too cute for words act. Last years show was so
good.

Did I mention Greenday - if you blinked you miss them. I guess it's time for
me to craw back into my dark hole, put some good old fashion blues/heavy rock
n' roll on the old turntable, and kill a few bottles of wine.

If you think I'm bitching and was all wrong about the show - pick one of the
below!

You can't argue with a sick mind.
The cloudy mind see nothing.
Be thankful for fools. Without them, the rest of us wouldn't look so good.
To see others, you must only watch; to see yourself, you must look.

After posting this I will be off the air until next Tuesday - so I'll read your
flames then.

Jamie
Reality will be less painful than usual today (at lease one can hope so).

First of all Carolyn, you have a great attitude. I'm glad you didn't
take the first message in the wrong way. Back to SOUNDGARDEN.
I haven't had time to listen to anything lately because of homework.
Last night though, i did give my Silverchair CD a spin. Very cool
band and music for guys who are 15-16 years old. Superunknown is
such a majestic song. I love the feel of the higher guitar chords
with the heart crunching bass and drums. And to bring it all together
........ of course.... Chris's fantastic lyric writing. This makes
the song what it is. Simple to understand. Why hasn't anyone written
anything like this before. The lyrics look us right back in the face
and say "Duhhhhhhh.....Hello....McFly". I love it. I better go before
I get to excited. Plus I'm already late for class.. OH Well. It's worth
the fun. By the way. The "Singles" soundtrack CD is excelent as you
have probably figured out from some of the other messages. I own it
and love it. The movie is great too. If you haven't seen it, make it

I read the messages of bartramb and Daniel Ladle and I think
to that, not is only in yours countries, it is in all the world, the new
bands need a space in which they can go to play and "scream" their music
and that space have it the fuckin techno and other. Here in Mexico you
can't go at a bar to listen metal, grunge,or rock in general maybe
there are some goods places but is the same case, in general you just
can listen dance and techno music. I don't know some much English but

Overall the show was OK, but I must say that White Zombie, who were
the reason I watched in the first place, totally sucked. The entire
band was unable to keep up with the taped part of the song (the
keyboards, samples, etc.). It was a poor performance from a great band.
And maybe I missed it, but wasn't Quentin Tarantino supposed to
appear. I don't remember seeing him.

July 21, 1995 interview with Chris Cornell in Seattle, Washington

Soundgarden have begun work on their new LP at Litho Studios
in Seattle. Litho is owned by Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard. At the moment
the band are producing the album themselves. "Michael Beinhorn was so into
sounds. He was so, almost, anal about it, that it took the piss out of us
a lot of the time. By the time you get the sounds that you want to record
the song, you're sick and tired of playing it." As yet, SG do not have a
title for the album, nor do they have any track titles apart from 'An
Unkind'. "We've got the basics for more than half an album. We've just
started, but we're working at an incredibly faster pace than our last
couple of records. I think this record, done this way, is gonna cost
significantly less than the last record so we can afford to take the chance
of it being complete shit!," laughs Chris. "If we end up a month from now
being finished with it and half of it's shit we can go 'Well, alright, I
guess we can try it the other way again'. We have the time and the
financial ability to make big sweeping mistakes more than we used to, but
it doesn't fell like it'll be a mistake."

Have you ever heard any of those? All top-notch stuff. I personally
think every one of those albums is really worth having and listening.
Now, can you honestly say that people capable of producing that amount
of (good!) music have no talent? Would someone who is rocking hard for
30 years, like Neil Young, make a whole album with them if they had no
talent? Now, even if you don't enjoy their music (a shame if you don't)
you must give them artistic credit and respect for what they've done.

Rod Stewart has been producing "Music" I guess you could call it that
since the sixties. He has a body of work that is far greater than the sum
of the music generated by Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Alice in chains. He
also has been "rocking" for thirty years. But would I call him talented?
No. Respect him artiscally? No. Does Neil Young give me a headache? Yes.
Do I have a Headache now? Yes. give it up my mind will never change on my
opinion of Pearl Jam, unless they do something that changes my mind
drastically. Even if that happens I will never change my mind on thier
    current material.

I'm not sure who asked now, but yes indeed Soundgarden does have a song on
the Pump Up the Volume sndtrk. It is a song called "Heretic" -- the guy
plays part of it on his radio show. Cornell's voice is unmistakable. Very
cool -- the angry screaming Cornell we all love so much. Also check out the
Rollins/Bad Brains version of the old MC5 song "Kick Out the Jams." It's
original motor city grunge (to use a taboo word) from the early 70's I think.

My name is Kevin and I just got online with you guys. I got my
first batch of letters today. Who cares right? I just wanted to
comment on the situation of the clubs today. I am in Charlotte NC and
the situation here is not much better. The bottom line is people are
sick and tired of seeing Soundgarden, Nirvana, and Alice in Chains rip
off bands. The last wave of rock bands to come out (I'll not mention
any names but I think you'll know who I am talking about) have been a
poor copy of real grunge music. Don't get me wrong grunge is alive and
well but that is thanks to the pioneers i.e. Soundgarden. All that I
have seen in the clubs are grunge copies and the general public can
see an imposter. This opens up the door for the dance clubs (which
seem to be prevelant here) to take over the club market. I play in a
band myself and have to admit Soundgarden is a heavy influence in my
playing but I have enough respect for them and anyone who listens to
music not to be a rip off but try to come up with a new style. Anyway
I'm out of here hope to hear from you soon.

Well, I saw an earlier post regarding the Soundgarden show that I went
to last week in Offenbach. The bands that played were Pennywise, Kyuss,
Reef, Sponge, Blind Melonand of course, Soundgarden. Blind Melon
Rocked!!!..They played all new stuff, and put total energy and emotion into
the show! Sponge was pretty good as well, and although I don't really care
for their disc, they impressed the hell out of me! The other three bands
IMHO were terrible, but as I have said before, I tried to respect the fact
that they were doing their own thing. The main reason that I went to this
show was to see Blind Melon and Soungarden, so I was waiting all night for
Soundgarden. When they finally played, they kicked ass, but I must say that
my enjoyment of the show was kind of cut by the actions of the Bass Player
(Ben Shepherd) who within the first few songs began to get pissy with
someone in the crowd. I'm not really sure what the whole deal was, but from
that point on Ben proceeded to play the entire show with a shitty attitude
which he expressed by continually flipping off the crowd, and spitting on
people! I have never seen a bigger shitwad in my life!!! I mean, hey let's
face it, If you are a musician then you know what I'm saying when I say that
sometimes you have a bad show, or someone pisses you off while on
stage,...but to take it out on everyone, and to make the rest of your band
look like dicks as well is just not acceptable!! I still love Soundgarden's
music, but I will never go to see them live again as long as Ben is their
Bass player!

A friend of mine has a Soundgarden bootleg ( big deal, I know, every fan has one :-) )but on this bootleg is a song called "Get on the snake". Chris introduces this song as follows : "Here is a song from a movie wich nobody saw". Does anyone know what movie, and is there a soundtrack? Erwin, Belgium. P.S. Saw them perform at Pukkelpop in Hasselt, Belgium. They were great, even played "Waiting for the sun" (Doors y'know)

The movie is "Lost Angels," which stars Adrock from the Beastie Boys.
Your friend either has a very limited "Louder Than Live" Promo CD, or the
SG Bootleg called "Fortissimo" which is exactly the same. I saw Lost
Angels a few months ago, and it was pretty cool.
