Well, on the sun theme (but not a cold sun!) would someone care to put a
meaning to Blackhole Sun - is this a meteorological thing (pretty shallow,
eh?) or is this deep and meaningful?

All thoughts welcome.

OK...everybody now. Big, big, huge, collective sigh of relief.

Chris did NOT do permanent damage to his chords. Last year, he
was unable to sustain both high and low notes w/o pained concentration
and aid from soundboard echoes. At Reading, it was apparent that he
must finally have a voice coach. His voice was powerful and
controlled with zero effort and his facial expressions and stance were
arrogant and teasing (he was laid-back and deservedly proud of
himself).

The set opened with Chris casually striding to the mike as he
checked the tuning on his guitar, to apologize for canceling last
years show. SG then went on to make it up with a seamless set. With
their decade + experience, they know how to put together 90 minutes
with no awkward lapses or inconsistencies. It just flowed. They
opened with "Searching With My Good Eye Closed" (always gets the crowd
surfing), continued with "Drown Me", "My Wave", "F*** You Up" (Never
heard this one before. A concert song? For the new album? A
potential B-side?), "Spoonman", "Kickstand", "SuperUnknown",
"Mailman", "Black Hole Sun", Fell On Black Days", "Rusty Cage", "Head
Down" (Chris remarked "This is always one of my favorites."), "Hands
All Over", and a Doors cover which the crowd sang the chorus to (SG
usually do one different song in each set as they tour, either a cover
or a rarely-played-live tune like "I Love You", which they did at
Milwaukee's Summerfest last year). I especially loved the "4th of
July" finale (not included in last years set) and Chris's exaggerated
thrashing feedback assault in dimmed stage lights to close the
evening. Flawless.

P.S.: I was nearly unconscious during "Hands All Over" (with NO
exaggeration -- complete with sound distortion and large blue
splotches beforqe my eyes) after a surfer injured my neck and nose. I
was up against the fence in front and ducked when I saw him coming.
This was a MISTAKE.
With my head bent to the ground, I was perfectly positioned to
get my head slammed down into the rail of the fence -- could have
knocked my front teeth out given a few inches. Any recommendations on
injury prevention?

P.S.S.: Did anyone tape last years Grammy broadcast? I would
love to buy it, as I had to work late and only heard about SG's
acceptance speeches.

Dear Vikki,
O.K. so your review was better than my one but hey a few
different perspectives can be a good thing. I don't know about you but
the thing I was most impressed by was Chris's new found voice. To me
it seemed more powerful than ever and a damn site more tunefull than a
lot of the bands who were there. Maybe you are right about the voice
coach.

                                    Gott'a go now

was quite weak but he managed to recover in time for the final show but
the strain was quite apparent.Soundgarden were supposed to return to the

The people in charge of the official Soundgarden Web site (which is at
http://rocktropolis.com/Soundgarden) have decided to give me images from the
band's current tour for my page. The only other place these images can be
found is in the Soundgarden area on MSN.

So far, I only have a few, but there should be more coming soon. You can check
them out at http://www.sgi.net/soundgarden/images/tour/

Keep your eyes peeled for exclusive pictures from the Lowlands Festival as
well, which should be available in the very near future.

For those of you who are used to looking at the unofficial Soundgarden
homepage at web.mit.edu, much of the information (including the images) has
been moved to www.sgi.net (the space was donated and the server is much
faster). In fact, I've mirrored the main page there, so it can be found at
either of the following addresses:

	http://web.mit.edu/saperl/www/somms/

Enjoy.

BADLY recorded, sped up, more hiss and crackles etc. Other list's claim that
this version is a rather early demo of flower.

is slightly better recorded than Loco Mosquito. From the Pyrrhic Victory
compilation. Matt is listed as punk.

nahh, I agree with you daniel. versus is by far their best album
to date. and I think they are going to have to work very hard to top
it. maybe they should re-enlist dave?

just about all my favourite pearl jam songs come from that
album. specifically, rearviewmirror, rats and dissident. every song is
cool, and you don't have to wade through the bullshit of hey
foxymophandlemama and aye davanita to find the good stuff.

I know there are a lot of ten fans out there (that's *you* little

on ten. but maybe I've heard alive and jeremy far too many times :)

Well did anyone see MTV's 120 min. on Sunday night?

For once MTV had a half decent show. The show covered the Reading thing. It
had a short clip of the bands, the latest video of the bands, and a short
interview with the bands. And you ask what bands did they do. OH!! White
Zombie, Smashing Pumpkins, Pennywise, Beck, Blind Melon, Silverchair, and YES,
YES, YES - Soundgarden.

They showed "Fell on Black Days", showed just a second or two of the live
performance (they did show Ben so I was happy) and interview Chris and Kim.
They were ask about a new album - and did Chris and Kim give a good answer -
NOOOOO!. Chris talked about having allot of material and how hard it is to
make a choice on what should go on the next release. But no date - since SG
has a good manager and record producer - I think they will come out near the
Christmas time slot. When Chris was asked why they were doing the European
tour - he flatly stated the money.

Kim also made a comment about seeing the queen's rear (my word - his was less
tactful). All in all the few minutes they were on was good.

Okay, Dan - firstly you'll probably get a few replies (esp from Clown)
telling you off for even THINKING about discussing Pearl Jam on the
Soundgarden mailing list. But I won't!

The first PJ album I ever bought was Vs. I had listened to Ten but it
wasn't mine so I couldn't thrash it over & over on my stereo. Anyway, as a
result I like Vs. the best. I reckon as a general rule, the album of a band
you hear first you like the most. I just LOVE the "fastness" of the songs
on Vs - like Rearview Mirror, Glorified G, Leash, Go, Animal - they are
great for pumping you up!............and Rats is just different, really
cool...........and nothing can quite beat listening to Eddie's fantastic
strong voice in Daughter and Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small
Town (although of course Chris in Black Hole Sun is also very powerful - no
I'm NOT comparing them, I REFUSE to)..................and Eddie sounds so
MOURNFUL in Indifference that it's hard not to feel moved when listening to
it. In fact there's no song on Vs I dislike.

That's just my humble opinion. I'm not even going to mention Ten & Vitalogy
- - though I think they both have their merits. Still, to me, Vs is the best.

{Just got Blind Dog's response - seems he & I have a similar taste in music!}

Cheers, Dog, and Dan ~

Yeah, that makes sense, blind dog! I'm someone who tends to view lyrics very
superficially - I never look at meanings of a song unless it basically
smacks me in the face and says "LOOK! I AM THE MEANING OF THIS SONG!"
