FOPP is just an old Ohio Players tune from the album honey. I think its
susposed to replace or sound like "fuck." To anyone that cares, the
actual title for "Fopp(dub)" is "Fopp(fucked up heavy dub mix)" as read on
the origional 12" which I recently acquired for $40 US. E-mail me if you
want the origional jacket notes.

For those of you interested in Soundgarden rarities and such, I
scanned the cover of the 7" "Earache My Eye (live)"/"Big Bottom
(live)" bootleg and put it on the images page at the Web site. It's a
really cool purple and white graphic that has the words "Garden of
love....garden of death....he plants the Soundgarden" on it. Because
I'm running out of disk space, though, its dimensions are only
230x326. [If someone feels like donating a workstation, I'd be more
than glad to expand the Web pages to include every image I can get my
hands on in high quality, as well as sound clips, video, and whatever
else you want. I currently have a quota of 10Mb, so space is tight.]

The page with links to all of my Soundgarden-related images is at

I don't know about that, but with me I find I listen to the earlier more
often. Loud Love and Badmotor is always in the 10 stack :) It just that the
albums are all different as you move through the years...

Is this the one in Rocking Horse records? I have seen that finger and would
say yea it is real. I mean look at the case it is in. SoundGarden seem to
release alot of promo items ie Louder then Live cover etc etc. Anyone have a

Ok on the topic of covers...anyone else heard the version of Fopp the Red
Hot Chilli Peppers have done? I have it on a live bootleg...it is definatly
the Chilli's doing the song but you can heard the riff etc :) sounds cool
being a RHCP fan aswell :)

Ok the Yardbirds did smokestack lightning but why the Sonic Youth song at
the end of the Soundgraden version? Anybody with even a guess?

Has anyone else heard the Soundgarden Self Pollution radio session? I'm
just wondering because between Kyle Petty and No Attention, among other
things, Chris says " these songs are all for Corey". Does anyone know who
Corey is?

Could it be Corey Glover (Living Colour)? They broke up just
before that was recorded, and they were thanked in the notes to the album
Louder than Love. Any ideas???

NO WAY. Not only do they make fine music, they are great on the eyes.

One of the reasons I like the "Fell on Black Days" video, great close shots of
the band members. OK, all you males on the mailing list, I know this topic is
not welcome here - we should only talk about the music, where to get it, why
they did it, and all that other sensible stuff (so don't flame me). But after
all SG is a big rock band, populated with big sexy rock stars, and all you

First, tune your guitar to:

                                 STRINGS

                 6th 5th 4th 3rd 2nd 1st

                  C F C G B E

That is, drop the 6th, 5th, and 4th string tunings to C, F, C respectivley.
You may need an electronic tuner for this. Tune the top three strings
standardly. Makes for a DARK & PLODDING bottom end.
Now the chords Ab5, Db5, G5 for the intro. Ab5, Db5, G5, and Eb5 for the
verse. Eb5, Gb5, and NO CHORD for the chorus. Quick, cheap lesson:

        CHORD FINGERING

Ab5 5th & 6th strings, third fret both. Play in unison.
Db5 5th string, third fret/6th string, first fret. Play
in unison.
G5 5th & 6th strings, second fret both. Play in unison.
Eb5 5th string, fifth fret/6th string third fret. Play
in unison.

*NO CHORD part begins on the word SKY and completes on the word THE as in:

'Cause I saw it in the wind, and I saw it in the SKY, and I thought
it was THE end....

These are just the basics, there are many fills and riffs throughout the
song. For a clearer picture, anybody interested might want to look into
ordering (this is NOT an advertisement, just FYI) the official SG
SUPERUNKNOWN vocals-Guitar w/tablature songbook. You can get it from:
                                Cherry Lane Music Company
                                PO Box 430
                                Port Chester, NY 10573
                                (914)937-8601

It's worth it due to the fact of the many alternative guitar tunings and
riffs on the album.
I hope this helps. LATER.....

My favorite band? Definitely Soundgarden!! I'm not on any other band's
mailing list.As far as the ultimate band is concerned, I agree with those
that think that Lars Ulrich doesn't deserve to be on it. What about Matt
Cameron or Dave Grohl? Each of them blow Lars away. I haven't had the
fortunate experience of seeing anyone of the members of Soundgarden outside
of a show but I think it would be interesting to hear everyone's stories
about their first (or last) Soundgarden shows. Kind of like the first time
you got laid stories. My first show was a Bill Graham Day on the Green
concert back in 1991. Soundgarden opened up the show and the other acts were
Faith No More, Queensryche, and headlining were Metallica. I think that
Soundgarden were actually as loud or louder than Faith No More or Queensryche
and they blew me away. I already had "Louder than Love" and 'Ultramega OK"
but I hadn't heard anything from "Badmotorfinger" yet. Chris came out
claiming that they were the band "with the biggest dicks" and that they had
never sexually harrassed anyone (the Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas hearings were
going on).I think they played "Big Dumb Sex" after that. The show went
downhill from there although FNM was pretty good and Mike Patton claimed that
they were the band with the littlest dicks.

I think it is a good idea to write about our first Soundgarden concert
experiences.

I first saw them in Berkeley at the Greek Theatre (which is a great place
for a concert-- small, tight, great acoustics, good views). I can
honestly say that it was one of the two happiest times in my life (the
other had to do with snowboarding, which is believe should clue you all
in on how sacred it was!). I wanted to be completely sober and aware and
hear every lick of music.

At one point, Chris yelled, Christians SUCK! Which MUST have been for me
(:-)) because my boyfriend had just taken a "good, christian girl" to
Prom. And, later, when some skank threw her undies up on stage, Chris
threw them back off with his shoe, "I don't want your stinking underwear,
girl!" I was amzed by how low Ben's bass was to the ground. Oh, and
when Chris did a solo of "Mind Riot", I thought I might just die.

It was a long set. They played almost every song off of "Superunknown"
and BadMotorfinger. I was hoping for some Louder than Love, but no...
It still was almost as perfect as life could get.

Oh, before the concert, we jumped the back fence and watched their
soundcheck. We had to army crawl over the knoll to see, and when we
looked, Cameron was standing right there, not twenty feet away. We were
going to say something, but we were afraid he'd throw us out. As it
happened, he went down and told someone (I'd like to think, anyway!) and
THEY threw us out. Still, it was the best concert of my life, I think.
Complete and utter joy.

Yeah, I guess they'd be my favorite band. I hope they never get
self-conscious, like poor Vedder.

They released one single on SUB POP with an unreleased track "gen-o-cide".
You probably can buy the single from a S>P collector. If you're willing to
shell out some serious bucks. There will be another album...but dont hold
your breath...both Matt and Ben are concentrating on the new SG album. They
did do some club shows in Seattle.. but they havent put out a full tour. (or
do I think they ever will)

great cuts:
Blue Flame Ford
Four Girls
Tragic Telepathic (soul slasher)

no long boring fave band lists ever again.

>	Just in case anybody was wondering, Smokestack Lightning from
>Ultramega OK is a cover of the original done by the Yardbirds. However,

Just to clear up some misconceptions...""Smokestack Lightning" is actually a
Howlin' Wolf cover song. It originally was recorded in Chicago, January
1956. It was also originally released as Chess single 1618." - Info from the
liner notes to Best of Chess Blues. And the original sounds mighty different
than SG's version.

>	Also, anybody who doesn't have Screaming Life/Fopp, Ultramega OK, or
>Louder than Love should GET IT! They are all excellent albums. IMHO, no
>Soundgarden fan should be without them.

If you can afford it...you should buy everything they ever released. Check
out the discography to see what You're missin'.

>	Does anybody know what Hiro Yamamoto is doing now? Is he in a band

Hiro is presently the bassist in the space-rock band Truly. Buy the new
album _Fast Stories...from Kid Coma"...It's great.

hello all. I'd just like to say that while the ultimate band
argument has been interesting, it seems to have taken quite a departure
from when it began. when littlejoe and I wrote to the group about it, it
was just going to be a means of gauging which musicians are most admired
by everyone else on the list, and wasn't supposed to be quite so debated.
which isn't uncool, I guess. we just wanted to run a little survey.

the reason matt cameron couldn't be the drummer over lars (at
least in the original incarnation of the survey) was because we asked
everyone to only nominate one member per band. otherwise it would have
been an ultimate band made up of mostly soundgarden members.

so I'm not down on the recent posts. I'm just writing this so
that those people who might have only recently joined the list or only
caught the ass end of the debate might have a clearer idea.

Hello Seth & all the others on the Soundgarden Mailing list. It's Carolyn
from Mount Gambier in sunny South Australia (well, sunny today, anyway.
It's still winter over here but we've had a week or so of spring-type
weather so now we're all hanging out for summer to roll on.........) and I'm
a recent (in the last year or so) Soundgarden fan.

I only have their Superunknown album, as well as an unauthorised CD of one
of their earlier concerts, but I really like them and will gradually add
their other albums to my music collection.

Now I'm here I don't really know what to write! I just thought I should
send something, because in my "welcome" message from Seth he said that

>
>Keep in mind that the last Soundgarden list that was started only
>lasted ONE article and then died. Please don't let that happen.

so here I am. I guess I could tell you I'm 27 and a bit of a music freak,
owning about 660 albums (going back to the old cassette tapes, records and
now CDs). I like a fairly wide range of music, but some of my favourite
bands include Violent Femmes (they are fantastic in concert), Pearl Jam,
Nirvana, Green Day, The Cramps, Talking Heads, Exploding White Mice, Red Hot
Chili Peppers..............oh I could go on & on.

And of course I like Soundgarden!

Has anyone out there heard of Silverchair, Tumbleweed, Cruel Sea, Midnight
Oil, Hoodoo Gurus?? All pretty good Australian bands. I was surprised to
find mention of Silverchair on the World Wide Web so I guess someone in the
US knows them......

Till next time ~

Cheers from Carolyn Hanel.

there was a previous post that said that according to headbangers ball in

conflicting messages so I think that I will try to get into A&M records and
find out the official story since most record companies are online now and
post there new releases a couple of months in advance. I will post my findings

Has anyone seen the movie "KIDS" yet? I found that very powerful &
disturbing.

My favorite movie: Black Robe (about the destructive & sometimes beautiful
mix of
European/Native American Indian culture in 17th century Canada.... it is so
beautiful to watch, go
out and rent it immediately if you haven't seen it yet. Not mainstream crap.
 A real intellectual
movie)

Yay! Excellent, thanks for responding to my quest for themes. Slaves and
imprisonment is a
good one, I hadn't thought of that. But dogs was going to be my next post -
two other people
noticed it. Did you know that Chris has a lot of dogs?

Here's a more obscure one: Heart Attacks
"And I'm sparking like a heart attack (Reach Down) I thought there was
another one somewhere
on Superunknown, but now I can't find it. Am I crazy?

more tears/rain:

"Tears of the feeble...
"Cry if you want to cry, if it helps you see..
"fallin' like rain, into her schemes

"While the rest of you harvest the gold
"You threw me out cause I went digging for gold
"safe outside my gilded cage (like suicide)
"four-walled world

- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In addition to tears/rain/water
"Damn the river Burn the wine" Let me drown
"Swallowing Rivers Belongs to The Sea" Limo Wreck
"Cool in the water way where the baptized Drown" Fourth of July
"Drown My Fear" Black Hole Sun
"You've got the juice to fill my cup" Kickstand
"Cry If you want to Cry" My Wave
"And It would Pay you more to walk on Water" Jesus Christ Pose
"I was crying from my Eye Teeth" Mind Riot
"Bathed in Perspiration Drowned my enemies" Drawing flies
        Just my input
                    ClownWithBazooka
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

about the only thing that Chris sings that isn't abstract & poetic is, "I've
got the words to come
together" I think that is so funny, cause he really does! (the Beatle's
cover) It really sticks out as
a personal line.

I really enjoyed that song "no attention" as I heard it on Self-Pollution
radio. I have it on tape. It
is one where Chris starts out singing in a sonorous voice, and then escalates
to a scream - I like
that. It is top notch musically.

A soundgarden song is blaring during the one Brad Pitt scene in "true
romance" I thought that
was a great coincidence, cause I was really into Brad Pitt at the time I
rented the movie.

Where is Tad's cameo in "Singles"?

Hi Everyone,

What's up with the complaints from people about stuff that not directly
realted to Soundgarden. I like reading about stuff from other people who
have similiar interests. The new album sounds exciting! Any more INFO is
most welcome. I read that Smashong Pumpkins are putting out a Double album.
More of those from good bands would not go astray. (let's discount GnR's
wank.) You guys in the States should catch You Am I while their over if you
missed the on the Soundgarden tour. We had SG for the Big Day Out (better
than Lollypoploser by all accounts) a few years ago here in Aus. AND they
played in pubsas well. I'm talking 1000 people max. I saw them at Selina's
(Pub) where they had a few Tech difficulties but played Brilliantly. They did
seem more at home on the big stage though.
Best be off, the sun is calling.
See ya

I'd have to say Soundgarden is my favourite band of all time. I know
people probably get hung up on saying that because they are a relatively
new band, so I guess a lot of people say band's like Led Zep because it
sounds like they are more legitimate music fans. My humble opinion is
that thay are worthy of the acclaim. They are all masters of their
respective instruments, and Chris' moody, dark & driven lyrics and vocals
compliment and highlight it all perfectly. I think the music they produce
has the lasting appeal to make them a band who, like Led Zep et al, are
cited as a great influence on the genre they work within and will be
worthy of this sort of respect in the future.

that's saperl@mit.edu. there's only one "e" in saperl. i know it was
just a typo, but if people send requests to the wrong address and they
bounce, they'll post to the list to achieve their goal.

again, saperl@mit.edu

saperl

remember that, people.

only i need to be made miserable by having to deal with your
unsubscribe mail. leave these other innocent list members alone.
