The course on effective engineering management begins with notes on effective management. A series of 61 statements have been assembled through many presentations of the course which describe what characteristics effective managers have in common. Next, the engineering manager’s job is discussed, planning, organizing, leading, controlling, selecting, developing, utilizing and evaluating are skills which all managers require. Examples of where these skills are used are presented. Since the most important function of all is planning, three sections are devoted to how to plan. The first is entitled How to Plan, the second, Planning; The Foundation of Achievement and Finally the Benefits of Writing and Using Action Plans. This is followed by a section on problem solving and decision making.
One of the most difficult tasks as a manager is the motivation of others. A section is provided to summarize the thinking of generally recognized experts on the topic of motivation. You can use these summaries as a stepping stone to actually applying these concepts to job situations. The work of Gellerman, Argris, McClelland, Likert, Maslow, McGregor and Herzberg are summarized. An inventory for organizational motivation needs is also presented. Techniques for motivation are then discussed before leadership principles and qualities are presented. Finally, sections on how to choose a leadership style are developed allowing the participant to study and choose a style which best fits his or her needs.
