other bands I listen to:
Foo Fighters
Alice in Chains
Mad Season
Silver Chair

these are just the current faves. Get a grip, guys. Soundgarden is a
very POPULAR band. What's so bad about that? They've worked very
hard for their sucess and have reached a level of complex musicianship
that can hold the interest of a lot of different folks - not just
metalheads. If they didn't grow in their style beyond "loud love", I
would never have found them. I respect them that I can trace the
development of their style over the years - I just like it more and
more as it gets to Badmotorfinger and then Superunknown, the best by
far.

Three best SG songs - that's so hard!!!!
4th of July
Limo Wreck
Black Hole Sun

also - Superunknown, Mailman, The Day I Tried to Live, Like Suicide, Head
Down...
New Damage, Rusty Cage, Fluttergirl, Fresh Deadly Roses, ...

Worst ones -

I awake (sounds like something from This is Spinal Tap)
No Wrong, No Right (ditto)
most of UltramegaOK !

I didn't re-listen to everything, just did it off the top of my head, so it's
not writ in stone.

I agree that the all-star line up band just wouldn't jell. For desert island
discs, give me:
1. Superunknown, SG
2. Ten, PJ
3. Nevermind, Nirvana
4. Temple of the Dog

I know this post is a bit belated, but I pulled the wave files of
665 and 667 off UltramegaOK with my CDrom the other night and played them
backwards, as was suggested on the list last week. Chris *really is*
screaming something about Santa and Christmas. It is not very clear at
the start, but at the end the words are clearly discernable. Anyone who
can, should have a listen, it's really very funny. :)

ps.Anyone who has Vitalogy should do the same with Pry To. Eddie is
singing something about Pete Townshend.

Subject: To pop or not to pop

I guess I should put my two cents into the current debate regarding the POP
status pinned on Soundgarden. I agree with the comments about the
evolution of the Soundgarden style and how they have worked hard and
certainly deserve any success that may come their way. Maybe some people
find the 'pop' label repugnant because it destroys their image of
Soundgarden as a cool, alternative band. I think that everyone becomes
too pre-occupied with labelling. I guess that the whole thing stems from
the 'cool' grunge image these days, it seems nobody wants to be associated
with anything mainstream whatsoever. To be cool you have to be like Eddie
Vedder or Kurt Cobain and be continuosly challenging authority. Everyone
wants to be in some select rebellious crowd. As a case in point take a
look at the alt.music.alternative newsgroups that say they cater only to bands
selling less than two platinum records.
Pop is what you make of it. Just because it is a word oft
associated with the talentless churn that comprises much of the market
these days, it doesn't mean that the quality product we are getting will
be compromised at all. As long as Chris and the boys don't make the
mistakes of Pearl Jam,
and tamper with their sound in some futile hit out at popularity, what we
get will continue to be the superb sounds they have given us in the past.
Every record they have ever released has been good. I don't care
what label you put on them, or how many people listen to them, what we
should care about is the band, not who the fans are. If Soundgarden
continue as they have started so well we should all be happy...right.

i heard that this was supposed to come out this fall, but now it's supposed
to come out next summer!?! i know it's hard for a band to to come up with
songs(believe me i've been there) and they're busy touring europe (which i
thought they did already) but i think they're waiting alittle to long.

OK, bands I like (other than Soundgarden):

Life long loves: Led Zepplen
                 Deep Purple
                 Thin Lizzy
                 Taste (Rory Gallaher)
                 Zephyr (Tommy Bolin)
                 Three Man Army Band
                 Nazareth
                 Bad Company (early)

Present day: Mother Love Bone (gone but not forgotten)
	                Hater
                 Bush
	                Alice in Chains
Mad Season (hope they do another CD)
	                Live
Stone Temple Pilots (mainly for the DeLeo brothers - we all
need a little sugar now and then)

Sorry this note is posted so late, but we have had a black out for two days.

JUNKGUNF,
Subtract about 80 from that list, add about 3 or 4 and you'll have the
complete list of my music tastes as well. However, I thought the list was
supposed to be short and concise, your all time favorite bands, not
    all your favorites.
        Just my worthless opinion.

I would like to pursue the topic of themes in the lyrics of Chris Cornell.
 Everyone could please
contribute to this:

Theme #1: Catholic Stuff

Jesus Christ Pose
Holy Water
"I'm going to the Holy Land" (Drown me in you)
Your Savior (temple of the dog)
etc, etc

and my personal favorite, Tears, rain & water:
"the wreck is going down, get out before you drown"
"Drown me in you"
"holy water's rusting me"
"And we fall like a tear falling to the ground"
"in the pouring down wind"
"Soundgarden is a tear in an eye dreaming"
"won't you come and wash away the rain"

can you add to my lists?
think of any more themes??

I just read my email, there are more messages asking to be unsubscribed
than actually talking about Soundgarden. If you want to unsubscribe you
should mail Seth directly [saperl@mit.edu] rather than clogging up our
boxes with that stuff (he is the list manager). If you subscribe to a
mailing list you should
expect to get a lot of messages, this list only gets a moderate load
compared to some i've been on. Anyway to all you real Soundgarden fans
out there let's keep on posting so this thing doesn't die like the last one.

ps. Seth, I hope that it was the right thing to do, telling them to post
to you..If not, sorry.

Just a few things I feel I should clear up for those who seem not to
know:

1. Unsubscribe requests should NOT be sent to the list. I seriously
doubt that anyone besides me really cares that you want to get off the
list. SEND ALL SUBSCRIBE/UNSUBSCRIBE REQUESTS TO SAPERL@MIT.EDU AND I
WILL DEAL WITH THEM.

2. Many people have chosen to unsubscribe due to the large quantity of
email that fills their inboxes each day. Well, the list is available
in DIGEST FORM, which means that you will get only ONE piece of email
each day, containing all of the day's messages. Other advantages of
the digest form of the list:

-I don't include unsubscribe requests that are sent to the list

-starting tonight, I plan to strip the headers from all messages
before sending the digest, making it easier to read

-if you really don't want to read it, it's only one piece of mail
	  to delete

And it figures, just as I'm writing this, Little Joe sends email to
the list saying basically the same exact thing, and he's 100% correct
in everything he says.

My list isn't quite so long, and doesn't encompass nearly as broad a
range of musical tastes, but here goes:

Beastie Boys, Breeders, The Clash, Concrete Blonde, Curve, Faith No
More, Luscious Jackson, Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, Sinead O'Connor,
Primal Scream, Scrawl (the only non-"pop" band on the list, it seems),
Smashing Pumpkins, Soul Coughing, Soundgarden, and Suede.

Of the above artists, I have seen the Beasties, Breeders, Luscious,
Pumpkins, and Suede live. I have also seen Soundgarden one time, in
New York, when they opened for Guns N' Roses in 1991. I thought they
sucked, but I realized that one live performance is not necessarily an
adequate representation of a band's ability, so I bought
_Badmotorfinger/SOMMS_ in the summer of 1992 and have been hooked ever
since. I added to my collection today with the purchase of two 7"
bootlegs: "Incescent Mace"/"Loco Mosquito" on red vinyl, and "Earache
My Eye (live)"/"Big Bottom (live)."

I also listen to "classical" music, probably more than I listen to
"popular" music. My favorite composer is Shostakovich, and I also
thoroughly enjoy Barber, Bach, some Beethoven, Orff, Prokofiev,
Tchaikovsky, and Wagner. As for performers, Yo-Yo Ma, Gil Shaham, and
the Kronos Quartet do it for me.

On top of that, film music is of particular interest to me; current
favorites include anything by John Williams and the scores for "The
Shawshank Redemption" and "Needful Things."
